Ok, so a couple days ago I lost a HDD, 60GB Maxtor 7200RPM, overheating issue, sucker was scorching hot.

I havent been HDD intensive at all, but the ones I'm running now are really hot too. I have no sides on my computer at all, and my room is 18 degrees, 2 case fans, so airflow is not a problem, and there is no dust clogging anything. Anyone have any ideas on how to kep these suckers cool? seems like more than just a regular cooling issue, never had this prblem before? Something must be messed. Any ideas?

could be your power supply is screwed and is pushin too much power to them

I actually find that my PC runs cooler with the sides on the computer.

I think that this is because you actually get flow throughout the case instead of just around the fan.

Having no sides on the computer can create an airflow problem. Put them back on. Otherwise, buy a HDD cooler.

the larger ones run wayyy hotter to i find - my 120gig required me to get another fan put in!

Make sure there's at least an inch between the hard drives (so they are not stacked in the case). Consider moving one of the drives to a 5 1/4" slot (rails and a cooler kit) if it is still really bad...

If your case allows it, put a fan infront of the drives blowing in air over the drives.

btw, did the replacement videocard fan I sold you work out ?

hm thats weird. ive got 2x120gb with 1 slot separating them. ive got a case fan right in front of them, but thats it. they feel scorching hot sometimes but they dont fail...

My raptors run a little warm too. HDD usualy run warm but i doubt it will fail. I just added a fan and blamo. I would run warm if i were spinning at 10k rpm!

hmm maybe i should get a fan for mine 2, it feels pretty warm....

I would go with a HDD cooling case Ben!
A fancy one with a LCD temperature read out, and a variable fan speed which can be automatic or user oscillated! Now that would be PIMP!

And put those sides back on the case, they are there for a reason.
Keep in mind that the rear fan is designed to pull the hot air OUT of the case. If the sides arent on the case there is no "vacuum" persay and overheats are common!

I have 5 Western Digital HDs 2X200gig And 3X120gig never had a prob with cooling. But maybe you need a better fan or power suply.

If you feel like upgrading your case you could go for an Antec SOHO case. They have a fan mount right in front of the HDD slots and suck cold air directly over your drives. My Barracuda stays cool to the touch at all times. In my experience, taking off the side panels drops CPU temp but raises everything else...I'd put them back on.

I've got two 160GBs, 2 slots apart I think. Top one is at 26C, bottom is at 34C with sides on, and clunked up next to my desk and surrounded by crap my dad put there.

I had a similar problem with a CD burner though, my dad fried mine. We pulled it out and it was scorching after just about 10 seconds of being on. Check the power supply and make sure your connections are good.

The only drives that should be normally running hotter than you can bare are SCSI. Otherwise, you may soon have a bunk drive.

Ya...leaving the sides OFF could actually get you a higher temp. if you have good air flow going through your comp to begin with.

A simple solution would be to strap a slim heatsink on them, with a good tight elastic band and some silicon paste on it to your drives.
