Helping a friend who has a 2008 Audi A6 Wagon and both front windows are 'crunchy' at certain spots when you roll the window up and down. We took the door apart and removed the regulator assembly the other day but couldn't really pinpoint the issue. It seems like this is fairly common, can anyone with audi experience point us to the likely culprit?

The fact that the crunching seems to occur at roughly the same location when rolling up or down led me to believe that the gearing in the regulator motor might be the culprit but when running the motor assembly by itself it ran smoothly and without grinding. I tried to load the output shaft with my hand and still ran smooth without issue or noise.

The cable assembly and plastic clips and sliders all appeared to be in order without damage or obstruction.

We want to avoid throwing parts at the problem. If any audi techs / enthusiast can share their experience it would be greatly appreciated.

I would be inclined to start with the simple and easy things first. Maybe throw some lubricant into the tracks and see if that frees it up a bit?
