Laser headlights, Audi and BMW have them on a few of their models and they're the next big thing after LED headlights. An expensive addition on the vehicles that have them and as such, surely there must be a few beyond ballers who have a vehicle with production laser headlights. Are you one of them?

I'd wait until they're more mainstream. It wasn't until recently that LED headlights became "standard" for many vehicles. No one will really give a shit you spent $X k more for laser headlights.

Driving at night in a vehicle lower than a truck, those newer trucks with LED headlights are so damn bright.

After being on HID and LED for almost decades, jumping back into a 2014 Fit with good old halogens, I can't see shit.

There's almost no advantages to laser headlights, unless you drive an EV and care about range. Power consumption is the big plus. Who cares haha Can't wait to get blinded by oncoming traffic at twice the distance when this becomes mainstream.

What about the adaptive (active?) laser headlights that Audi came out with that make for better visibility in snow/rain etc because they don't shine light on the snowflakes? Pretty sure those haven't made it to North America yet, but I'd say that's a distinct advantage.

Just get older and you won't see shit anyways.

Any info on this? Can’t seem to find them, found some adaptive laser lights still in research at a university but results seemed pretty questionable with less intensity than even halogens and a 15-20% success rate at 100kph

Ya this is nothing like that. The current crop of laser headlights is just a low powered laser shot through some gasses and reflected out to create lighting that can go further with less power in a more compact package. Nothing really revolutionary.

1,500 euro option on the 8 series, worth it or not or just for baller status?

Is it even available in NA? If I remember right it’s not allowed here.

Edit - reading up on it here https://www.bmwoffreeport.com/blogs/827/how-bmw-lasterlight-work-and-what-are-benefits/

It turns off when detecting oncoming cars. Is this limited to high beams?

Edit 2 - https://www.bmwblog.com/2014/11/25/experience-bmw-i8-laser-headlights-night/

High beams only. Low and high beam uses LED with laser complimenting it on dark stretches of road with no oncoming traffic and clear road for 600m.

The big jump was to LEDs...this isn't as big of a jump.

I think Audi had Matrix LED lights too? might be wrong.

Matrix? Meh. Let’s do 1 megapixel of LEDs haha.

I guess though if you’re considering an 8 series $3000 is probably (better be) pocket change to you.

Aside from the cool factor, shining extra light on roadside pedestrians (but not thier face) sounds amazing. I've had those stupid pedos step out in front of me.

Does the 2019 X5 have laser lights? I think the i8 has them too.
