my only counter argument is that the bush admin. has spent over 100 billion dollars (based on recent estimates) on this war so far. it does not make any sense to spend that much money so that a few companies can make fractions of that

from the site you listed

Halliburton (who is getting the largest windfall in this fiasco) has won over $8 billion in contracts in Iraq in 2003.

so how does this figure? 100/8 is 12.5. so the US govt. is spending 12.5 billion dollars for every 1 billion Halliburton brings in. 33 billion to 2 billion, 45.5 billion to 3 billion, etc. Its doesn't make fiscal sence to go to war to give these companies contracts.

Having said that, they are still profiteering and its not cool, but dont try and say that the reason the war happened was so that a few companies could make money.

Wow thats alot of money. Some of that could have went to better things though. Their are people in some part of the states that live like they were in a third world country without running water and proper plumbing.

But you have to look at the good side of the war , Saddam is gone , and people dont have to suffer from his reign of terror. Like seriously the stuff that happened there before is terrible.

Good things come in time , and i think Iraq will be a good example of this.

The US NEEDS war... military economy and wartime boom drives the US. Every few years the US needs one to keep things running. To keep afloat somany companies (Boeing, Lockheed martin. millions of contractors) and of course there is the oil

i agree...

with things like the end of the Cold War and the fall of communism in the eastern europe, the USA really doesn't have much of a mandate in the world and it needs something to:

1. help fuel the economy

2. take notice away from all the big corporate scandals... funny the war happened shortly after giants like Enron, Worldcom etc. all were convicted of scandals and now we barely hear anything about it.

it was a way for Bush to stay in power for a little while longer.
we'll see if he will get re-elected for another term

BWAHAHAHA, and now he said they're going to mars for fuck's sake.

Gonna have to invade a lot more companies with oil to fund that ;)

Your counter-argument has failed to recognize the thousands of individual contracts that have been signed. Haliburton is NOT the only US company in Iraq. There are other U.S. companies, and other contracts that have been handed out to the allies that will generate future trade and income revenues for the United States. On top of that, remember that there is a trickle down effect - Haliburton employs thousands of employees, which are paid in U.S. dollars and taxed, while equipment and resources are all contracted to other companies in the United States to build and supply Haliburton - and i'm using Haliburton as a single example. Factor in the other companies that are working to rebuild Iraq, and you have a small economy.

It makes PERFECT fiscal sense.

It makes perfect sense for the companies. If it were legal, Bush would simply hand over taxpayers money to these corporations. Since this is virtually impossible, Bush just spends taxpayers money funding a war to generate an entire untapped marketplace for corporations. The corporations dont have to spend a dime and the government gains a foothold in the middle east. A win-win situation for everyone but the taxpayers.

Also, it really isnt that much money considering the long term benifets of owning Iraq. Iraq has ALOT of oil and now that the US controls that oil it posseses an enormous amount of power in the world economy.
