I think the fines are up 14% from those figures, (but maybe more?) 1 km/h over is now $78 and 50 km/h over is $474.

So your ticket should in the $203 ballpark.

$150 unless they changed it. 30 over is $177, again unless they changed it. I haven't got a speeding ticket in almost a decade though. I think the max used to be $371 before court, and now it's $474, so I suspect the 25 over is proportionately higher too.

Slow down next time you see an American vehicle parked on the side of the road, they stick out like a sore thumb

The system is set up as:

Photo radar costs are different than an actual cop pulling you over. Talk to crown on your court date and get it reduced 40%. Literally just have to ask "can you reduce it". Don't even need an explanation.
Also, I don't think they always get clear enough pics to prosecute with. I've sped past a few and not received anything in the mail

That used to be the case, but they have since made both photo and pull-over tickets equal with each other. The former is only different since you do not get any demerits.

I received a photo radar ticket today. Looked at it and it says 75 in 60 zone so $120. Then I looked at the date and time: JUN 11 in the morning! SAME LOCATION. I had no idea I got flashed that morning since the sun was already out :( So this ticket is unexpected.

Looks like the one for 18th will be coming soon *sigh*

So if I bring both tickets to the JOP, will he say "two tickets huh within a week? you speed too much! why should I reduce them anyhow?"

Or....

Just slow down a bit because you know there's a good possibility of an officer sitting there taking pictures - it's like 10th Street NW just as you start going up the hill by Riley Park, there's often a unit parked on the grass on the east side of the road taking pictures of NB speeders. Keen drivers will make note of such memorable locations and adjust accordingly. Now I guess one can play speeding Russian roulette but I like keeping my monies in my pocket and it especially feels much better with those monies in my pocket when I've gone past an officer and the pictures being taken are not of me. I guess the reason officers keep using these spots is that they continue to prove to be good honeypots.

Just curious as to where you may have heard that? You can commit and offence 10 different times in 10 minutes and get charged for each occurrence. Time between charges doesn't nullify the validity of a charge, so I'm just wondering about the provenance of what you said. :)

This happened to me and a co-worker told me this happened to them as well and one of the tickets was dropped and that was what the JP said. This was about 15 years ago....... maybe he just got a really nice JP. Other then that I have no proof of this claim and I ended up paying my two tickets cause I just started a new position and couldn't afford to take the time off to dispute them. Photo radar is just a cash cow and not really an effective way to deter speeders since you can just go to the JOP and get it reduced every time. So even with SEKS $470 total for 3 tickets, it'll probably be only around $300 that is actually collected if the time is taken to go see the JOP. No demerits so no real long term effect if you keep on offending. Anyways, it's just public info that is being provided, not encouragement to keep doing it.

I would just pay it and stop wasting time. This kind of frequency, you won't get any break from JOP. Unless you go 3 different times and get 3 different JOP.

How about running an app like Waze for warning OR just pay attention to the road? Unless you drive all around town for a living, there is no way you don't notice all the cameras you face daily.

How about running an app like Waze for warning OR just pay attention to the road? Unless you drive all around town for a living, there is no way you don't notice all the cameras you face daily.

That's the scary part. Hes probably not even paying attention to the road and speeding. I mean how can you miss an SUV with a huge roof rack with equipment, usually with hazards on, on the side of a road? I know some are sometimes hidden behind soundwalls, but if you cant see and react to most of them, you're either going too fast, or not paying attention and likely arent going to be able to react to a sudden emergency (kid running across road, piece of debris, crash, etc)

I really don't feel sorry for people who get photo radar tickets. I've gotten a few when I first moved out here and learned my lesson. I was pretty new to the playground zone concept, got a few, and paid them cause I know I fucked up. I have since not had a single ticket and have since slowed down my driving in general - especially in highly patrolled roadways (which is the whole point of it).

So for those who say photo radar is ineffective, it certainly worked for me and it has its purpose. Maybe that's just my experience.

At the end of the day photo radar really only makes money because people chronically speed, and if people slowed down the city/police would be far less likely to invest in such expensive equipment to catch so few speeders. Its a basic business model, but instead of customers they just have bad drivers who are always in a rush for usually no reason whatsoever. The cash-cow argument could be true, but that's only because people just keep speeding.

Never seen a sneaky spot in my life here. Low brow shit like at the bottom of hills and stuff sure, parked amongst cars on 14th maybe (anyone with even a portion of a brain knows to expect photo radar on that road), but NEVER seen a sneaky one in Calgary. You can always tell the long time Calgary residents that still brake on Deerfoot when they see a '96 Caravan with its 4ways on parked on the shoulder lol..

ACTUAL radar traps with real live cops doing laser can be sneaky especially on Highways from bridges and hiding in Alleyways off of McKnight etc but photo radar to me has NEVER been sneaky, they're so obvious! Hell remember the red light cam van, it even had a huge banner on the side that said it was a red light camera van and people STILL got tickets lol. People need to just open their eyes and get off their phones. Or maybe Im just lucky and getting ornery in my old age since the abcars days and getting pink tickets for doubling the speed limit on the QEII and stuff.

Edmonton is a whole other ball game. THEY are actually sneaky. Variety of vehicles, from bridges and works trucks and out the back cab window and shit. That's bad action. Canmore uses the same methods also.

They hide behind a buss shelter on south bound 14st right after crossing over the bow, but like others said, once you know of the main spots it is east to avoid. I'm also an advocate for photo radar as it cuts down on actively patrolled speed traps which are way less predictable and carry harsher consequences.

I too once had a perfect record for never receiving photo radar tickets, spanning 15 years.... until I got nabbed by an SUV sitting in a private parking lot, in the dark, snapping photos. The same could be said of all spots they sit that habitual speeders complain about. That 700 or so meters from Kensington to the start of the hill will cost you about 11 seconds of your life to do 50 versus 65.. push the envelope to about 54 and you're down to about 7 precious seconds.

I take it you've never sped in your life? I used to talk like you until I realized how hypocritical it was and I was trying to rationalize to myself that I was more intelligent than the average driver in determining where and when speeding was appropriate.

By your rationale we should follow Cochrane and make more areas max 30 and everyone should just quit complaining because they're only losing a few minutes a day.

90% of drivers think they are above average drivers.

And fuck this specific location... they are always there.

Why be angry? You know about the location and as such, adjust accordingly. What's the big deal of losing a few more seconds of your life to not get a ticket?

Should we lower all speed limits in the city? Cause you know, it's only adding seconds to people's commute. No big deal.

That was my first ticket in 6 years there. I make sure to report it on waze every time now. The shag money pit at stoney trail is now extra special because the grass is never cut so it can fully hide the cars now. 60 zone of course.

You guys, so predictable. Sure I speed but not all that often. As for lowering speed limits everywhere, wow, that's quite a knee jerk reaction. This really is a pointless discussion, there are those that will continue to be angry about photo radar and there are those who continue to go about their lives without it really bothering them - I kind of like being less angry.

Hah, you know nothing of my handle's hype as it has absolutely zero to do with speed or anyone even remotely automotive related. Fail.

C'mon man it was a joke. Just like you nickname is based on a joke 30+ years ago that only close family and friends know.

Brought in the two that I got on crowchild. First time ever I got a lady JOP, not that old grumpy grey-hair guy. She threw the $120 out and made me pay the $175. I left the third one (elbow drive) in the car so I didn't bring it in. OH well, I will have to make another visit in a few weeks time for that third one.
