Right after the nice new enhanced crave comes out, netflix jacks up their prices
https://business.financialpost.com/telecom/media/netflix-canada-plans-biggest-price-increase-yet-as-streaming-competition-rises

Basic - $8.99 -> $9.99 +11%
Standard - $10.99 -> $13.99 +27%
Premium - $13.99 -> $16.99 +21%

The new originals better be pretty awesome with the volume of items leaving. Streaming is the best, can't wait to ditch cable and go with Netflix, Hulu Canada, Crave + HBO, CBS, DAZN and Disney instead :rofl:

I ditched cable years ago and I watch a lot of Netflix so I am fine with the hikes as long as they keep renewing series' I like to watch and producing decent original content. So far so good. There is a ton of garbage on there too but it's easy to identify. I do wish they brought back the rating system instead of "% match" though which made it easier to identify shows I've never heard of that might be good.

Looks like it was last august (Mine increased Oct 2017)

Basic plan (no HD, one screen streaming): $1 increase to $8.99 per month
Standard plan (HD, two screens streaming): $1 increase to $10.99 per month
Premium plan (4K, four screen streaming): $2 increase to $13.99 per month

Now they are worse than shaw and telus :rofl:

Hopefully nothing happens to my account again. Last year I got an e-mail saying the price is going to increase to $13.99 but they kept charging me $11.99.

It's still great value at $16.99, as we watch it everyday vs. our Optik TV plan which I only watch every other day (if that).

Was it just a warning email? I got one too, they sent it like a year before the actual price increase. The email itself was just a notification that the price would be increasing on X date, and they gave huge notice. Not sure if it's the same for you or not.

I just started watching that and it seems good.

Realistically, even $10/hr is dirt cheap for any kind of entertainment, so $10-15 for the entire month as long someone watches more than an hour or two of Netflix, I feel like it's a bargain. Being able to download most shows too for flights and such is also great.

Yeah I actually got 2 emails, first was for August 2017 and second was December 2017. Price increase still hasn't kicked in.

Awesome.

I have a similar experience with XM Radio - my 3 month trial ended May 2017 and I've had it ever since haha. Don't really use it but I check every now and then and it's still there. I remember reading somewhere that if you aren't online when they send the "kill" signal, it stays.

Considering we pay in the neighborhood of 100$/month for cable, Netflix is still a great value if it jacked itself up to 30$/month. Which is most likely their future outlook. Nobody notices or cares much about a 1$ increase, which they can get away with every couple years.

Slowly their content will get better. They are currently spending a fortune on production of exclusive content. Eventually all the good shows will be exclusive to Netflix, as it is cable is mainly producing boring garbage TV.

I see them jacking it up every year really. They have a lot of people by the balls that ended up canceling cable or otherwise always watch Netflix. A couple $ increase every time doesn't mean THAT much to an average person but it's a huge profit for the company when compounded with all the users. Even if a few users cancel the membership they still won't care as overall they'd be making more.

I find their content to be pretty shitty lately, I might cancel mine just because there isn't anything worth watching

This is where we're leaning. Original Netflix content is only worth so much, we'd do fine with Hulu+ and Crave+. US VPN still gets us Crackle too.

With the raised prices, I'll likely go back to subscribing for a few months out of the year. There is not enough new content for a yearly subscription - I personally struggle to find anything decent to watch these day anyway.

What do Crave and Prime offer over Netflix? Grand Tour is on Prime, other than that I haven't seen anything to make it worth the subscription, and I can just torrent Grand Tour anyway. Crave has nothing far as I can tell, maybe just newer content than Netflix? But Netflix has lots of exclusive content to make it worth my while. Maybe I'm just not on the up and up with these other services?

Spending useless funds on items on amazon. I never really use Amazon prime for movies/shows they are mostly older, not a big fan.

LilDrunkenSmurf
12-03-2018, 10:14 AM

Personally we dropped netflix a few years ago as there was just not enough content we wanted to watch. Once that new Disney+ (i think that is what it's called) comes out, might check it out and see how it is. It looks like all the Marvel shows will be moving to that streaming network once everything is finalized.

Prime is just a bonus for ordering shit on Amazon. Original contents are not bad, I watch a lot of sports documentaries like "All or Nothing" and "GP driver".
Crave is good for HBO/showtime contents, movies are newer than Netflix too i find.

Prime has oddball stuff, they also are not prudes on nudity. Original Pokémon is nice.

Amazon music does not sound right to me, also - it does not have a big selection. How you can not have "Hotel California" and still call yourself a music service is beyond me.

The streaming giant says the basic plan for subscribers remains unchanged at $9.99 a month, but the standard monthly plan is going up by one dollar to $14.99, and the premium by two dollars to $18.99
I might drop down to the standard plan at this rate.

Agreed. if I didn't have one of the few VPNs out there that has servers that work in every country that Netflix operates, giving me access to all the content in other areas, I'd have dropped it, as the Canadian content sucks right now so far as new programming.

Amazon as well - Amazon went on a real nazi-hunt to eliminate as many VPNs as possible, even my go-to Astrill, which is 2 to 3x the cost of other VPNs, if not more, failed here. I had to buy a private USA VPN from Astrill to get access to Amazon USA, but at least it works. Amazon USA = many times better than Canada in terms of content.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they can pull it off. I met and had drinks with a few guys on their encoding team a couple years ago in Vegas, and the ideas they were talking about to find further optimizations was eye opening. The biggest problem is that they target under 50” TVs when determining video quality, so for us with bigger TVs we’re the exception and suffer from poorer quality when they optimize further. That’s why Netflix is the worst when it comes to 4K quality.
