I'll be riding this one out in Rock Hill South Carolina

Good thing I moved beyond from Virginia datacenter to Oregon.

I'm just polishing off a humanitarian effort to North Carolina, heading out shortly in a truck full of liquor and condoms.

Does anyone know the price gouging rules down there?

Good thing I moved beyond from Virginia datacenter to Oregon.

The West coast is overdue for a M8.0 quake somewhere along the coastline - could be anywhere along the Cascadia fault (but not the 'big one' at >M9.0, which would rupture the entire fault ) so this could include Oregon coastal area.

Its actually a very risky place to have a datacenter. Realistically, all the nuclear power plants in the area are just two lightning bolts and a ton of water away from going Chernobyl.

There are no nuclear power plants in Oregon.

I'm talking about the coast, its not necessarily that a plant would "explode" but they may have forced shutdown for the duration of a hurricane month.

Which means - power becomes an issue. Can't move data without electricity.

I have an annual golf/drinking trip to Myrtle Beach, SC in a few weeks. We'll see if they've recovered by then. If not, it'll be all drinking, no golfing.

Myrtle is probably still going to be underwater. The storm surge for there is predicted to be 9'. The storm has been down graded to a cat. 2 but there amount of rain and storm surge is going to be incredible. We are 3 hours inland and we'll get 40 mph winds and about 6" of rain.

Meh, the one at Pacific is way bigger and heading toward Shenzhen, where Flames and Bruins are playing this weekend. It's the most powerful storm ever on record.

Isn't that entire coastline like three feet above water? With a nine foot storm surge, thats going to be huge.

Some parts are going to get a 13' storm surge. No beach trips for a minimum of 6 months. I'm spending the day cutting back some of our tress with a chain saw. Having large branches fall on the house is my only concern at this point.

No it's not, storm surge was banned in North Carolina since 2012. This storm is fake news.

Typical MSM, I've seen maybe a total of two articles about mangkhut.

And holy shit, its quite the storm :o

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2018/09/super-typhoon-mangkhut-typhoons-vs-hurricanes/

The super typhoon would be considered a strong Category 5 storm in the Atlantic Ocean, with estimated winds of 157 miles per hour. The storm threatens the heavily populated coasts of Hong Kong and Macau, and has already caused flooding in Guam. It is likely to strengthen in the coming hours and strike the Philippines further along its path.

The only country that matters is the USA. Everywhere else is a shithole and not worth reporting on. Even news outlets like BBC agree.

It's the most powerful typhoon of the year (so far). Not a record breaker yet. It'll be relatively weak by the time it hits HK and Shenzhen. RIP Philippines tho, hope they come out OK. :(

SCMP calls it worst on record. They expect it will be 180mph at Philippines and slow down to 149mph when it hit Macau/HK.

Well they *predict* that it'll be the worst on record. :dunno:

Who knows what will happen, if it'll gain more steam before landfall in Philippines. Once it hits, it's going to weaken. It's the Chinese media, they love predicting doomsday for every fucking big typhoon. Don't get me wrong, not trying to downplay it, but it's not a record breaker based on forecasts so far. If it sweeps north and around Philippines and onto HK, then there's a chance it gets fucking crazy.
