What is everyone running in 2017?

Anyone upgrading and wanna sell me an older one? :D

Does anyone have one of those rearview mirror ones that also have back-up cam function?
example: https://www.amazon.ca/AUTO-VOX-Rearview-Recorder-Micro-SD-Included/dp/B01LXAI5LP/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487083308&sr=8-2&keywords=dash+cam+rear+camera

I run a Thinkware F750 but am doing an upgrade soon so mine will be up for sale in the marketplace

Great camera with really good functions. Plus picture is crystal clear

I'd recommend most of thinkwares lineup

i have had a coupe a119's lately, i cant recommend them, one of them wont charge the caps and the other cuts out all the time, i think its a flaky connection on the USB, i have been looking at the mini 0805's i still have a couple of ojocams which are mini 0803's and they have been rock solid for me.

I'd love to find one that has wifi and automatic cloud or pc syncing. (and still reliable and good PQ)

the A119 is the most recommended on most of the dash cam review sites. I was just thinking of buying two. Sorry to hear this dude
I assume you bought it from trusted sellers??

my a119 (GPS version) has been flawless for me. only problem i'm getting is a slight buzz due to vibration somewhere with the GPS mount. i'll probably get some kind of foam pad or something to dampen it. it's been fine through the cold temps.
i also find their support seems to be solid (dashcamtalk forums)

not sure about syncing, by xiaomi yi is wifi

just did some checking and i guess mine is a118c, is the 119 that much better?

I just hate that they continue to use mini usb instead of micro, i am not rewiring my car back to an old standard.

Mind if I ask what you are thinking of upgrading too? I've been researching to upgrade my 5yr old Blackvu and have been considering the 2 channel Thinkware F770 primarily for the parking mode functionality.

My vehicle was recently hit in the parking lot, I only have a front dashcam but it was able to captured the whole incident from the reflection in the store window. The guy denied hitting my van, and even went as far as telling his insurance company that I had backed into him. After showing my insurance company the video, the guy's insurance accepted 100% at fault.

Needless to say, I'm taking what I would have spent in deductible to buy myself a two channel dash cam.

Upgraded to a Blackvue DR470-2CH when I bought my 4runner. Pretty much the same as my old Blackvue, except this one doesn't overheat in the sun, lol.

Blackvue make an inline box that you can install that outputs the rear camera to RCA for a backup cam as well. I'm still trying to get clarification that it will work with my unit though.

A118 is 1080p
A119 is 1440p

You can never have enough MPs for trying to read plates.

That's said, both are popular and both have a lot of knock offs or units that failed QA and flowed back into the market via AliExpress or Gearbest. I think the ones didn't boot with VIOFO logos are suspected. There is a thread on redflagdeals that blew up about this awhile back.

VIOFO has a listed of verified resellers.

This is a timely thread as I too was thinking there must be upgrades out there by now, after how many years ago we had the group buy here.

Is 1440p resolution only starting to make its way into new models? I don't see a whole lot out there...

Does the A119 have the ability to turn off the screen after startup? I hate how the A118C doesn't have that ability.

I'm still running a Mini 0805 and been happy with it.

I'm still running a Mini 0805 and been happy with it. The A118C does let you turn the screen off. There's a setting called screen saver that lets you give it a time to turn screen off after, I think 1 min, 3 min or 5 min. Default setting is to stay on. When camera is on if you press the left button on the face it will turn the screen on/off manually as well.

Bumping this one – Has anyone upgraded or bought a new one since this thread was active?

Have my eye on the A119 & A119S, but am definitely considering something like the Blackvue’s that do both front & back in-one.

Thanks!

I believe you need this hard Wire kit if the box doesn't include it to function the parking mode so it don't drain your battery

That kit says it's for different models. I guess I'll have to double check with the BB employees. Thank you though.

Lastly, any recommendations for places to do installation?

Lol. I'll do it for a few beers.
Don't bother with the hardwire kit... pick up a cheap one at Princess auto, or I think I have a spare one I can sell you.

edit: ok maybe I'm wrong about not buying the hardwire kit. Since this camera seems to use some proprietary interfaces for its power supply, might not be so easy to string.

We have one in each of our 3 vehicles, all are Uniden and bought from London Drugs on sale...2 were on sale for around $80 and one for I believe $75, can't remember, they work great and the videos are super clear but I haven't had to actually get a license plate so I can't really comment on that.

If your willing to wait a month or so for shipping. This is not bad. I have one of these. Just don't cheap out on the memory card. Get one with a fast write speed.

My experience 1080p is minimum to pull a plate, even then you get may be 1/2 a car length. 720p, forget it unless you stop right behind it at a light.

Then there is night performance.

Budget friendly but more of a step up would be Viofo A118 or A119, which are ~$80 and ~$130 I think. A118 is 1080P and A119 is 1440p with much better night vision. I've had an A118 for about a year in my car.

OMG OMG You have a RX7..?!! Can I be your friend? :nut:

As for the dash cam. Depends on your budget. You don't need to really spend that much though. Some of the expensive cams are pretty much the same cams you can get cheap, they just have different plastic shells.

Im reposting the link above to the one ive been using for the year and a half. It was only $50. Whatever you do, don't cheap out on the memory card and write speed.

The suction mount is not the greatest, so transferring between vehicles may be a problem. But you can get buy a better suction mount. But the cams are so cheap, you can easily get 1080p for $20. You can get a hard wire kit too. Only downside is, it takes a while to be delivered.
Ive had a few misses too with idiot drivers and I've ended up looking at the cam after and thinking, thank fuck I got a cam.

Viofo A118/A119. Sits fully flush on the windshield so it's way lower profile than almost anything else out there. Can be had for <$100 for the A118, and like $120 for the A119. Running an A118 in mine as well as the GFs car. I'll echo the statement above about the SD card, get a good quality class 10 card to avoid issues. I had the Ojocam pro, which is a mini 0805, before and it was alright, I prefer the A118 though and it was less money. For <$50 the G1W is good, but for price difference I'd look at an A118.

Definitely get one sold by Viofo to avoid getting a cheap low quality unit. I'd recommend getting a hardwire kit if you want to continue with the low profile thing. Like this (https://www.amazon.ca/Official-VIOFO-Mini-Hard-Hardwire/dp/B01N5K9THL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498875013&sr=8-1&keywords=a119+hardwire), and then an add a fuse circuit for the type of fuses your vehicle has. Otherwise I'm sure there's a few shops that would hardwire a camera for you for not a ton of money.

Image quality on that A119 looks really good, impressed with it at night. Should tuck right up behind my A-pillar gauges so it is hard to see too.

Going to pick one of those up. Thanks for the help!

I suppose my last question about it, can you buy additional mounts for it? I watched a review but it wasn't totally clear how it attaches to the window - can I buy an extra mount so I can swap it between my truck and my car easily? I did see a review that talked about a GPS mount but he didn't say if the camera just slides onto the base, if it uses thumbscrew, or tools or anything like that

If I remember I'll try to grab a picture tomorrow. I'm not sure about additional mounts, but I'd imagine on Amazon or Alieexpress would have them. The mount attached with double sided tape, and the camera slides onto the mount. No thumbscrews just a channel on the camera and a part sticking up on the base.

Edit: Pics. The channel in the camera goes over the thing that sticks off the base and slides down and clicks in. Just slide up and pull off to remove. I can't even see the cord from the drivers seat as it's blocked and tucked up into the headliner.

Something I observed when trying to find a decent cheap option is that resolution really doesn't tell you a lot about ability to read plates. I have seen several cams that have a high enough resolution, but they have so much video compression that it ends up blurring the plate anyway, unless you are really close and there is no motion. Make sure whatever you get has a high enough data rate that it doesn't have to smear the details out of the picture in order to write it.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/BlackVue-DR430-2CH-16GB-Blackbox-Dashcam-GPS-Power-Magic-Pro-Lowest-Price/152529220081?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140620091118%26meid%3D4580cfa2425e4725bdfb510d279d290f%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D152529076943&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

That link is for a DR430 that records in 720P? Wrong link?

Anyone have the ThinkWare ones? Heard the video quality on those are amazing

I placed a wrong link, the 650 are available at Best Buy for the same price as the ones in eBay.

I got a new Thinkware X500 and will report in the quality in a couple of days.

It will be replacing my first gen Blackvue DRG400 HD.

I've narrowed my choices to the ThinkWare F770 and the BlackSys CH-100

I've got a thinkware x500d (front and rear recording), and it works wonderfully. I also managed to hardwire it myself (with inspiration from jwslam) :D

The quality from both cameras is great, they both record at 1080p. It can be a bit sensitive to "incidents", such as going over certain bumps. That is probably my only complaint.

Any accessory fuse that turns on with the car. But the Thinkware above has a hard wire kit that has both constant power and accessory power because of its park mode so it's a bit harder.

I'm open to giving more inspiration ;)

Can't you just use a Power Magic Pro? It should be the same voltage and concept to any hard-wiring.

I installed mine over the weekend. It appeared in Best Buy last week for $249 so I had to snag it as it was the cheapest 2 Channel I found.

My only gripe was the gigantic mount to the windshield and no spare rear camera adhesive.

Also, the orientation of the Rear Camera is upside down, which does not make sense because the ThinkWare logo and brandings were correct if the camera is facing Left Side looking in from the outside of the rear window.

The rear Blackvue I heard is the same way, upside down if you mount the way the logo/branding is...kind of silly

I have a pretty small YouTube channel and was lucky enough to be put in contact through a friend with the Blackvue marketing coordinator in Korea. They sent me out the new DR750S 2CH for me to review etc.! A big upgrade from my Ojocam which has since completely died and won't even power on anymore, sadly. I've owned it 2 years. I'll post some videos of the 750's quality once I get it setup!! Going to pick up the Power magic pro to use, too.

BlackBoxMyCar sells those for $9.99, I was going to order a few as well to make it easier. Where did you pick yours up and whats the rating on them? The ones I see online/Greggs Distributors show max amp 10A Fuse. The ones BlackBoxMyCar sells is 20A fuse.

Amazon has a [email protected]$ that claims 30A each fuse (shipped from china mind you)

What else are you planning on hooking up that you need bigger than a 20A fuse? A 5A fuse is even overkill for just a dashcam. Technically the fuse should be sized to protect the wire not the load. Also with you car being newer make sure exactly what fuses it has most brand new vehicles went to micro2 fuses which aren't that common to find in stores. (micro2 fuse look like mini fuses when installed but have different blades you will have to pull one and check)

i bought a 10 pack on amazon or from some china reseller, i dont remember, they were super cheap though (you can get a 5 or 10 pack on amazon for like $2 each), they come with a 10a fuse, but they're like 12awg wire so they can handle 15, but you shouldn't need it.

I actually mounted mine to the rear view mirror housing in my car. It actually works better for the wide lens because it sits higher. IIRC, mine came with spare rear camera adhesive :dunno:

I didn't really pay attention to the branding for the rear view cam lol. I just rotated the camera and stuck it on.

Recently incurred a car accident. It made my old car total lost. I wish I should buy a dashcam earlier so that I have evidence about the incident. Anyone has idea which one is good? (I had a car seat in the car which is no damage at all, but the insurance company said I can't have it anymore since the car seat is with the car. First time to hear that so feel surprise and a lost again. T_T)

The Viofo A119s is probably the best bang for buck

I have the Viofo G1WS which is the same picture quality of the A119s but lacks the SD card error notification and stealth

Memory Express has the YI Cameras. These are also highly recommended on the dashcamtalk forums. My buddy bought 2 from light in the box. Shipping took about 80 days but he got it for $46 each

exactly... $120 is pretty cheap insurance, i pay that every month for my car insurance, and it wont give me the evidence a dashcam will.

Yeah Viofo and Spy Cam are both fine OCD tronic is ok too,.. blackboxmycar was just the most common one to put it on sale.

Just make sure its the A119S V2 (the S and the V2 are important)

As long as its fulfilled by amazon you have no issues, they always side with the buyer, i know, i sell on amazon, lol, it really sucks for sellers sometimes, but its painless for buyers.
