OK, so, I have shot your classic recurves WAY WAY WAY back when, when I was in scouts and stuff, and haven't touched one since. I have found myself over the past couple years becoming really interested in it. Not for hunting or anything, but just to shoot. It kinda looks like zen to me. No batteries, no gas, just a whole bunch of potential energy being turned into kinetic energy.

Specifically, i am really drawn to compound bows. Those seem to fascinate me, and pull me right in.

So, IF i were to pursue this to any length, where do I start? What do I look for? Where can I go? everything!

I recommend you start off with a lesson at Jim-Bows archery or Calgary Archery Center.

I've heard good things about both these places. You could also sign up at the Alberta Outdoorsmen forum. They have a bunch of guys that know archery backwards and forwards. The problem is, any thread usually winds up with a bunch of "pros" arguing about the best methods, brands, accesories, etc, and the thread gets locked, someone gets their PP spanked and told to sit in the corner for 30 days.

Well Spikey, Archery is the practice of using a bow to propel arrows and was traditionally used for hunting and, for battle or sport. But enough about this silliness for tonight. Go do your reading and have your tub there's school tomorrow.

Go on now, don't make me call your mother, you know how she gets after she's been in the whiskey!

That talking to you like you're 7 enough for you? :dunno:

That's because you phrased the question wrong.
It's: "ELI5: Archery"

Hey lil buddy. Bows and arrows are dangerous. We'll get you a lil suction cup set to play with, but until you grow up a bit, you can't have the big boy ones.

The folks at the Calgary Archery Centre are very helpful with the noobs, you can rent recurve or compound and it's dirt cheap. A day pass is $20 including rental. Have your own gear? Still $12. For the extra $8 you can practice on someone else's stuff for a long time.

Hi Chris,

Listen, honey, I know you want to play with bows and arrows but you're just not old enough to use a compound bow. Let's talk about this when you're 15, okay? :)

Jim Bows is a great place to get started, especially if you're into compound bows.

We've covered this, he's too young for compound bows. Stop encouraging him before he gets another time-out.

Of course he's young, that's why he's getting a bow with training wheels! ;)

A guy I know is opening an "archery tag" style place, like paintball but with bows. Maybe Chris can get his feet wet there?

I think you have to be at least 12 to go, though. Will inquire.
