Hi Beyonders,

I am toying with the idea leaving my job, selling our home, and taking my young family for a road trip across Canada and the US before starting over again. What would your recommendations be?

Criteria:
1) Safe
2) Spacious
3) Relatively good on gas (open to electric)
4) Durable
5) Self-driving nanny included as a backup
6) Somewhat fun to drive

Option B might be to take European delivery of a vehicle and do a tour there.

(note, fuel economy takes a backseat to nearly all other categories for me haha)

Best vehicle for touring? Why, a 5 series touring of course.

A V-Wagon would be good choice too of course.:poosie:

Was literally going to say this. Do any of the other cars have a built in vacuum cleaner? Your argument is invalid.

Good point, mine came with the built in blower instead. Not as useful for cleaning up cheerios in the back seat.

You sure? Didn't the last 5 get touring models up here?

Damn that new 5 series is cosy inside. Awesome car.

As for the Honda Vans, as the question: What car does BMW's service department use as a service shuttle?

One of those new Volvo V90 wagons. I saw one on a carrier truck and it looked stunning. And it was brown, so obviously an avid Jalop reader taking delivery. Although they don't come with a manual transmission.

The V60 Polestar Edition wagon is another option.

My friend's $1200 a month car payment says otherwise

Traverse/Enclave/Acadia are the best value non-truck platform, yet large sized SUV.

I believe they have more interior space than the old MDX, Highlander or Pilot, but not sure about compared to the new one.

basically like the pacifica... a AWD mini-van but they are good on gas and have a reputable tow rating.

Otherwise honestly nothing is better than a Sienna/odyssey for "touring"

I believe they are quite a bit larger than the caravan counterparts as well... but in both the new and used market, the caravan could be had for fractions of the latter.

Any reason a small RV isn't on your list? Would be super nice to have something you could stand up in and have almost zero setup at each stop.

I know it doesn't fit with a few of your points but as a kid I would have loved to do an RV trip with the family.

The 5-Series Touring is set to launch in June, meaning only 25 years and five months until we can legally import them here. Mark your calendars.http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/news/a32478/2017-bmw-5-series-wagon/

I agree, couldnt imagine doing this with kids with out some amenities. Nice to also be able to sleep along the way if needed etc.

I would save the "touring" driving experience for after kids. Although i like that idea haha.

Road trek SS Agile without a doubt. There are a couple of them for sale around Alberta.

Young family and big road trip, Honda or Toyota man, nothing else holds it's value, even if brought to the states. Both use all the new nannies and neither you have to worry about finding a dealer if something comes up. People are still fighting to get well equipped Pilots and Highlanders.

I love love love Volvos SUV but I would never buy one, just lease.

Looks like the Sienna is 0.7 faster in the 0-60 department vs the Odyssey.

Model X seems interesting but the price.
M550i looks quite nice.

Good suggestions.

Seats five, sleeps two - guess the kids could sleep on the floor.
