Just buy whatever you want and install a fuel cell in the hatch/trunk. Otherwise you're looking at a truck. Have fun with that in Vancouver.

My '17 f150 says 1200km to empty but pulls in around 1100.

I've been road tripping from Calgary to Cali in my F30 328i... forgot just how efficient that 2L 4cyl BMW engine was! Especially having spent the last half year daily driving a Macan GTS that is 4000+lbs and gets around 7km/L in the city.

I've been getting between 13-14km/L on a 60L tank with a lead foot and averaging around 130km, 800+km on a car that is decently fun to drive is a win in my books. Not quite 1000km+, but I think if you were to hypermile it (draft behind 18-wheelers the entire time, keep it around 100km)... I think you could get pretty damn close!

Km/L is a pretty nonstandard measurement.

Km/L is a pretty nonstandard measurement.

Hahaha I was thinking the same thing. Took me a while to notice that, I was like it doesn’t take a mathematician to instantly know 13L/100km on a 60L tank won’t get you 800km, then I realized haha

Edit: I used to think L/100km didn’t make sense until I planned a trip once and it made it so easy to figure out cost

Highway? Mix? And at what price? lol

$50 regular, 40L tank, VW golf, mix driving 500kms, pretty sure highway only would push that to 800kms+ :dunno:

i was so confused! especially since the 330xi gets about 7L/100km, no way the smaller engine is THAT much better

My E400 wagon does over 1000km on the highway. Sure is nice getting to family in BC on a single tank.

2018’s are fitted with an 80L tank, prior to that, 66L. It’s rated at 9.5L/100km but I’m always hitting 7.8L. Already have 6000km of road trips on her.

Larger tank is a $100 option out in Europe. Optioned on a E220 4 cylinder diesel it goes over 2000kms on a tank haha.

In Canada and US, not an option, no clue why they threw it in for 2018 and only in the wagon.

Quick peek at 2019 specs, all the sedans and wagons gets the 80L tank. My incoming E coupe only gets the 66L. :(

I’m overseas right now and the VW Golf rental we have is on track to do 600 Miles this tank. It’s not even a diesel either, 1.4L TDi has with a six speed. Probably the best rental car I’ve ever had.

2008 Audi A6 4.2L will go 1000km on a tank. It can also go 300km a tank. Ive been on both ends of those numbers.

That would be pretty freaking sweet... you could pretty much drive to BC and back without ever paying BC gas prices, haha
It's not just a gas price thing. Up in the boonies of BC, the fuel quality is terrible. We're by 100 mile house pretty regularly, and the gas there ALWAYS triggers a CEL on my cars for misfires. The ability to fill up in Kamloops and not have to refill for a couple weeks till we're back makes it worthwhile.

The only thing to keep in mind is KM/tank is such an arbitrary figure. Range is also not synonymous with fuel economy. It also is largely dependent on how you drive and how fast you drive. Many vehicles with a massive tank or dual tanks can easily hit 1000km. Trucks that have two switchable tanks come to mind.

Golf TDI's will do 1000-1100km to a pretty cheap tank. I drove 1,800+ km to Colorado in one and that's what we got on all the flat USA freeways. Most economy cars will do around 800-900km/tank with easy highway driving (45-50L tank, 5.5L/100km or so).

Maybe a different question is do you want to do 1000KM/tank for $50 or $150 lol.

Ford F150.

This. My F150 made it to Sicamous and back with some light driving around the area with about 100 or so kms till empty this weekend. It is a 136L tank.

Find a car that'll fit a kiddie pool in the trunk. Do a fuel pump relocate, fill 'er up and you're good to go for 2000KM+. Avoid hills, sudden stops, and smoking in the car.

I'm pretty sure the following cars get over 1000km/tank:
Q7 TDI
A7 TDI
Any BMW diesel (suv or car)

I'll throw another F150 into the ring. I've had the estimator over 1350kms to empty before, but I've rarely driven it in a manner for that entire time to actually hit those numbers. 1100 was pretty easy

Anyway, I still like rage2's suggestion of e400 wagon the best. Better in Vancity than a pickup.

Fixed.

I would imagine the BMW 535d and 328d would do quite well if you were trying and kept your foot out of it. Or alternatively a Cruze diesel should do alright as well.

I like to check this when renting cars.
Dodge Charger 1000km
Dodge Avenger 800km
Ford F150 1300km
This is all highway ranges and what was displayed when I hit the highway with my conservative driving at no more than 10 over the limit unless making a pass so no idea of what the real mileage would of been. And don't know the tank or engine sizes but I'd assume base since these were rentals.

Shit yeah it’s a TSi. My own car is a TDi back home and this one is a TSi. I’m scared to run my diesel low on fuel so the farthest I’ve ever gone is 832km on 40.645L of diesel.

This is true, but 13L/100km in a 1 ton with a mix of city/highway is impressive to say the least. I can easily hit 12 if its all highway. It would be over 1100km in a tank.

That's actually amazingly impressive, I would not have expected that.

Back a few years ago I think the best I ever got was 600 Km  $85 fill.

1000+km range is pretty sweet, especially those cars with the larger fuel tanks. Think of the extra weight and still able to get that range.

Chester
08-28-2018, 03:51 PM
That is really impressive

I thought they have a little under 100L tank, which means you are getting close to 25% better mileage than the EPA rating

93L, I was very surprised. I guess the MDS really works (shuts off half the engine).

I managed 11L/100km to Fernie and back.

They have a huge tank and cylinder deactivation.

EDIT: And if it was like my drives to Fernie, you are stuck behind campers the whole time doing 80-90 Km/h which helps A LOT with mileage compared to 120-130km/h haha.

Have a gen 2 3.5L ecoboost 136L tank and 3.55 rear, fuel gauge has never gone to 1000km to E strictly city driving.
Only time I got it over 1000 km is highway driving.

On first read, I thought you were talking about following campers = drafting and I was going to call BS. If you've ever drafted a Semi or a Greyhound, you need to be extremely close and you basically start thinking if you told your family you love them while doing it.

But yeah I could see doing that speed to be more cost effective.

Thats fair, I have 3.31 gears, and the DTE can get anywhere from 850-950 in the city (which, I mean my routes are alot of feeder roads so more open).

Yeah I topped up in Canmore so I could skip Golden and Revelstoke... the top up in Hope could have also been skipped, but I would have to get fuel in DT Van if I did that.

Is there even a gas station left in downtown Vancouver? I recall a news article last week saying the last is gone or soon will be.

See... under 1000km range is super fucking annoying, lol

You have a bladder of steel. I don't mind lower ranges because it gives me an opportunity to get out of the car, take a leak, etc. And if traveling with passengers (especially whiminz) they usually start getting crabby at the 4 hour mark.

I did Calgary - Vancouver on the July long weekend.

650 - 700km range with my old 5.4 F150 and the 136L tank. Gas light never went on.

Filled up here, then Kamloops, which was the cheapest in Interior BC. In Abottsford on the way back and then Kamloops again. Not sure why with 630km per tank you can't do the same.

Weird, seems a tad low. I consistently get 13L/100km so with a 136 litre tank that would be over 1000. I only have a 120 though :(, I’ve gone 700 and still had almost a 1/4 tank

You have tires on that thing?

Edit: I do have a supercab shortbox with 17” wheels though (I’ve forgotten my gear ratio) so maybe if you’ve got tow oriented gearing and a supercrew that would be why

Haha yea she sure isn’t easy on the gas when I try to move her anywhere fast.

Makes sense I think you’d be a bit heavier than me and with the baller wheels and I think shorter gearing than me that makes sense.

I’m looking to upgrade my wheels but holy hell does the jump to 20s pull a premium on rubber

Yeah, I didn't think about weight. It was an FX4 Luxury. So leather, power heated seats, sunroof, etc. All that shit adds weight and burns fuel.

I've been running a 2018 Expedition Platinum for the last 2-3 weeks. 30 gallon tank, same 3.73 gears, but 10 speed and ecoboost. I think it is lighter than my F150 was. 5700lbs. I think the F150 weighed, empty, at the dump at 6500 lbs. I'm going to do a Sweet Grass run today. Let's see what the LOM (lie-o-meter) tells me for range after 6 hours on the highway.
