I've been paying 0.0559/kwh for enmax.

There's a 1 yr fixed 0.0549/kwh promotion with bonus aeroplan miles going on from direct energy.

I noticed that the electricity portion of my enmax monthly bill consists of:

admin charge
delivery charge
distribution charge
transmission charge
balacing pool allocation
rate riders
local access fee paid to Calgary

Would the extra charges be similar if I switch from enmax to direct energy?

My monthly electricity bill is mostly fees, its pretty crazy.

1467 kWh use @ $0.0204630/kWh = $30.02

Then fees:
$7.00 Admin fee
$14.67 ($0.01/kWh) Transaction Fee
$25.88 Distribution Fee
$28.55 Transmission Fee
-$4.89 Balancing Pool Allocation
$23.54 Rate Riders
$16.18 Local Access Fee

$140.95 Total
$111 of fees on $30 of usage. :nut:

Energy Charge: 1100 kWh x 0.0206290 = $22.69
Administration Charge: $6.77
Transaction Fee: $11.00
Distribution Charge: $22.19
Transmission Charge: $21.41
Balancing Pool Allocation: -$3.67
Rate Riders: $17.65
Local Access Fee paid to Calgary: $12.44

Summary: $110.48

I've tried comparing energy companies so many times and I come to the same conclusion every time. They have made it so confusing to compare just give up.

Go ahead, send your money to the Americans/British instead of City of Calgary if you don't think it's fair and see what you get.

The fee is part of the legacy set up by deregulation by Klein. AUC monitor the fees, retailers can charge less but not more. But we all know what that means.

Unfortunately Cos doesn't come on here no more. He's the best resource on this topic.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record; Google "Direct Energy scam" And for the young ones Google "sounding like a broken record"

Oh I understand what the fees are for and don't completely disagree with them, I just think the powers that be need to tweak the way they are calculated and distributed between ratepayers.

Just comparing a couple of my bills, one from old house and one from new house (different months, I just chose one with lower usage to highlight the difference).

1918 kWh usage = $136.74 in fees = 7.13 cents/kWh
520 kWh usage = $50.49 in fees = 9.71 cents/kWh

jacky4566 in High River is paying 14.9 cents/kWh for fees on 255 kWh usage.

The small consumers are getting hosed. Not sure what the fees are for someone in a condo but I'm guessing they pay more than their fair share for the infrastructure.

For the Condo last month:

Energy Charge: 283 kWh x 0.0497 = $14.07
Administration Charge: $7.47
Transaction Fee: $0.00
Distribution Charge: $16.20
Transmission Charge: $5.51
Balancing Pool Allocation: -$0.94
Rate Riders: $4.54
Local Access Fee paid to Calgary: $4.35

Summary: $51.20

13.12 cents/kWh for fees

Shared infrastructure, discount in volume, it will always be cheaper when population is more dense.

If you are our in rural like High River, I don't doubt fee will be higher. Heck I have to dispatch someone and drive 100km out there to fix a line, that ain't cheap.

I started doing this from this thread

Or you can just get a Canadian Tire credit card and you can use that to pay your bills, such as Enmax. I do Enmax and City of Calgary property taxes off that card. I got it specifically for those few places that don't take credit, and it earns like 1% in Canadian Tire money, which I use to buy shit at Canadian Tire. I don't use that card for anything but buying stuff at CT and paying the odd bill that can't be charged to CC directly.

If that's the case condo owners should be paying lower $/kWh in fees, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

Nothing you can do. Just pick a company and open your wallet. I long for the day energy storage is cheap enough for everyone to install it and ruin these companies.
