Can somebody recommend a good eye doctor / optometrist?

Over the last 4 years we have tried 4 different ones near us based on google reviews and we have yet to find one that we are comfortable with. We are looking for a doctor who will actually look at us and our kids properly instead of just patting our kids on the head and saying "there MAY be a problem" but their vision is "good enough" (yes, exact words from the eye doctor we saw at Hakim Optical in Crowfoot) just to make everybody happy.

I don't really care where in the city (or even, near the city) they are located I just want somebody who is competent and can actually properly evaluate us and our kids to determine whether we need new glasses or if the kids need them as well.

My wife has been going to the optometrist by downtown The Bay for years.

Went there in January to get my eyes checked after years not having it done, saw a mother with a toddler for an eye exam.

Edworthy Vision downtown is really good for appointments and prescriptions, just don't buy anything there as their prices are insane. Take their prescription and go to Costco, Clearly.ca, or wherever else you like to go. That's been working out great for me anyway.

I have been really happy with Edworthy. Although the Hot optometrist left, so I'm sad now. Office staff is pretty good though.

My kids go to Bishop and associates in Northland Mall. Good hours, and free parking, and a food court to feed the beasts before or after.

Don't know if they're good with kids but the optometrist at the FYIDoctors in Bankers Hall is smoking hot and knows what she's doing.

Ophthalmologists differ from optometrists and opticians in their levels of training and in what they can diagnose and treat. As a medical doctor who has completed college and at least eight years of additional medical training, an ophthalmologist is licensed to practice medicine and surgery.

:dunno: Go to an actual Dr you do know the folks at Hakim are not Dr's? Then it's free and you don't have to worry about the angle of them just trying to push product. You do have to book like 6 months in advance though...

Alright... Not looking for a hot optometrist - my kids are 3,5 and 6 so they aren't into that yet but I'll ask again when they're getting to be teenagers. Seems like there were at least a couple real suggestions here worth checking into.

The idea about an ophthalmologist is a good one but I thought they were typically for investigating diseases of the eye and such and typically didn't do routine vision checks?

Highly recommend Dr, Margaret Penny at Mayfair Eye Care near Chinook Centre. I used to see her when her practice was in NW. Some of my relatives and a lot of my coworker's kids see her.

My friends who are in the industry they always say ophthalmologist's prescriptions are usually off since they don't do routine examinations often.

Alberta Health provides payment for all eye examinations performed by an ophthalmologist under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).

It's free and higher quality IMHO... You just have to willing to wait(You can't just drop in for an eye exam) and find someone who wants to be your physician. It's where I got all my eye exams done as a kid and still do if I am not lazy with booking my exams.

I used to go to an ophthalmologist but equipment was dated, and it was 6mo wait to get in (which was sometimes canceled if he had to do surgery). My whole family has switched and every one of us has made the comment that our prescriptions are better.

A good optometrist has equipment that will tell them if you need to go see an ophthalmologist, at least that's what I've always been told.

I see an opthamologist for a specific eye health concern, and if I end up needing surgery, he'll be the one who does it. But he's a classic canadian medical specialist. Zero manners, and always in a rush. A trip to his office is bare minimum two hours. Pretty sure he wouldn't do an eye exam if I wanted him to. I have an optometrist for that.

I use Dr. Tariq Rajan from Optik Boutik in Quarry Park...

Been seeing him for years. He's been nothing short of stellar for my needs.

He's also at Calgary Vision Care in Crossiron Mall beside Lenscrafters.

Awesome - thanks for all the input we're going to give a few of these places a call and see who we can get in with!

Not her (clearly). Guess it's changed from about a year and a half ago. She was a smoking hot red head though
