My 11 year old son has expressed interest in playing basketball. Thing is he's never played before and I don't know much about it in terms of how club/league structures work in Calgary (or basketball for that matter). Any suggestions on a good starting place? I've googled it obviously, and hits I'm getting are just league websites that don't say much in terms of newb player development programs etc. - mostly info on deadlines and game schedules etc. Hoping there's someone on here with first hand experience :)

I'm pretty sure the junior high school team would be the best way to go.

We enrolled my 4 yr old at Star basketball ( http://www.starsathletics.ca/ ) for their Spring - Summer program and he really enjoyed it despite being the youngest/smallest in the group. They go through basic drills and a 15min game.

They have a winter program coming up in January.

For anyone else interested, the Calgary Selects are running a new developmental league in the winter.

The league will involve 1 training session focusing on skill development and 1 night of games where the kids can experiment and try new moves in a controlled game environment refereed by CMBA officials.

The purpose of the games is to give the players the freedom to try new things without being restricted by strict offensive and defensive sets.

If you want more information, you can check out the website. Or, you feel free to shoot me a PM. I'm one of the coaches.
