Anyone have suggestions for something that we can put into the little tank of African dwarf frogs that might help with keeping the tank clean? Snails or plecos or something? Apparently the frogs aren't very tough, so most things eat them? I dunno.

I had snails with my dwarf frogs and they did just fine.

1 or 2 is the max you want in a 5 gallon tank, assuming there is no other fish and whatnot in there.

Rule of thumb someone told me for cheapo fish like tetras and guppies was one per gallon max. Frogs need that much more space or was the rule of thumb bullshit?

I'm not into this as a hobby, just need something for the kids to kill off cheaply that doesn't trigger my allergies. If the snails will lower the amount of maintenance my wife has to do, it's a good deal.

I think because frogs rely so much on osmotic balance with their skin they are less hardy than most fish.

For FW aquariums I have always heard 1 inch per gallon max ( better rule ). How big are the frogs? I always steered clear of them in my tank.

Also lol at saying maintaining a 5 gallon is too much work...

Eh, for an adult who enjoys the hobby it's hardly any work at all. Really this tank is "owned" by a five year old.

1 or 2 African dwarf frogs can live happily in a 5-gallon aquarium. But if you’re getting more than that, or if they’ll be sharing their aquarium with fish, they’ll need an aquarium of at least 20 gallons.

I really know nothing about keeping pet frogs, but I googled them to see what african dwarf frogs looked like, and this was pretty much the first link i clicked.

at a max size of 3 inches i would say 1-2 is the max as well.

Assuming you're talking about algae on the glass and such, get one nerite snail. Two frogs for a 5 gallon tank as well. A live plant or two in the tank would also compete with the algae and help control some of it.

Algae growth in Calgary is tough, i have the same issue. I think our water supply has a ton of phosphate in it which encourages significant algae growth. But we also have tons of buffered calcium which is good for other things...

This one should do for now. The frogs are probably one inch each. Tiny fuckers.

This. That store has been amazing for as long as I've been going there. I'm guessing I've been hitting up Pisces for fish and reptiles for 25 years. A few furry pets in the mix now and again too.
