View Full Version : Knee Injury: Doctor first? Or Physio First?

I hurt my knee a couple weeks ago. I have chronic knee pain to begin with, but this is a different kind of discomfort than I'm used to. I suspect it's a meniscus.

Do you suggest going to a doctor first? Or, should I just go straight to physio since he'll likely just send me there anyways?

Get it covered by benefits? I had to get a Dr. note for my shoulder to get my benefits to cover it for me. Depends on your provider

Doctor first to be safe

As stated above, for coverage from benefits... but also for the physio's piece of mind that's it's been cleared to be worked on. Knees are probably pretty straightforward but I've had some strains and things in the past that the physio wanted to make sure there was no fracture or anything

Make an appointment at the Acute Knee Injury Clinic ASAP:

A GP won't diagnose the injury so you're 50/50 that they send you for an MRI or refer you to physio. This clinic is run by a knee surgeon, and they will diagnose and put a treatment plan together while the injury is fresh and before it heals incorrectly.

I went to GP first, who recommended me to a knee specialist, and then got an MRI.

I'd skip the GP.

That's how I found out about my MCL/PCL tear. I now regularly see a physiotherapist.

Good people there when I went there to get my knee cleaned up.

I don't get my work benefits for another week and a bit. Should I wait before seeing someone?

This! They can get you in very quickly too. There is a limitation though for time period from injury date as it needs to be acute.

Doctor for sure. If it is a meniscus tear you'd want to get the damaged cartilage removed or else it will continue to bother you down the road. I'm still feeling the effects of my knee injury from over a year ago and now looking into getting the fragments removed.

When I injured my back, the advice I got was to go to a good physio. So I went to Lakeview Physio (http://lakeviewphysio.ca), who after assessing my range of motion and whatnot, advised me to go see a doctor ASAP as they suspected I was actually injured. Turns out, herniation.
