So my travel has always either been family vacations that we plan a long way in advance, or work trips where someone else does the booking and paying. I've never worried about this.

I need to take a 1 day trip to Regina in early February, and it's for a consulting job that has a pretty high chance of being cancelled. I could book now, but obviously I'd prefer to wait in case this gets cancelled. Unless the price is likely to change a huge amount, in that case, I'd buy refundable fares now.
Current round trip is $380 for decent flight times on "econo" fares.

You domestic travel experts, what's the smart play here?

If you use google flights, I've typically found that within 14 days prices usually pretty stable, but anything less that 14 days the prices start to climb.

Book a flex fare on AC. A bit more money up front, but if your trip gets cancelled you can rebook free of charge.

WJ has some flex fares too, although they may call it something else. I'm a WJ guy.
