Should probably make a thread for this now since it's going to get interesting.

Picked up this 86 Mustang GT 5spd about 3 weeks ago. Plan is to spray it this summer and turbo it for next summer. Yes I am aware of the shortcomings of the 302 and the T5 that's bolted to it.

Did I mention it's sparkly as fuck? Someone, at some point, bombed the whole thing with a shit ton of rainbow flake clear. Like masked the windows and sprayed the body, the trim, the wiper arms, everything. It's been like this at least 10 years since that's how long the previous owner had it. No plans to change that.

The first two weeks I spent making it less terrible. Here's what I've done so far:
New water pump so you don't have to fill it with 8L of water every time to drive it. It PISSED water.
New door handles so you can get into it without having to pop the hatch and pull a string attached to the inside handle.
Adjusted throttle cable so it has 100% throttle with the pedal down instead of 30%. Actually kinda quick now.
Set ignition timing, it was missing a couple degrees of advance. Bit more power.
AC Delete and Airpump delete because they were whiny and annoying me. Compressor wasn't hooked up anyway.
Welded in H pipe because I hate the sound of "true duals".
Put on some less shitty tires. Still pretty shitty, but not potentially explode on highway shitty.
Replace brake master cylinder, because brakes are good.
Replaced plugs with one step colder in preparation for nitrous.

This week I did about half of the nitrous install. Made a tube, installed a fogger in it, installed solenoids. I made a plastic plate with a conspicuous red button for spraying, wired into the fog light switch under the dash for arming.

Taking it to a no prep strip next weekend. My guess is 15.5@90mph aspirated and 14.1@99mph with a 100 shot. If the tires weren't so shit it'd be easy 13s on spray. We'll see.

5L mustangs, even glittered to fuck and having lots of issues, are worth their weight in gold. Really, anything rwd with a v8 nowadays is worth cash, and this car looks quite rust free.

This is an exciting project, I'll be following along. Sentry always does fun things with his rides :)

That paint sure is thparkly!!

Do you want to borrow some worn 275 Radial Pros? They should fit the car without issue on a 10 hole wheel. I also have a couple of 10 holes you can borrow. They currently have junk tires on them but I’m sure you can do a quick tire swap at work...if not, I could mount/balance them at my neighbors shop.

Then you could throw all of the nitrous at it right off the line.

We have regularly put a 150 shot to stock 302s without any issues...window switch usually set for 3000-5000 or so. As long as you’re not greedy with timing and run good fuel, should be all good!

Yeah Ive got jets up to 125, probably just gonna run 100 because I haven't yet encountered a car that won't take that. Also from 2000 rpm because I like to party.

Also thanks for the offer on the 10 holes, one of my fetishes is fat tires on 10 holes, but I won't get serious about traction til it's boosted.

But dammit, you’ll be able to dump the clutch with a shot on sticky tires!! With exhaust, gears, other minor mods along with the 150 shot, we had Foxes running 11.50s. You can’t pass that up!!

Good call on the air pump delete. Should save a few pounds there. I had a 5.0 where the thermoactor pipe or whatever it was called that delivered the air to the back of the heads rotted out and was leaking exhaust into the cabin. Fun times!

310cad shipped for turbo, 440cad shipped for hotside. I'll probably weld a tube inside that flex because I've seen a lot of them collapse.

Edit: 66mm inducer on the compressor. Should be a good match to a stock 302.

Man that thing was sweet.

More parts rolling in. Planning a top end refresh, headgaskets, arp bolts, valve seals. Valve springs if I stumble upon a couple hundred bucks, but I'm trying to keep this project cheap.
https://i.imgur.com/ET2ysOu.jpg

Got a pair of ebay gates. May only use one. Also probably won't have a blowoff valve, or might use one of the used ones I have lying around.
https://i.imgur.com/wFx8Ipt.jpg

I have like 6 intercoolers in my basement but none were the perfect size and configuration for the mustang project, so I just got an ebay one for like $120 shipped. Using the 36lb/hr injectors I pulled out of the M5 last month, also the stock M5 fuel pump (proven good for 450whp boosted v8). Last but certainly not least, a plug and play microsquirt setup from EFISource. Standalone PNP ECU for 650 bucks shipped. :D May not be the most feature laden ECU but it's enough for this project.
https://i.imgur.com/ECEccYe.jpg

The stock ECUs in these cars are tunable but I would have had to buy a couple hundred bucks worth of shit from moates.net anyway, and the software and hardware are ancient. Microsquirts are at least from this decade.

The only cheap thing about a Coyote swap is the engine itself. My buddy/old coworker put one into a Fairmont because he got an F150 engine for 500 bucks... And then got a haltech, harness, mounts, exhaust, headers, etc. and is into it for more like 8 grand. And that's with cheaping out on the trans, he got a T45 or something I think.

I'm gonna race him when this is done and see if shitbox boost is quicker than technology. :D

350-400whp. 36lb injectors will be the limiting factor. Also about all I want to put through stock trans.

EDIT: These injectors made 450whp in the M5, but that car runs 70psi base pressure. So jacking up fuel pressure is an option too if I feel I want a little more power. Mustang runs 43.5psi base.

Drive through the pan. No shavings from drilling to clean up, don't have to take the pan off. A deer slug might achieve the same effect but you'd have to fish it out after. ;)

Nice info on the Goulds! Too bad they jump from 4” to 6” on the website. I requested the catalog but do they have a variety of bends? I’m getting tired of the big exhaust without a muffler dumped in front of the passenger tire so I was going to build something to the back.

Yeah they have a bunch of stuff, both unpolished and polished. Their polished stuff is food grade sanitary, it's what real welders (aka not me) build breweries and shit out of lol. Makes for pretty exhausts.

Do you guys Mig or Tig the exhaust? Sorry for the hijack :D

I tig everything. I bought my TIG 5 years ago and took the SAIT TIG night course, have gotten pretty damn good over the years. The sooner you start the sooner you'll get good.

EDIT: Here was a downpipe I was in the middle of building for a subaru about a month ago

Does the front Ford emblem say Fuck? Hahahaha

I'd put a Ford 'Mandella Effect' logo on it, just to fuck with people.

Yeah I put that sticker on about 2 months ago. It's a Fucksbody. :D

Strapped it to the dyno today, it made 350whp 420ftlbs at 13psi with my conservative street tune. Gain of 160whp 160ftlbs over stock.

If the bench racer math works out, it should trap between 110-115mph in the quarter

That's a solid power gain!

Nearly doubled stock horsepower. Cam and heads would put it over 400whp for sure, but I'm capping this project at 3 grand.

Got some bigger rotors and calipers, hawk pads, and spindles off a dude with an 88GT that switched to 5lug. This pile stops way better now.

Also replaced the shocks in the rear, car feels way better. The ground gives better traction than air.

Fuck it, ordered front struts too and changed them.

Also picked up some 87-93 tails for 30 bucks. I like the 85/86 tails better but mine were too busted up.

And tonight I relocated my IAT sensor. The stock Ford sensor responds slowly and is in a real shitty spot prone to heatsoak, giving falsely hot IATs.

Added in a fast responding GM sensor in the charge pipe where it belongs.

Have the launch dialed in nice and consistent on street tires. Not hoping for miracles but a 1.9 60ft would be nice on these tires. I mounted up my slicks also, but weather fucked me this last weekend so didn't get to race.

Also cranked out a ghetto cupholder. Going to daily this all summer, need my morning coffee more secure.

Oh, what are you running for a diff? Stock 8.8?

Sentry
05-06-2019, 10:20 PM
Yeah stock 8.8 with a worn out traklok and awful stock 2.87s.

It could use some 3.27s or 3.31s.

I have an extra 8.8 with some 3.73s if you really want to blow the tires off!

If you snap axles with the slicks, I think I have at least 4-6 extras if you want them. I may have an extra t-lok too...can always just do the super cheap repack with extra frictions to tighten things up a bit.

Took the glitter bomb to a no prep asphalt strip today, got 3 runs in. Stock gears kinda worked, was just tagging limiter in third as I went through the beams. Shit 60ft though, these tires went 1.73 in the M5 which weighs 1000lbs more, but that was at Castrol with prep.

12.9@97mph (laid over in third, overboost and it pulled timing)
12.78@113mph
12.69@111mph (dropped tire pressure, lost mph but better et)

Yeah it needs gears and a castrol trip. 2.0-1.9 is the best you can hope for there unless you have AWD

Did you happen to catch what the GT350R did mph in the 1/2?

And good runs, traction was tough there. Even awd cars were 1.8

Ekliptix

Nice mph!

For comparison, my 5L did 12.62, at 108, with a 1.72 60'.
That was at 6psi (blower), making 318whp/340tq on a mustang dyno.

I'm guessing you'll be low 12's with a good launch.

Nah the board wasn't working so if you wanted times you had to either hover over James running timing or ask the guy what he ran lol. Sounded nasty though. That white stickshift duster with the vortech blower is still probably my favourite car that comes out to these.
