Went Strava segment hunting for the first time yesterday. Felt like a bit of a douche passing people going full bore, but ended up with a couple of trophies. Got me thinking about what some of the best segments around the city are. I like the short sprints, so Inglewood Bird Sanctuary has always been a favorite. That new one near Quarry Park from where they closed off the path and diverted the bikers onto the road is pretty fun too.

These are the sections where I push harder for sure, just off the top of my head.

In my area, Rocky Ridge Road up from the station, Royal Oak Drive, Bearspaw North just north of 1A, Bearspaw North just south of 262, 85th South from 261 to Burma, Tuscany Hill.

On my commute, Bowmont pathway, Silver Springs Blvd, Spiller Road.

Cochrane Hill, Range Road 40 to top of Cochrane, 567 by Big Hill Springs both directions.

Someone went up that at 35km/h? No way that isn't assisted.

I love this segment in the morning but have to be early enough to avoid traffic jam.

Just has to admire stats on Strava since I have trouble pushing my fat ass to 40km/h even on flat ground.

I just go hard whenever I can and hope for the best. Or just turn on the little motor hidden in my seat post :bigpimp:

I used to hate that hill.

And then I found this:
https://www.strava.com/segments/2480503

I've never made it up all the way without getting off and I'm too terrified to go down because it's so steep.

One of my favourites, but I pretty much love the entire stretch from Weaselhead to Heritage park and then Rockyview Hospital to Riverdale:

I don't find the 25% hill that bad - it's all about keeping momentum up it. Not sure I could climb it seated - pretty much have to commit and hammer the pedals all the way up.

My only current KOM is a personal favorite..going the speed limit on a bike is fun (and no hill!). Get a decent draft off of vehicles, but watch for the idiots who try to take the right turn at heritage early

the 4 bridge sprint in fish creek is great, provided the tourist numbers are low. Really fun early in the morning when you can fly.

The first 2 times I went up the 25% climb I had to get off. But Penguin's right, you just need some momentum and make sure you're in the right gear. I've also felt like I was going to go over backwards too I was pulling so hard.

I've got no KOM's, but close on a couple. Both my favorites. I think I like sprinting.

Third one this

Fourth on this

I want to meet Tom Amberaidis. He's tops on so many Strava segments.

The first one must be a pathway, not a trail? I'll go give it a shot with the 350w and hard pedaling

116 km/h on one of the segments... Definitely in a car. 26 hour ride only on roads accessible by car?:nut:

Or maybe I'm just a hater.

Here's another fun grunty climb if you're in the south:

i've done that before a few times on my way to work when i'm commuting down south. tough to go for any speed records with your work bag and bike lock in tow but def warms you up quick. going down way more fun but bit dicey given all the sharp turns and potential blind spots
