We keeping going back to Roku and Zipang, but was wondering if there were any new joints that were of this quality in town? I see a few new places in town, but nothing screams out at me to try them.

Any one got some recommendations for new-ish places?

Am white, but roku and zipang are the best I have had. I do like li-ao for fast and cheap (yet decent quality) now in nolan hill.

Love both Zipang and Roku, I think Roku is ALMOST better in some ways. Worth the drive to get Roku in the rotation for sure.

I have liked Misai on 32nd lately though as a spur of the moment place as its easier to get into than Zipang or Roku. Though the last time i was in there I wasn't impressed with my Sashimi, which is a great way to get turned off of a place. Might have been a one off and need to try there again. Have done the one by Edmonton trail and 16th for skip the dishes and was pretty impressed as well for very reasonable prices, name is escaping me.

I have cut AYCE out of my repertoire all together though, no idea how i ever ate that shit.

Caveat, am white

How's the selection and price? Wa's was great before it changed.

Wa's was my fave place in the City and I would go almost every week. I tried Anzu and thought it was just okay. Maybe it's much better now.

They both pretty good .. as Calgary Standard, there is a sushi place in Okotoks .. pretty good too!

Sadly, most Japanese restaurants in Calgary are going downhill, I guess due to change hand to Chinese owners ... : (

And the fact that everyone want fancy rolls. And the suppliers also slipping in quality, especially salmon which majority are farmed now. They are no where as good as a few years back.

Also, Chinese owner tends to cheap out on the grade to save a buck. These are know for AYCE sushi joints.

Old Wa's was #1 back in the day. I didn't mind spending $80 on myself there, was so good.
Better than Zipang for sure, which was #2.

I tried Matsuya in Cochrane a couple of weeks ago and it was good. The largest assorted sashimi plate you can order was really good and worth it. I'd say this was the most comparable thing I've had to Roku/Zipang in recent memory, but not quite as good.

I'm up for a Roku meet.

Went to Anzu a month or two back. The service was super slow. Every customer there was kinda frustrated. The place was unusually filthy for a Japanese restaurant. It appeared to be run by japanese chef still. I went there before not long after it changed to Anzu from Wa and it was good. I don't know what happened.

CCR at Roku will bankrupt me, I only have 4 tailpipes lol.

Hrm, that doesn't seem like a lot of variety. Most of those are cheap cuts and rolls.

Pretty good considering the menu price of individual sushi there :barf:

I guess this pretty much confirms what I already thought, there's no point going outside these two restaurants. CCR at Roku sounds expensive for the loser....I'm guessing $50 a head would be a safe number lol

not so safe, it would be $50 in Toro sashimi alone LOL. Some of these guys are savages.

One thing I have always liked about Roku/Zipang, is even though it isn't cheap you can still get a good sized meal of sushi in for 70-80 bucks of top quality shit. 100 if you don't want to be able to drive home or order a kilo of Bluefin or something...

Is this Zipang? I had no idea they had a special after 830.

Really miss Vancouver sushi but I guess it's not fair to compare.

Fish quality is good, a lot of their hot dishes are good also. Not Wa's quality but still very good

Was there last week on groupon. You must be white AF to like that stuff.
-The tempura was at least 4 hours old and their batter is bad.
-Fish grade was low
-The only thing good was the beef tataki

I can confirm that I'm white AF. Weird that you had bad tempura, mine has always been fresh.
I was there on a groupon as well. Always draws in us whiteys.

Don't prefer it, I would consider it on the Kinjo level of things, they do offer more diversity than the Kinjo menu.

For me it's

1) Zipang
2) Anzu
3) Roku
4) Shibuya

Beef tataki at koto is great, most of the deluxe rolls are good, sashimi seems alright, expensive for what it is,

Yup I like the diverse menu items at Anzu, admission though is that I don't get up to Riki enough. But it's very good.

For anyone wanting a reasonable experience, go to shibuya, order the salmon belly, shima aji and truffle king mushroom sushi, some of my favorite

I had Hokkaido uni and scallops at sushi bar maumi in Vancouver. That stuff is so good.

I want to go to Hokkaido when I go to Japan.
