Surprisingly, supposedly only a few hundred thousand in Canada are affected - mostly those who have done business with the USA. Without doubt the worst data breach in history, and potentially more damaging than any stock market crash.
Once you cannot verify that a person is indeed the person you think you are, then anyone who claims to be you - can basically take over your credit, which of course in the USA is the lifeblood of the modern economy. I mean seriously, you pretty much have to question the legitimacy of every half million dollar home loan for 143 million US citizens.
Save those nickels.
