Well after the positive response in another thread here we go! I suck at writing this stuff so excuse me if im all over the place!

This all started with the wife coming home and bitching about brown lettuce and then throwing half of it out. I was already doing research on hydroponics, and then i seen spikers post up 2 of his setups, well thats all i needed to see and off to best buy to pickup the click and grow system for $99. Get it home and start unboxing it only to see how simple it actually was. Well for that price i could pick up 2 grow lights for the same price, so package it all up and return it to best buy!

I found a guy on youtube (grow indoors 365) that i ended up just glued to his videos for a couple days, figured out that he and alot of people were doing whats called the Kratky Method. Its simple, cheap, and super easy! So onto amazon to spend some monies! Picked up 2 grow lights, $50 a piece with great reviews, and then a bunch of the small things... Heres the first couple days.

Heres a list and links of the products im using

Our last house we had a bunch and i ended up throwing out a bunch of plants until they were gone, i was so frustrated as i tried everything! We then moved about a year ago, and havent really had an issue. Now If i find one, instead of killing it i follow him to see which plant hes in, take that plant to the basement where i have a cardboard box (Old shop vac size box), throw the plant in there with a bit of Dr Doom spray, leave plant for an hour or two and BOOM, all gone.

Were looking at upgarding houses soon, gonna be funny when we get showings and they go to the basment to see this! ill probably either just leave the tent door open or write a "its just lettuce" note on it haha.

Couple questions I keep getting asked...

Q. Any issues with humidity or mold?

Nope. It's a small area and super easy to control humidity, all I did was throw a clip on fan in the top corner aiming down and then slightly open a couple of the vents until I got it where I wanted. 60-75% humidity. Temps run between 19-22.

Q. How long can I leave it without having to maintain it

This was a huge thing for me as we spend lots of time at the lake during the summer. You can leave this setup for at least 2 weeks at a time without opening the door. I've rigged up my smart home to control the lights and threw an ecobee sensor in there so I can monitor everything off my phone. Fancy pants!!

According to this website http://www.weedist.com/2012/11/long-term-costs-of-grow-lights/

That 300W led mars light alone would be approximately $80 a year if running 12 hours a day at a cost of 6c Kwh.

So if you have 4 of those the cost would be approx $27 a month.

We run 16/8 light cycles. So off that math I'm gonna guestimate were under $20 bucks a month for everything.

Very cool and while I assume the lettuce would taste way better than what is in the store, have you tried to figure out how much it costs you to grow a 99 cent head of lettuce? I assume you don't do it to save money, but I am curious. :)

I get asked this question the most, well actually its people making a comment about how its not worth it, and while they're making the comment they're smoking a pack of cigarettes, drinking beer and eating out every second day, so im the one laughing... lol.

Anywhoo, quick math says im around $750 and i dont have to buy anything else for at least 6 months. One tub grows 6 plants, 4 tubs X 6 plants = 24 plants, lets say i can grow them in a month and a half (I know i can get it closer to a month), So ill have 4 yields in 6 months, 4 X 24 = 96 plants in 6 months. Divided by $750 = $8ish per plant for the first 6 months. $4ish per plant over the first year not including the power bill....

So what other plants are ideal for this setup? I wonder if it would work well with things like kale that is more expensive. Be good if you could grow baby bokchoy or something useful like that.

Guess i didn't add what was in each tub!

Tub 1 - 1x cucumber, 1x lettuce, 2x kale, 2x prizehead lettuce

Tub 2 - Lettuce

Tub 3 - Prizehead lettuce

Tub 4 - 3x butter crunch lettuce, 1x kale, 1x oregano, 1x swiss chard

Seeds planted today - 6x Organic non GMO romaine lettuce

***Today is day 40 from the start of the entire setup

How are your cucumber plants going, be interested to see where the cucumbers are going to grow as those plants get pretty big. I grew zuchinni in my greenhouse last year (similar plant) and the plant took over half of a 5 x 2 squarefoot garden.

B.Spilner
05-10-2018, 01:18 PM
Ill start gettin crazy at the end of summer once our outdoor garden shuts down. Were planting zero leafy greens outside this year, only carrots, tomatoes, peas, cucumbers,4x4ft strawberry patch and a watermelon i think? Really opens up the garden when you dont have a bunch of lettuce....

Ill be trying cherry tomatoes in the tent for sure, and pretty much whatever else catches my eye for seeds... I really feel like im running out of room already!

- - - Updated - - -

So far so good, im not sure if i need pollination since its a flowering plant? i know one guy tried watermelon indoors but he couldn't get it to pollinate.

Our cucumber plant in the tent is doing better then the cuc plant on our window sill, Both were planted on the same day.

So you're not really saving any money, it's really a hobby that you get to enjoy in more ways than one. It's like buying a fishing license and all the gear to go out and catch fish to eat - those will be expensive fish for most people especially if one adds in all the real costs of going fishing.

Going great and yea absolutley worth the time and money.

I actually asked the wife a couple days ago if she was still on board with the initial lump sum vs what we've been getting and yep, now that she can see what come out of it she totally on board.

As for the tent, bought a fancy ph digital meter since my $20 amazon meter was completely whacked from actual readings. Finally know when to plant seedlings so no tub is ever empty for more then a few days.

Not much else, been busy so haven't been experimenting as much as I'd like, but with minimal time you can see the thing just pumps out greens.

Small update, trying out strawberries and now the 5g pail is a tomato plant.

Small tip for anyone that's planning on running a setup like this, check PH at least twice a week. Letting it go above 7ph even for a few days can really stunt the plant pr cause burn. Once I figure this out my plants have zero issues.

The Mars Hydro style of LED light really sucks compared to newer tech. One huge advantage of LED is the ability to spread the light sources out which the Mars Hydro style fails to do. It's also using a very old LED style. You can get super geeky and build your own light for a little more then the Mars hydro lights and get both a better light spectrum as well as a high light output. There are a couple of ways to go .you can use LED COBs which lets you spread the light better then the single style or you can go to LED strips which allows you to spread the light even more. Also as a note the Mars Hydro style lights try and do an equivalent to HPS lights so it's trying to say it's 300 watts when it only draws 130 ish watts from the wall. If you want to do some DIY there are a couple of good youtube channels to check out.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC65Wtjuej_YyOOxg4PC-uhA Everest Fernandez, He does a bunch of different hydro styles and uses different types of lights. All non devils lettuce
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPSwmwj8ZLXObtBJmz-76rw Growmau5 good for DIY LED setups he has a good series which if you follow will allow you to build your own light.

Hydro is so simple & easy, and I'm coming from old school when 1kW metal halide lights were about $1,000... If LED can pump out suitable wavelengths, people should be growing pounds of weed.
This thread rules for a closet veggie/herb fun project! OP should experiment more with varying fertilizers from grow phase to bloom phase. General Hydroponics used to make excellent fert and systems that'd work great for this.

Hydroponics too tough in this climate, a month of cold weather and you will get sheets of ice on the windows if you forget to keep it enclosed.

Finally setup the tent last week, and glad we did since I'll be able to trade fresh heads of lettuce for toilet paper!

And this is after a week of planting seeds. This tub has 2 different kinds of Simpson lettuce. Also In the buckets are strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers, but these take a bit longer to germinate. I'll update the progress weekly to show how quick it grows compared to outdoors.

Very cool. My wife has some herbs and peppers going in the two aerogardens spikerS gave me.

My herbs are out growing their aero garden home... I’m filling the damn thing twice a day, my basil is flowering for some reason... is it common to just move them out to dirt pots now? Trimming them is wasteful as they don’t last long in the fridge

The problem with those aerogardens is exactly that, they are just too small. I'd switch to Mason jars and just leave them in the window sill and you'll get better results. And pinch those flowers off, it will help the plant grow better in the edible areas.

As in just filled with water? Probably want to add food still? Like half a cap? Less?

Yep just water and whatever food you have, you will just have to do the math on how much to put in vs water amount. Also cover the outside of the Mason jar with tinfoil or something to block the light so the algae doesn't take off and eat your nutrients.

Went to the hydro store a couple days ago and they said it's the busiest they've ever been! Picked up a jug of nutrients and rockwool cubes, about $80 for both. I have enough supply's to grow everything for the rest of the year if not longer.

Here's week 2 of the tomato plant/bucket and 6 lettuce plants.

Cucumbers, peppers and strawberries havent sprouted yet. Also planting 6 spinach (they take a lot longer then lettuce) and 6 more lettuce today.

Nice, I’ve been wanting to try breeding but I’ve been insanely lucky and have never had a male to get pollen from lol. Gonna grow a few outdoors this summer and hopefully will get at least one male to collect some.

I havent done any research on the 'erbs, any idea what caused it? Too much nutrients or missing something?

Looking really good! Lots of crystals! Let's see these setups!

You guys running any carbon filters? I remember growing erbs back in the day in my parents apartment closet, came home one day and could smell the weed in the apartment hallway. Had to red alert that shit out of the house immediately haha

Male actually was a coffee pheno, I was super dissappointed... but good reason to cross back.

Each plant is different - this one's a sensitive forest creature...

Yup I’m running this one:
VIVOSUN 6 Inch Air Carbon Filter... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01731MLFK

Without it my entire house would reek haha.

I’ll try and snap some more pics later tonight when I check on them.

Have you guys noticed an increase in bugs on your plants or inside the house?

UV into a carbon filter recirculating, minimal air turnover, running a piezoelectric HVAC heating/cooling system.

Wouldn't work on a big system - but works for my little world :)

I have about 40 house plants, plus the stuff in the tent. No issues with bugs, but all my plants are cleaned (dead leaves taken off) on a weekly basis.

I think half the reason I enjoy doing it so much, is just getting to see the setups people are doing. So much cool shit out there nowadays.

Not much off the shelf right now like mine.

Having lots of fun managing VPD without massive turnover of outside air... May end up having to add a bit of CO2 to keep things in the ballpark.

As far as bugs, decade ago when I was trying to keep the ex within budget, struggled with fungus gnats and fruit flies.

So far sterile environment, I do have ionizer/ozone generator in the cabinet, and sensor that'll detect o3 concentration. In theory I should be able to flood the chamber and kill bugs... Haven't tested that functionality yet, science says it'll work.

Shit, I had no idea Beyonders were getting into this. I started to dabble earlier this year, and it's been quite the learning experience but I'm hoping for some decent results. Growing Carolina Reaper and Bhut Jolokia peppers.

Irrigation arrangement I cooked up on the weekend. I kept fucking up the watering while trying to do it by hand...

So seed run, luckily I was just looking at this particular grow mostly for extract. Gotta sit down and cruise forums and learn a bit on making my own vape juice...

Snapped this pic yesterday. She’s 5 weeks into flower but this is a long finisher and might take to 11 or 12 weeks. Purple fade is starting:

Sure.

The pump is this: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/ridgid-replacement-submersible-water-pump-for-tile-saws/1000668683 (the hose barb is actually screwed into an NPT thread on the top of the pump)

The manifold is this: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/orbit-dripmaster-apollo-8-manifold-cd/1000404812

And then just a short length of plastic pipe in the middle to bring the manifold up to a good height. From there, each line goes off to a dripper placed beside each plant, and the manifold has individual flow adjustments so you can make sure each plant gets the right amount of water. I'm still fine tuning it (and peppers don't need a ton of water anyway), but right now I have it running for like 2 minutes every other day. So far that seems to be pretty close to the ideal amount.

What's in the back left? Back left is "savoury" herb. I have my doubts that a botanist would call it that, but hey, what the fuck do I know? The big one is Basil, it's a beast. We've already trimmed it hard.

yeah, Basil basically becomes a weed in the aerogarden. Trim it down all you want, it just comes back, and quickly too.

+1 Aerogarden basil is ridiculous.
Another crazy one is Dill. I was bringing it to work for people in ziploc bags and leaving it on their desks. This was the before-legal days. Hilarity.

Another easy fast grower is green onions. Buy some from store, cut all the root bases off and throw them in water. Couple days and you will see new life, plus so much more taste then store bought.
