Taking a look at a 2013 Acura TL SH AWD tonight. Higher highway kms. Decided I don't want or need a truck at this time with gas prices and parking etc. Can rent one for the odd track day if needed. It ticks all of my boxes on paper. I love my Accord 6-6 but don't like how overpowered it is for fwd on icy roads and also want 4 doors/awd for practicality. What do I need to look out for on a higher mileage SH AWD? J series V6 is pretty bulletproof as long as oil changes were kept up but I've read about oil consumption issues, prop shaft noise and other things. I've never owned an AWD vehicle. Help me out!

I've got an RDX SH-AWD, and I've read it's important to maintain (i.e. change fluid) in the rear diff. I would look for any service records on that.

Either way, it's an 11/10 better car than your accord. Will be a bit slower probably, but then again so is everything else on the road

The main Achilles heel of them was the auto trans, pressure sensors need to be changed semi regularly(I still have some new ones sitting in my garage)(at least I think the 2013 it was still an issue). If you get a 6-speed you'll avoid all that.

Thanks all, I'm going to miss the beast 6-6. It's truly a gem of an engine but this is like the big brother of it. 310 hp vs 278 hp awd vs fwd 5.2 0-60 vs 5.6. Looking forward to slaying all winter in the SH AWD.

I've got a 14' TL SH-AWD but with the auto. The auto transmission drives me nuts which you don't need to deal with but no problems with the rest of the car. Enjoy!

Oil consumption issues. It’s well documented in the J37.

I had a 2010 manual TL, if you want that 5.2 you have to dump the clutch at 5k with traction control off.

It’s actually quite quick for its size. Don’t burn your clutch though, it’s a heavy car.

Reason I sold mine was because hondata didn’t have a flashpro and didn’t plan to make one.

Otherwise I would have built a 400hp NA Honda.

I considered the auto until I read about it being 1 second slower 0-60. That's a deal breaker for me.

Glad you saw this post! I don't plan on modding it beyond maybe an intake/cat back XLR8.

I have a 2010 auto, great car for the price and easy to work on. Did my first timing belt on it and changing fluids is cake. I don’t mind the auto because I’m too lazy to shift. Has good power for the size but nothing spectacular. Big comfy ride.

I've read a few complaints about the firm "sporty" sh awd ride. But I think that's coming from the 45-60 year old target demographic for Acura.

I’d get 8.2-8.4L on the highway and city I DGAF. Honda has the best induction note. You’ll like the car.

I average 8 L on deerfoot daily commute and 10 -11 city in the 6-6. So really, I'm not going to lose much MPG. Just have to run 91 vs 87. Cool! And yes, the j-series scream is addictive.

Forged internals and 7200rpm. Stock manifold and exhaust but skunk2 manifold and short ram intake.

From a stoplight in the winter especially the Super Hardcore AWD would slay the 6-6. No real wheelspin or wheelhop on cold roads. The trouble with the 6-6 is it's an incomplete package. It has an amazing engine/transmission but the handling and ability to handle 278 (underrated hp) with FWD is just not possible for drag racing. I don't know if drag racing was what Honda had in mind when they created that monster but anyhow..

That's right. Specifically, it's commonly used by Accord drivers to refer to their cars. I'm assuming because it takes too long to write "I drive an Accord. But it's not the slow one, it's the V6. Car has 200,000 kms exactly on it. 1 owner, 60 year old white collar bible thumper apparently. Found a pamphlet inside "why does god let us suffer" showing isis, Somalian babies and all that fun stuff. Runs like a top. He sure stayed on top of the maintenance. Even highlighted in the manual for the 5w20 oil recommendation "USE THIS ONE!!" The dealer threw in a 2 year lubrico powertrain warranty at no charge and gave a decent value on the 6-6 for trade in. Shifts so nice. Reminds me of a firmer civic si style shift. Will probably throw a takeda SRI and some konis/1" lowering springs and call it a day. I'm liking how playful it is. You can kick out the tail in a controlled fashion no problem. AWD 6-6 rocks.

The TL feels like a Germanic accord. I've figured out every feature on it already. Not sure how much is carryover but it feels as if Audi/BMW built a 6-6. Nice solid "thunk" when you close the doors compared to 6-6.

I had a 2008 Type-s. It was pretty anemic with the automatic though. It was an alright car, definitely didn't rival German counterparts. I haven't had a chance to drive the newer ones and see how much better they are. I got rid of my 2008 within a month or so, I just didn't enjoy it without the 6-speed.

 like 70%? The thing is that the infamous 6-6 Accord is a 9th generation accord vs the 4th Gen TL is based off of the bigger and heavier 8th generation Accord.

It is quite a lot heavier than the 6-6 but does have a bit more power and SH-AWD does give more traction than just FWD.

I don't know if it's just because it's an Acura, but the doors feel so much more solid. Way less wind noise. And the leather is of much higher quality. Certainly the most luxurious car I've owned to date. The SH-AWD just hooks up and goes with the studded winters. Tiny squawk at launch and it's gone. Worthy upgrade from the 6-6.

The leather is that smooth leather instead of the typical Honda pebbled leather but it isn't as durable in my experience (I have both cars in my stable. Both cars are great but the TL is a pig on gas. The highway milage is even kind of crap... I think it is rated for 8.*/100KM but my last road trip I got 9.8 :(

It's a heavy awd car with a port injection 3.7 V6 so I can't complain but I think I'm averaging around 13 L/100 in the city. It's about the same as my Camaro SS, maybe a little worse due to how short Honda gearing is. Oh well

I have owned my MY2012 6MT since new. It is my wife's car now. The manual TL is a great car and it will be harder to come by as only 5% of the TLs came with the 6-speed manual. It is a heavy car but feels lighter than its actual weight. The dampers are slightly stiffer on the manual cars... that combined with the lighter weight makes a difference to handling between the MT and AT cars.

When I was driving the car, I would be routinely into the high 12 and mid 13 L/100 km if I remember right but then I didn't really care about fuel economy. When my wife drives, she can get it down to 11.X L/100 km. On highway trips, we routinely see mid to high 8 L/100 km.

If I can hit 8 ish highway I'll be happy. It's too fun to hear the vtec crack though. Want to add a takeda SRI. Even a new filter and removing the plastic engine bay covers gives it a little more oomph at full throttle. And I agree, it feels like it's 3-400 lbs lighter thanks to the suspension tuning.

Removing engine bay covers? Never thought of that, I thought one purpose of them is to absorb heat??

^They are plastic and don't have heat shielding. I suspect they are purely aesthetic and partial noise reduction as typical acura buyer likely does not like to hear too much intake note.

Nice pick up, just be careful on the headlights, I have heard they are prone to cracking. My friend has gone through 2 sets of them already and is finally giving up and selling his car. There is a lot about it online.

Instead of doing the exhaust, you should look at doing the J-pipe and the precats. RV6 makes some nice stuff.

What is the TL built on..? i.e how much of the TL is a Accord..?

If it is anything like the 7 Gen Accord V6 and 4 Gen TL, then pretty much most of the car is the same. The J32 is a direct plug and play swap for the J30, also you can use the J35 cranks and rods to stroke the J32 to 3.5L, or even the J37 cranks and rods. The Cam shaft from the 4 Gen TL-S is a direct plug and play into either the J30 or J32 engine (the swap puts down pretty good power, at around 240 hp and 220 ft/lbs at the wheels). You can also swap the suspension bars from the TL-S directly into the Accord, along with swapping air intake manifolds. Even looking at sub frames of both models, they are plug and play, just different materials.

Yeah, funny you should say that as part of the deal was for the dealer to replace the cracked/foggy passenger light. $900 from Acura! I'll look into 3M type film on the headlights/fogs.

RV6 does make some nice stuff. Couldn't bring myself to mod a FWD accord but I feel a little more motivated with this car. Still want to keep it emissions compliant.

triplep
11-14-2018, 03:46 PM
I don't think the 3M film will help with the cracking issue. I think it has to do with our weather and the wild temperature swings we have.

You can always opt for the high flow precats as I know they make them.

Yeah, the last FWD car I owned was a 3.2CL Type-S 6mt. It was great for a FWD, LSD and stuff, but I still won't own another one. Only exception would be a new CTR or if I could find a nice EP3 or Fiesta ST for a beater.

Only time I've been asked to slow down is when I made my wife car sick doing some 'spirited' driving on Westside Road (near Kelowna).

Love that road!! Had the Viper through there one year

Sure, lets see if pics work on this site. I know I can't see anyone elses. When I went through that road it was with the first Viper. 2006 GTS Blue Vert.

Quit granny shifting and not double clutching like you should.

This will definitely be my next car. I just can't seem to fathom the overall size of the vehicle, looks bigger than the new TLX, maybe it's the bulky square lines.

I haven't looked at dimensions, but I was pretty sure the TL IS bigger. The TLX was a blend between the TL and TSX, kind of an in between model.

I can't view the viper pic either. What's up with that beyond.ca?

Every pic shows up as black X's for me on this site. I wasn't sure if it was just my work firewall, or if it's like that for everyone?

Pics of both Vipers are on my Instagram if you want to follow that. It's private though so you have to actually follow to see anything. viktimize

They are a little big but so roomy inside. I'm used to bigger cars though. Very happy with the TL

Well, since it’s rdx, mdx, tlx and some older Honda’s, it’s dark bags under eyes because the 90s kids fanbois grew up and bought these, and all have super young kids. Thinking about an AFE Takeda SRI. I liked the SRI on my 09 Si because it really made the vtec engagement crack. Thoughts? Does it retain the factory ram/cold air from the bumper as long as I keep the resonator?

It might maintain some cold air effect, can you do a full CAI ?

Probably. Just like the roar that you get with a SRI. And the wrinkle black takeda looks so perfect in the engine bay.

I've put about 1500 hard kms on it and oil level hasn't budged - good! Need to adjust the intake/exhaust valves though super clattery at idle. Supposed to be done at 170 - 180 kms and I'm at 200 kms. Looks like a relatively easy DIY with feeler gauges and some common sense.

I had a CAI on my 3.2CL type-s... it sounded great and was plenty loud enough FWIW.

I’d keep stock mufflers and just an intake for the intake noises.

Like you said, you have the loud car already.

You're right. That's why I only added a k&n filter on the 6-6. Honda's are already pretty loud once you open up the intake. I actually forgot about these cars until I spoke to a hot chick at work who has the same one but auto. Forgot that there was a stick shift option! :burnout:

I'm very happy that the synchros and shift action are much smoother. Haven't grinded 2nd shifting at redline unlike the 09 Si. 6-6 also didn't like to shift smooth into 2nd when it was cold. Acura doesn't have this issue.
