The drama started just after 10 a.m. after an unknown person hopped into a brand new Porsche at the CN railway yard at 50th Avenue and Barlow Trail S.E. and made away with the luxury sports car.
Calgary police Det. Travis Ibach said the thief eluded officers through sheer velocity, who was observed fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.
The bright green 911 Turbo tore north onto Deerfoot Trail at Peigan Trail, dangerously weaving through the late-morning traffic at speeds often approaching 200 km/h.
Followed north out of the city by Calgary’s HAWCS police helicopter, Airdrie RCMP took over tracking the stolen car.
“We didn’t make any attempts at a pursuit,” said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Curtis Peters. “The speeds were too high, there was too much of a risk to public safety.”
Travelling north on Highway 2 out of Airdrie, the suspect turned around at Highway 72 near Crossfield and proceeded to travel south again, cutting west at Highway 567 and then south back into the city via Symons Valley Road.
Anybody with information on the theft should call Calgary police at 403-266-1234, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Ballsy move there.
Wonder what colour green it was....

Are the police so inept that the car got away from a helicopter? Maybe they should check back at the rail yard. It would be hilarious if the owner took his own car.

No, airdrie RCMP took over once it left Calgary.
So, protip, if you're being chased by HAWCS just piss-bolt out of the city at top speed.

HAWCs has a limited range - if it had been on station for a few hours already, chances are it would have been low on gas and could not have kept up with the car for very long. HAWCs has done some out of town patrols before.
The EC120 top seed is 150 KIAS, which tranlates to about 275 kph - at those speeds it burns an awful lot of gas.

Unlike an airplane, does a turbine helicopter burn more gas the faster it goes? I thought the turbine was always running at 100%? I suppose fuel flow might change but by that much?

We'll have to keep an eye out for this one at Pick a Part.

hahaha, wow. that can actually be a possibility...
At least the car had a proper break in..
I'd like to know who the car had so much fuel in it though after being on a rail car?

In most turboshaft cases the N2 (or PT - depending on which manufacturer) turns at a fixed rate (98-100%) and the N1 (or CT) varies according to the demands for power from the pilot. Torque is the limiting factor.
Overcoming air friction (leading edge stall -> asymmetrical lift etc.) contribute to massive increases in fuel consumption for these ships at speed. They also vibrate like a mofo close to VNE.

Well the police was looking for a guy wearing dark pants, so he took the pants off. Somehow the police figured it out.

He was caught the 2nd time because the Mercedes was in transport mode, (new dealer inventory) max speed 40KM/hr as per the post on FB group.
The Porsche was a customer car en route to Ontario so hence keys in car, no transport mode.
But from FB post, this location is where they stage all the brand new dealer cars offloading. Better beef up security this time or more copy cat thefts

Helicopter engine functionality and management is similar to a turbo-prop.

Just couldn't understand how a helicopter would burn more fuel travelling faster (makes total sense how an airplane can) but it makes perfect sense that as the "load" on the rotors increases, the FF must be increased to compensate. I was thinking strictly in terms of %NG/N2 and not the other way around. Thanks for the clarification.

Parasitic drag still increases as the square of KIAS - with all aircraft.
Want to hear something really whacked? One bladed helicopters (with a counterbalanced rotor) are actually quite efficient and eliminate (obviously) neighbouring blade turbulence. :nut:

Is it that easy in Vancouver to ship a car overseas bypassing customs and such?

Yes, a ton of the shipping/receiving at the port is run/controlled by organized crime (through holding companies, etc.).
Vancouver disbanded their ports police back in the 90s I think - and things went south ever since.

Even if it wasn't criminals running the docks, it's been a longstanding problem everywhere because our laws are pretty lax.

When I used to work for Air Canada (after 9/11) it was obvious that some of the baggage handlers were involved in drug smuggling as we'd occasionally get a 747 in the hangar for maintenance that had cocaine bricks stashed in some of the lower belly hatches - only accessible to the ground staff.....obviously forgotten by someone ..... oops.
.. and these are the incidents that the mechanics talked about - many probably went unreported.
