View Full Version : Adding another 16GB of RAM

Hey fellas, I built a PC earlier this year and everything's running great. I have 16GB of RAM but I kinda wanted to add another 16GB just for shits and giggles.

This is the 16GB I started with:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01HKF59I0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Can you tell me what the difference is between the one I have and the ones below?

https://www.amazon.ca/Corsair-Vengeance-2666MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B0123ZC44Y/

https://www.amazon.ca/Corsair-Vengeance-2666MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B07D1WWBL3

These two are both C16 and 2666mhz, but I don't know much more about RAM and if there are other considerations for compatibility.

You might ask why I don't just get the same one I did before, and the answer is mostly just my curiousity.

Thanks in advance.

ideally you want the same ram, usually from the same batch. if you're doing anything like overclocking, different batches, speeds, etc. can cause instability.

Sell the 16gb and get a 32gb kit

If this is just 'because' - then either would do - if youre not pushing these above anything normal.

Save money and don't get the rgb

Either kit will be fine, these guys are fussy. All those kits have the same specs and should run the same speed under XMP 2.0 if enabled.

Current: 2666MHz 16-18-18-35 1.2V
Kit 1: 2666MHz 16-18-18-35 1.2V
Kit 2: 2666MHz 16-18-18-35 1.2V

16GB is plenty of ram though. Why more? Unless your trying to play Star Citizen haha.

I would double check compatibility with your motherboard. Some boards do funny things when you populate all the slots.

But yea. Rip it and go. IMO spend your money on bigger/ faster SSD. They are the ticket to a computer that 'feels' fast.

Are you running a AMD or Intel system?

Ah thanks alot for the replies.

32GB is overkill for sure, but I frequently have a shitload of tabs open (#moarpornz), not to mention that Chrome is a total hog.

Just wanted to double check on the nuances of the RAM. I'm leaning towards just grabbing another 16GB of my current kit but the RGB cheesy and I like it haha.

Exactly. People on this board have funny opinions about computer performance and hardware requirements (read: fucking overkill for everything).

I ordered this today: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HHL611C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

$189 / 128GB of ram just because.... My guess is they won't ship it.

Whaaaaaa, I ordered. If it ships - bonus haha

EDIT: it's on RFD. Definitely going to get cancelled. Those vultures are probably ordering multiples

There's definitely been a couple of threads where the discussion always goes into future-proofing or it's not much more to get X. That said, if people want a machine that's more than what they use it for that's fine too.

I'm pretty happy with 16GB but just wanted to see what my options were if I were to add more.

PS: When he says fussy, he's talking about the RAM, not people and their build opinions but never a missed opportunity for you to throw some shade, eh? Haha

I've always been fine with 16 until VR came along. Running VR in certain games which are a bit more CPU intensive, 32gb can absolutely make a noticeable difference. I've ran into 3 games in VR where when I upped to 32 (as recommended by many other members in those game communities), I got a noticeable bump in performance - at least in very high detail/action situations in game.

Same! Waiting to see what comes up for Black Friday. Didn’t even need the ram haha.

Got the same, read again, the $200 credit is for that ram at the regular price. It isn’t a general $200 credit.
