In exchange for a couple of weeks in his golf-side, 2,000 sq ft house in Phoenix!!!

We arrived Wednesday night and came home yesterday (Sunday) to to -25 degree weather. BRRRR!!!! Can't believe how nice it was down there. Even managed to get a round in at Coyote Lakes golf course!!

Here's the project: (sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. Didn't bring my camera)

Nice work as always, what did you do for tools? Drive down with your own or borrow once you got there?

Yeah, I didn't want to chance getting turned away at the border if they knew I was going to do some work down there. I did bring my coveralls, though, and forgot they had my Olfa knife in them...they took that away. But after unraveling my coveralls, and dumping about 5 pounds of thinset and sand all over their counter, they did let me keep my tile nippers (http://www.sawcuttingspecialties.net/store/image/cache/data/Accessories/StoneTile/Acc%20StoneTile%20AB%20Tile%20Nippers%205-500x500.jpg) (they're always in my coveralls like an additional hand). They said they were "under the allowable 7" for tools. By 1/16th of an inch!!
My buddy bought what we needed down there. Tile cutter, trowels, etc. His garage is full of regular tools. Chop saw, drills, etc.

They have HUGE retail tile stores down there. Tile is dirt cheap too. That polished 24x24 porcelain, he got for under $4/sf!! And they have every conceivable tool a tile guy needs.

Nothing but tile. And what you see is about 1/5 of the entire store.

Yeah, I was always curious as to prices. I know I've gone through a HD when the dollar was at par and it's insanely cheap.

My guess is you still cost him more than some of the illegal workers, just through golf and booze consumption. ;)

Remember a guy on the plane one saying he got his whole 3,000 sq ft home restucco'd for something stupid like $4K materials and labour.

He did get a quote for that shower from two tile companies down there. $20,000 all-in. $USD!!! That included; Demo, Tile, Shower pan, glass, plumbing and labour. My price here would have been between $10,000-12,000. CAD!
Unless you know some shady cash-dealing Messicans, and can trust them inside your home, and can watch their every step, that they don't by-pass the waterproofing or hook up the plumbing improperly...then sure he could have saved some money.

This cost him roughly $3500 (including all material, my airfare, food, booze, and golfing) and lets me use the place for a few weeks.

Employees work for insaneley cheap prices. Licensed Ford Mechanics at a dealerhsip down there: lead mechanic gets $18/hour plus benefits.
Journeyman Tile setter; $20-22/hour.

But companies still charge top rates. Friend of mine who owns a $5 million dollar a year reno company in San Diego STARTS at $20,000 for even the most basic bathroom reno. (Complete 8x5 bathroom gut) Classic Home Improvements (http://www.choosechi.com/)

I can't believe people complain about the Mexicans down there...lol

Haha...we were talking about that. He said the hardest working people and nicest to deal with were the Mexicans. His gardner was there while I was working. He has 7 kids. 3 of them were there helping Dad with the landscaping. The most pleasant and polite kids I've ever met. And they worked HARD for the old man!!

I see that up here even. I remember in Richmond, the commercial fisherman were complaining about all the Asians taking over the fishing industry. They were interviewing the white fisherman at the Union Hall. They were all sitting around smoking and complaining about them taking over. Meanwhile, the Asians were out there fishing since 4 am!

Thanks. Appreciate the pricing just for comparison sake.
I guess people wouldn't brag about paying legit workers $20K for a bathroom.

Was the seat built out of wood or is it a prebuilt product?
Did you re-route the plumbing so the mixing valve was opposite the spout or it was like that?
Good idea for turning shower on but would add to cost.

The bench, Niche and shower pan system were all from Schluter.

He re-routed the mixing valve himself. Had to re-route it from the original positioning anyway. An extra 12 feet of PEX was pretty much no cost at all.
