Well crap. Was at COP this morning, was in the park and last run I landed a jump and got a shooting pain in my lower back.

Pretty sure it's just a pulled muscle or something as the pain went away about an hour later but a few hours after that I seized up.

Can hardly walk now, pain appears to be on my right side about a quarter of the way up my back.

Been using the foam roller as well as stretching my hips out which seems to help. Have had a heating pad on it for a while now.

Still can't walk more that a few feet. Crawling or walking really hunched over feels better.

Any suggestions of your go to? I never take anything for pain but I was considering some robaxacet tomorrow as it seems to help my dad and I figure moving around and keeping the blood flow is probably better than sitting around.

I think I was just super dehydrated today.

I fighting my own issue right now, bad sciatica down the left side.

Aleve can help as an anti-inflammatory.

Alternate heat and ice see which feels better for you.

If the pain gets real intense you can take a Tylenol to reduce the pain sent to the sensory system and combine with Aleve to reduce inflammation (NSAID).

More importantly see a doctor or call 811 and just ask some questions. They're fairly helpful. I'm booked for a MRI Wednesday. See what the hell is going on.

I feel you pain bro lol.

Don't push it. I would see a doctor asap. Sounds like maybe a slipped disc? Best of luck.

Darkane, I feel your pain man. Left sciatic for me too. Sometimes my whole leg will cramp up and tighten and I just roll around on the floor in agony trying to alleviate it / wait for it to fade away.

I don't think humans are supposed to walk on 2 feet or sit/drive all day. Stupid spine

How was your landing? Do you think you may have landed with straight legs or cased the knuckle on something bigger? Which jump at COP did this occur on? You might want to get that looked at since it could be a compression fracture...

No offense guys, but let's try not to self diagnose on beyond lol. That's not gonna make the OP feel any better.

OP, you should have iced it before heating to reduce inflammation first. Also, avoid foam rolling anything, you have no idea what the injury is. Rolling could potentially make it physically worse, even though it feels better neurologically.

I went through the same feeling you're describing now, although mine was weightlifting related. It also had nothing to do with my spine, but rather a muscle (Quadratus Lumborum). Go to your family doctor and request for an x-ray. From personal experience, I would take also take the MD's diagnosis with a grain of salt. If there is nothing wrong with your spine, I would seek a PROPER physiotherapist, or specialist.

I personally found a soft tissue specialist who helped me with my injury, and more.

That is the weird thing, it was a great landing haha. Just landed and a second later got a shooting pain.

I honestly think it was that I was just super dehydrated and my muscles were tight.

Woke up this morning, had to crawl to the bathroom again. But I worked on my accuball for 45 minutes slapped on a ton of tiger balm and could walk again. Went for a slow walk with the dog this morning and I seem to be able to function pretty normally with the exception of a decent amount of pain as long as I don't sit down for too long and seize back up. Last night I had to have my gf support me to get from the restaurant to the car, so seeing improvements.

Have decided against painkillers/muscle relaxers today as I want to know if any specific movements trigger it.

Yea tej I ended up icing it last night and that helped a lot I think.

My dad has had a lot of lower back problems and I'm built exactly as he is so I'm guessing it's just a genetics thing I'll have to deal with now that I'm getting older.

Going to fernie Friday so better be good by then hahaha

Thanks for the suggestions, will play it by ear.

I feel for you man. The only other real injury I've had is breaking my wrist 3 times and I'd take that over this any day

Ok weird but yeah it's somewhat common for people to think they have pulled their backs but end up with compression fractures in the spine from bad landings.

You're right, they aren't. Injury results from force exceeding load capacity. If you train your body to sit all day, load capacity will diminish until basic activities cause injury.

OP - pay attention to mobility and movement. Once you're able to get around, I'd highly recommend you go see Dr. MacKinnon @ ProActive Health Group. She will assess your goals and deficiencies, and may possibly refer you to Dr. Tan @ http://www.drjustintan.ca

Your goal should be prehabilitative work after you recovery from your injury. Being proactive with this approach won't just mitigate injury, it will also make you a better athlete.

Here's a great example of the benefits of prehab:

No way, I grew up with Justin's brother. Cool beans!

Yea I might have to get working with someone as I get further into my 30s. My dad and I both have "sway backs" which I think puts me at a higher risk of back injury. My dad has always been fit (works out every day and still has a 6 pack in his 60s). Whereas I'm a little overweight. Been really trying to cut down for snowboarding as it think it's a huge risk snowboarding or skiing while being overweight. Already a high impact sport..

Update, moving a lot better. So I'm hoping it was just a scare and nothing serious. If it doesn't keep improving I will be visiting the doctor this week.

Now it feels like I did a day of heavy deadlifts and didn't stretch properly after. I can now kind of isolate the pain and I'm pretty sure it's actually the glute on the right side, kind of where it attaches.

Starting to get way better. Been doing back focused yoga every day for 30mins, robaxacet to cope with the spasms and tension, hot baths and more stretching before bed.

Took a big risk today and went to kickboxing. Ended up being all kick technique today so had to take it really easy but everything seems ok.

More yoga (I think I might just continue that indefinitely) and robaxacet tonight. Leaving for fernie tomorrow!!!

Excellent news! Don't overdo it.

Had my MRI today. Results Friday. Thankfully they managed to get the entire image without the contrast dye. Wasn't looking forward to that shit lol.

Best of luck man. What is the deal with the dye, does it burn really bad?

Could have some side effects like nausea, allergic etc. It's not all bad I suppose just didn't want to deal with it.

THIS!
And don't stretch it either. If you tore something, it's going to get worse.

And you're doing kickboxing now?!? Scouts for UFC in the house that night or what?
 :banghead:
