I like this trade for CGY
Ferland being included kinda surprise.

"Can't remember who, but they mention that D.Hamilton didn't fit in locker room, and may have some attitude problems"
Was that the reason we give up Dougie? (was expecting Brodie to gone!)

I think this trade could work out to be pretty even or better for us in the long run.

Hamilton was by far the better defenceman, but some are speculating Hanifan isn't that far behind. This also allows us to reunite Brodano.
Ferland is great when he's on his game, but can be pretty streaky. Plus he's UFA after this season and would want more money.
Fox wasn't gonna sign with us so he was a throw in.

asp integra

I don't mind this trade. Dougie registers a -1 out of 10 on the 'give-a-crap' meter and you never know what you are going to get with Ferland. I don't like giving up on Fox, but i get the feeling he wasn't going to sign with the Flames in the end anyways.

We will now have the #5 and #6 picks from the 2013 draft playing on the top line together, and the #5 pick from the 2015 draft playing with Hammer on the 2nd D pairing.

The more I think about it, the more I like the trade

Didn't like it at first but now am more positive about it. Must be some issue with Dougie plus for a guy his size to play soft fan often would pick on him. Hanifin and Lindholm are high draft picks that are improving. Hope they can continue to grow, mature and be part of the core for this team. Let see what it will cost to resign them.

Ferland can be a beast but with concussion issue he seemed to have toned it down a bit. Calgary is soft though even with him.

btimbit
06-24-2018, 03:19 AM
Normally I'd dismiss the things said about Dougie as fans and the media making a player sound bad to make themselves happier about losing him. But considering we were hearing the same things out of Boston the first time he got traded I think there's something too it.

Ferland I really love but it was pretty obvious he would get moved. UFA next year and going to get paid based on inflated point totals from playing top line minutes, that's how you get contracts like Brouwers. Still sad to see him go though, streaky as hell but when he was on he was a treat to watch.

We added two good players as well. No reason not the think Hanifin can be as good as Hamilton offensively while being a bit better in his own end. Lindholm should put up better numbers on that top line while being a good 2 way player.

Don’t mind Douggie hitting the road, but Ferkland I would have like to see here for a few more seasons. Albeit expensive ones if CGY wanted to keep him.

Just my opinion. He was fun to watch when he was on his game.

bigbadboss101

I do think Bennett will improve greatly under a new coach and right linemates. Building confidence early this year will be important.

btimbit
06-24-2018, 12:16 PM
Soooooooo... does this mean we are staying the course with Bennett?

Have to think it's a make or break year for him. Peters said he's going to give him more opportunity so if he can't run with it in a contract year you have to think they'll be moving on

Quizzes
06-25-2018, 01:11 PM
Bennett looks like he was hindered by Gulutzan's system and just didn't have the hockey IQ to excel at being a center. Hopefully Peters can fine tune his game and let him play the way he wants to play... as a winger. Just give up any hope of him being a good center in the NHL.

I was upset at the trade when it was first announced, but have cooled off a bit. Hanifin will probably never replace Dougie's offense, but his defensive game, give-a-crap meter and taking boneheaded penalties will be an upgrade. Didn't really understand why we picked up two RFAs when we had Dougie under contract for a good cap hit for a few more years. Hopefully the two new guys don't cost too much. The fear I have is giving them long term contracts without even seeing them play a game for the Flames yet.

Ferland to me is basically a smaller but slightly faster Oilers era Lucic. Plays well with top line, invisible anywhere else, but on a nice value contract. We’re still remembering Ferland as he was in the Vancouver playoff series, but that ship has sailed imo and he’s topped out where he is. Regardless, he’s UFA next year, and I feel like he’s going to have a big ask thanks to his numbers this year, and become an anchor contract like Lucic’s contract today.

It’s funny, before he spent a lot of time on the top line, I felt like he would be the magic sauce for Mony and Johnny and be epic, but he proved me wrong with just average play. Not sad to see him go. Maybe oilers will give him a $6x7 next year.

Flames could look at guys like Smith-Pelley and Ryan Reeves as possible 4th line guys that would fill that role of checker, fighter, protector as well. Wouldn't mind seeing either of them in a Flames jersey, could probably get them cheaper than what Ferland wants

bigbadboss101
06-26-2018, 05:17 PM
Smith Pelley played quite well for the Caps in the playoffs. Bounced around a bit from teams to teams. Reaves is actually not a bad player. Years back when there were big heavyweights he was not as effective. Now that tough guys have to be able to play he showed he can play on the 4th line. He is also one of the tougher guys in the league.

Pretty good sum to pay. I assume quite a few teams wanted him including Nashville, LV. Would be a good guy to have if the price is reasonable. Team overall is still on the small, non gritty side.

I hated Maroon when we was with Anaheim and Edmonton but the guy has pretty good hands for a big guy and protects his teammates. Would out of Edmonton is that he is slow. Now as slow as Lucic though.

Gotta give kudos to Brad Treliving for completely revamping this roster with a big trade and a few key signings, not to mention a new coaching staff. I love it!
Lineup predictions time!

Gaudreau - Monahan - Neal
Tkachuk - Backlund - Lindholm
Bennett - Jankowski - Czarnik
Frolik - Ryan - Brouwer/Foo/Hathaway/Lazar

Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kulak/Kylington - Andersson/Stone

He's certainly given it his all. Hes definitely done a good job of taking the teams biggest weakness and turning it into a position of strength. Will it be enough though, especially if Smith gets injured again. Team pretty much needs to make the second round of the playoffs to save his job imo

I 100% agree. I think these moves make that much more plausible. Goal tending is definitely still the question mark here.

This franchise has fooled me many times over the past 10+ seasons with new/revamped rosters that are better then previous seasons on paper.

So much improved that we had "the best defensive depth in the league" twice and how did that turn out both times? Now people are saying the Flames have the best forward depth in the division/conference? hahhahah!

Until they start winning consistently they are a middling team that will win some and lose many. Not fooling me again in the summer prior to a new season.

Ditto. Too many factors to really detirmine where a team will end up based on the preseason rankings, trades, signings etc.

Vegas is the best example, ranked dead last going into last season. Ends up winning the division and going all the way to the cup final.

In our division, I could see that... conference, highly doubt it

But that still doesn't translate to anything if the players don't mesh or take forever to hit their stride

beyond_ban

While possible he would play 1 more game, i give it about a .0001% chance (maybe less). Generally jerseys are not retired immediately either, ceremony may not happen until the 2019 season or later. Also, Iggy will be fully retired and not a part of that stupid "Forever a Flame" thing that honours Joe Nieuwendyk and Al MacInnis without actually retiring their numbers.

colinxx235
07-27-2018, 12:06 PM
Also agree that it is highly unlikely he would play 1 game, too much of a distraction for a team that just had a big reshuffle all over. As much as I love Iggy and still rock the jersey.

By hang him in the rafters I also meant retiring, not a forever flame shit. I don't think it would be too hard to get a ceremony for the home opener but that is just me.

Would have been nice for Gilles to show better than that, but I'll reserve judgement on him, since that's an awful situation for a goalie. Bad travel, one practice, bad ice etc.

Not sure if he woukd ha e been third or fourth on the Flames depth chart. Fair to say that performance didn't move him up any, but not sure it moved him down either.

Anyone know what the Chinese TV audience would ha e been? That's the point of all this right? Growing the market for NHL on Chinese TV.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt a bit what with the travel, one practice, and iirc his first game ever on the big international ice. That said though my complaints about him from years ago remain and that's that he plays so deep and small in his net for such a big guy. Challenge a bit more and those two high blocker shots probably get saved rather easily
