The exhaust shop he took it to, advised him against it but he paid a pretty penny to get it done. Does this actually diminish HP in an AMG? His car is all over the Facebook groups.

"we set a price pretty high"

uh-huh.... so instead of just saying "no this is a stupid idea", they jacked up the price super high and then wondered why the guy tried to screw him after?

Please don't tell me you are trying to shift even an ounce of blame onto the shop...

Ravi IIRC has done tons of work (great work) for beyond and as a reputable shop probably the last thing he wanted was to have this abomination associated with his place. At the end of the day he is a business and I'm sure with slower times it is tough to say no to some profit despite it being hideous to all.

Why not just say "I won't do this"

Furthermore, even if he thought it was tacky... if he is going to do the work anyway, why does it matter?

Since when do shops decide "Oh yeah, this is pretty tacky, so yeah fuck you... I am going to quote your ass an extra 50%"
To give Ravi the benefit of the doubt, I think a lot of assumptions are being made here by you Sugarphreak. Ravi said it wasn't a good idea; he didn't say it was tacky. Perhaps there were issues in regards to the design itself making it a bad idea. Next, we don't know Ravi jacked up the price as a last resort. It could be because he wanted to do it proper and then quoted him something that would have been way more than a typical exhaust job after initial discussions of saying it was a bad idea. So it may not be that Ravi quoted something, then jacked it up even more just because.

my question is... is it even real C63 AMG??

colinxx235
07-31-2017, 01:48 PM
I've seen his Ravi's name on here enough to know that a lot of Beyonders trust him, which is why I am so utterly, utterly disappointing by that post

Trying to defraud somebody is a mega douche move, so no, I am not shifting the blame or justifying that that one bit

How is that defrauding? At the end of the day the guy asked for a product, was given a price, agreed to price and received said product. I didn't list every reason the price was up. While yes I pointed out that I'm sure the request was not what he exactly wanted to do. As Disoblige pointed out the custom work was probably quite a bit for this, as it takes someone realll special to want what was done. So naturally the price would reflect him having to come up with a system to make this idea work and then tack on profit for having to go through it all.

The only one who gets screwed over here is clearly Ravi as this whole CC mess is now on his plate and short on the invoice. Last I checked in life you couldn't just short someone because you feel like you overpaid or they are making too much out of your situation. I'm definitely surprised to see that response from you. Could you imagine when you were doing design work for OnG or even now out in Van if someone after was like damn that guy fleeced us a bit with his rates/estimation... well fuck him lets not pay half and he should learn next time?

I mean when somebody comes into your shop with a C63 AMG, exactly how high are you going to set the price over and above what would be considered fair to try and discourage him from a custom job?
Pretty sure when guy realized he couldn't deliver enough pizzas to pay off his credit card bill, he figured the easiest thing to do was to do a charge back for 1 of the 4 cards he used

Seth1968
07-31-2017, 02:02 PM
I am just going on what is in that post by Ravi... it appears he tried to convince the guy it was a dumb idea, and then he decided to quote him a price that was so high that he would think otherwise, then when that failed, he did the work anyway. Are you guys interpreting something else out of that post?

I'm not.

When I read that post, I thought the same thing.

I had a bunch of contractors try and screw me last year, so I am particularity ticked off at the practice right now

I would book an appointment with them, make sure I was home and often plan my whole day around it... they would come, spend an hour preparing a quote with me, and then give me a price that would be out of this world with a big shit eating grin on their face. When I would do a double take and ask them how they got to the price. They wouldn't really have good reason, then get all awkward and say something along the lines of "Well, we are pretty busy, and we didn't think you know any better, so well you know... it is a lot of extra money for us!"

Either that or they would eventually admit the job would be too small, or slightly off-scope from what they normally do, etc...

What pisses me off is I would spend the time to e-mail them scope, photos, design, whatever is needed.. and then they would still come and waste my mother fucking time, of which I had very little of to spare, with this bull shit deceitful attempt to extort money from me unfairly.

I can't stand people who jack up prices of work they don't want hoping for an off chance of a windfall, it strikes a nerve with me

While I totally see what you are saying this is what happens a lot in the contracting/consulting world and I don't see it being any different with a shop. If you really don't want to do something or are busy enough you can't fit it in without a significant effort you price it high enough to make it worth your time. If they will still pay that's on them. End of story

Best to always charge the same rate, regardless of how hot the market is.

People that do that are assholes, straight up. I will tell you why

1) For the reasons I've already stated, taking advantage of somebody who isn't knowledgeable is just a shitty thing to do. When you are the professional and you are dealing with clients/customers that maybe don't know how much they should be paying, you should have a defined charge out rate that can be explained. It shouldn't change just because you think you can extract more money from somebody. Some people justify it by calling it business as usual, but I've dealt with an overwhelming majority of honest and fair people in Calgary to know that just isn't true. It is shitty people that do this.

2) If you do manage to hire such a person for a fair rate, and they manage to find somebody else to take advantage of, they will have no concerns about bumping your schedule and possibly even totally fuck you over for the work

I steer clear of anybody that exhibits these kind of traits in business, they are the kind of people that will burn you the second they get a chance

I don't disagree with either of those things. But that's different than someone jacking their rates 'cause they're super busy, which is the part I was referring to. I agree that any reasonable business should not take advantage of an uneducated customer.

SP even though at one point in my life I agreed with trying to be fair and honest in every thing that I did, I found it really hurt my bottom line. Do I do work for people I don't like? Weekly. Why? Cause their money looks better in my pocket. And having more knowledge in setting prices in a retail situation has taught me a few things. Like dick tax. If your a dick to me, you pay more. Why? Because I treat all my customers with the same respect. When you stop respecting me I increase my prices because there has to be some motivation for me to do the work. The tax can be as little as $20 or as much as a couple hundred depending on the situation. But as you move forward and gain business you can slowly weed out the unworthy people and have a client base that is great.

Yea Im a contractor and I absolutely quote/charge more for eccentric/tough/dick clients - same with jobs I don't really want to touch.
Its a free market generally speaking, which works well by its own, and thus the client has the option of taking their business elsewhere.

SP makes it sound like hes dealing with an industry that has a monopoly on the market. In that case there is the possibility of gouging (eg. highly specialized service).

there are plenty of shops in Calgary that can do exhaust work. just most would either laugh the guy out the door or charge a pretty penny to do it properly. the wiener who owns the benz found the latter; I believe the work is done to a better standard than most exhaust shops would do. regardless of how stupid it is (in my opinion) at least it wasn't done by some schmuck who doesn't know what the hell they are doing.
