Don't think it's been seen before.

My excitement over this car is a bit limited...after all, it's basically a CLS. I think the idea is that the CLS53 will be the top end "mercedes" AMG, and then the real AMG with the bigger motors will be integrated nto the GT sub-brand.

I like to hope this is what I replace the C63 with.

But who knows.

I guess my question is why? Isn't this what the CLA/CLS are supposed to do? I must be out of it because I don't understand the make a four door version of a two door car.

It's not a two door car. It's basically a top-tier CLS, based on the CLS platform. It's not based on the GT platform.

My only hope is that calling it a GT makes it a touch more hardcore than the CLS63 was?

Yea, it’s a marketing exercise to better position a top end CLS against the Panamera.

Fingers crossed.

If people expect it to drive like a GT-S but ended up with a E63S, they will be disappointed.

E63S is a soft porker compared to GT-S.

I think that was the point of moving it over to Mercedes-AMG under the GT nameplate, is that it will be engineered to be more hardcore than the CLS63S which was really just an E63S in a prettier body. The target market that was buying the CLS wouldn't want any less comfort, so they split the CLS into 2 separate segments under 2 separate nameplates. All said and done it should drive somewhere between a GT-S and E63S than exactly like an E63S. It's a hell of a lot heavier and completely different platform than the GT-S, so yea, it will never drive like a GT-S. Of course, we'll see when it actually gets driven and tested.

MB toyed with this idea before by stretching the SLS chassis to make a 4 door SLS, but that idea was tossed due to costs. From a performance standpoint, that would've been the better path for someone that wants a 4 door 4 passenger GT-S.

The hilarious looking 4 door SLS patent:

Yea, looking at the CLS53 to replace my MiL’s 550, but she has no interest in the full AMG treatment with performance seats, harsh ride, crazy shifts.

She just wants something that looks and sounds cool, couldn’t gaf about how fast it is.

Stuff like this is the only hope for hardcore amg’s to survive because the market for soft luxurious amg’s is way bigger than the market for purist sports cars.

So is the wing fixed or is it not?

It’s going to be solidly in refresh territory by the time I am looking, but I kindof agree the cls53 is sharper looking, this is a little monolithic.

Very nice car.

Edit: does that say GT53 on the back?

Busy morning, slowly typing out the details post.

Coming in 3 flavors, GT 53, GT 63, GT 63S. Power output as expected, 429hp, 577hp and 630hp. No word on the 800hp hybrid model.

53 gets standard steel spring with adjustable damping suspension, 63 comes with Airmatic, LSD, rear wheel steering, and drift mode 4matic.

All GT 4 doors have a reinforced chassis, and hefty weight of at least 4500lbs. Optional active aero, not as extensive as the GT R, but still here nonetheless with active front and rear wings.

4 seater setup is nice, the non folding carbon seats are pimp, but destroys usability of the hatch since it's not foldable.

81394

Shameless badly executed ripoff of the Panamera center stack haha.

81395

Standard rear foldable seats makes this actually usable.

Automobile expects the prices to start at around $100k USD, so basically AMG GT 4-door 53 priced in line with an E63S. So $115k CDN start.

I think those oled buttons would look better if they are closer to each other.

With the 53 in there I would assume price starts where CLS63 used to be?

That and the stack not being silver. Maybe it's configurable in different materials.

But yea the spacing is weird for sure.

Is the 53 motor in this just the lower output V8 from the c63, or is it actually the straight 6 “hybrid”.

It's the straight 6 hybrid. A couple first drives have come out reviewing the 53 setup, zero lag. Basically feels like a 429hp big NA V8. I'm excited for it.

Honestly I'm underwhelmed. Styling is subjective, but that's a hot mess. It reminds me of the Panamera launch when it was obvious there were tying to shoe horn 911 styling onto a bigger car. Porsche learned their lesson and moved on. I've never been a fan of droopy-ass styling (CLS/ Audi S7), so I've got a bias.

I won't be in the market for this class of car - but if I was, I'd take the new Panamera shooting-brake thing or even the E63S over this.

rage2
03-06-2018, 11:54 AM
Yea, my bias swings the other way. Love the 4 door coupe "droopy ass" look. A7/S7/RS7 is my favorite look of them all, GT 4 door might be my new favorite from pics so far.

It’s all going to depend how it drives. I am hoping for something special.

It needs to be much better than the E63S to make sense. Or at least a ton harder, e63s black series kind of concept.

I need some crazy to give up rwd.

Buster

At least one of the trim levels comes with the 4matic that can be converted to RWD.

2. 63 is optional, 63S is standard.

E63S had this anyways.

I'm like the guy that got sick off old butter chicken and now "hates curry".

As a child of the 70's (getting into cars in the 80s/90s) I had an overwhelming aversion/reaction to two of the worst automotive designs in history, the J30 and the CL. Since these were some of the original droopy-butt cars, I've just retained that aversion regardless of the actual vehicle.

Rear headroom is key for this style, if it’s too low then it might as wel be a 2 door (e coupe).

I felt I was too tall for the back of the second gen cls, for example and I am not a tall guy.

Buster

ya. It's amazing how much crossover MB has. They have refined their market segments to be quite granular. E coupe, S coupe, this thing, etc.

I like the style! Would have been nice if they flared the back like they did on the previous gen CLS63.

I'm sitting here wondering, if I were to get rid of mine, would I upgrade to that, or just move on to the AMG GT-R :)

In 2 years of ownership, I've had someone sit in the back on 2 occasions... Only other time using the back was when I was moving a bunch of stuff to Vancouver. lol

I mean look at that illustration.

Also: if I had to change careers it would be to "Patent Filing Illustrator". I bet those guys get a pretty penny to do their crayon drawings. Always hilarious.

Edit: I saw a Model X driving down the road yesterday, and it always enrages me more than most Teslas do.

Those are the monoblocks. The dealers in the GT forum said they will refuse to order a car with monoblocks for stock, and will only order them for a customer with a non-refundable deposit. haha.

Everyone is diluting their drivetrains right now.

How much are people spending on Caymans and Boxsters with 4-bangers in them?

I just don't care about brands, so they can make whatever they want and call it an AMG for all I care.
