View Full Version : Steelies won't fit over brake calipers - options?

I just found out the annoying way that my winter tires on steelies won't fit on my new Civic because the front brakes are a bit super-sized. It was close, I was able to tighten the first rim on pretty hard before realizing my big oops then took it off right away. Now what? Spacers seem like a viable option but I don't know if that's the right thing to do in the grand scheme. I'm not overly clear on how wheel offset impacts, well, anything so any help you can offer a wheel rookie is appreciated. Non-baller solutions preferred.

OK, somewhere between non-baller and non-ghetto would be ideal.

How close you to clearing? If it's pretty close, a small trim of the calipers isn't that crazy. Or a small wheel spacer isn't going to hurt anything.

you could uses spacers if the studs are long enough, but realistically its probably cheaper to just get new steelies.

Hooray for practical answers, it is close prob by millimeters so spacers seem ideal.

Stud length shouldn't be an issue with these, no?

I can't imagine new steelies costing less in addition to the fact that I have no means/experience to move the tires over to them.

Factoid.

Try a 3-5mm slip on spacer. Hubcentric ideally if they make them.

They do indeed, sounds like the best idea.

What size are the steels?

I see in my catalog you would need at least a 17" rim

Could just get smaller calipers:dunno:

I don't know what is wrong with shaving a bit of the caliper. If you aren't a plug and can steady your hand for 15 seconds, you can do an excellent job, for free. Its possible that a small amount of metal removed will be LESS intrusive than a spacer that needs to move the whole tire.

Tires are 16" so i'm guessing that's where I went wrong going forward, I thought bolt pattern would suffice (noob alert).

I also don't know, that's why I made this thread. TIL that might be great advice so my apologies for not knowing better (and calling non-dicks dicks).

Don't blame the brakes, blame your steelies for not being hellaflush!

Spacer and done. It will bolt up no problem. 3-5mm is nothing.

I came in at 6:00am today just to get some questions answered and emails etc, but I still can't get to them all! lol!

Both options mentioned above are realistic, but not necessarily guaranteed. If it is just barely touching and the brakes are not super nicer painted ones, find the spot they touch the caliper and taken a little off maay be viable if it is safe in that area to do so, but if you can get away with a 3mm spacer, I would personally go that route. Most hondas seem to accept 3mm spacers and still have enough turns of the lug to safely attach the rims but you again will need to try it and confirm. You really want a minimum of 6.5 complete turns of a 12x1.5 lug nut. The ghetto in me would accept 5 turns on my own car but it isn't considered proper so for a customer car, I would not advise that.

Pfffft...I would be happy with THREE full turns on my cars hahahaha....

Surefire way. Clears ALL caliper sizes.

On my last car I ran 5 mm spacers for the 18" wheels to clear the calipers and then I started to notice vibrations at highway speeds.

I would just buy a proper set of wheels that fit and scrap the old steelies.

Sounds like you had shitty spacers that maybe weren't proper for the car? People use spacers all the time with no problems. I had 20mm spacers on my Audi and never had any vibration at all speed.

yeah spacers are necessary to be hubcentric, or the bolt on type that have extra studs, if they just float then it's gonna cause balance issues.

They were hub centric. But yeah definitely possible to be shitty because they were like 40$ or something.
