Can't open specific web pages using home internet connection.

Hey all,

I've run into a strange problem. For some reason I can't connect to two forums I go on using my home internet connection. I'm getting a DNS error "connection timed out". This happens regardless of which device I try. However the sites load fine using data connection on my phone. I've tried different browsers too and still no dice.

There's nothing controversial about either site, I'm only registered on one of them and the other I'm just a lurker.

The websites are watchuseek.com and diecastaircraftforum.com

Other than those two sites not loading everything else is normal.


I've never seen an issue like it. Anybody have any ideas?

I had the same problem years ago on Shaw. A few different sites, including National Geographic :nut:. Shaw kept telling me it was my computer, and wouldn't do anything to help, so I switched to Telus.

Try changing your DNS settings to google (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks. Just tried that. Still no dice. Tried going back to automatic and still doesn't work :(

I'm thinking a program on your computer is preventing access, and that's probably crap antivirus.

What antivirus (and the like) do you use, and do those sites open with "Safe mode with networking"?

Not using any antivirus other than windows defender built into Windows 10.

When you changed it to 8.8.8.8, you should really clear DNS first before trying again. Go back and change DNS to 8.8.8.8, then in the command prompt type "ipconfig /flushdns" and then try again. DNS has DNS caching, which is to prevent unnecessary DNS queries to same sites that were already resolved. Doing the flushdns clears out the cache. Do that and see if it's still the same. When you set the DNS in your client you are bypassing whatever is set in your router from your ISP, so if it still doesn't work...there is something terrible wrong elsewhere.

It is on your ISP's end. Both my home & work computer use Shaw internet and a certain website I need for reference for my car is totally unaccessible. I have to take my smartphone off WiFi and access it through Telus's network if I want to read it.

Yesterday I did notice Telus work vans around my neighbourhood doing work on something underground. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

this happens sometimes when there is a routing problem between the two providers.

When we used verizon business internet we could not receive mail from many google IP blocks on their mail servers or even ping 8.8.8.8. I let them know and they fixed it the same day, but it problem was happening for two weeks not sure what mission critical QOS, network monitoring means now a days.
