I know this gets discussed pretty often, but doesn't seem to be a consolidated place for it.

I'm looking for a new cell phone plan or two, either to use as leverage with Telus retentions or to actually switch to. Can be BYOD or include new phone, contract or not. Must have 1gb data per user and free texting. Don't care about minutes.

Anyone have suggestions?

Fido has the 10GB data plan on still the last I checked. Most people only really care about data but I am not sure if you do or not with your 1GB minimum requirement.

If you are in the BYOD camp, the best thing to do is be always looking for plans and keep switching to a better plan when it comes out - eventually you will 'ratchet' yourself into a phenomenal plan that you will never want to give up. That's what I've always done anyway.

All the 10GB plans seem to be back up in the $90 price range.

Freedom Mobile looks to be your only bargaining chip.

I would say Public Mobile. 40$ for 4.5 GB (3G but LTE is available for more $) and unlimited Canada Wide Calling.

My wife was with them for a few years but got offered a migration plan 8 gb for 40$ (25$ for the first year) with koodo so she switched. No contracts.

Last week, Fido and Koodo both had $75 BYOD 10GB plans - pretty standard but still cheaper than those in the $90-100 range.

If you're okay switching carriers, I would recommend Public Mobile though ^^^^ prepaid service, usually around $40-45 for 4GB and then wait to get an 'exclusive offer" text from Koodo to migrate over.. (usually comes after a few months).

Good rate plan offers can be had throughout the year, but if you're looking for hardware upgrades BF and BD is usually the way to go. Historically, BF has had better deals than BD.

I got the same deal except a month or two ago there was a deal on Redflag where if you called in to Rogers they gave you an extra 3GB of data for free. So 13GB for $60. I heard Rogers may (or has?) be raising these plans by $5.

I'm not saying to use the service. As discussed in a previous thread, you should (in theory) be able to do this yourself. But these are basically koodo special offers.

These are koodo plans. Haven't seen anything yet that really tops them. And being on the Telus/Bell network is the bees knees cause fuuuuuuck rogers.

They want to know your login info when you sign up then change it from within. Sounded sketchy to me

Get an out of province Koodo plan. 49$ for unlimited talk text and 6gb data.

And the services to get you on the plan work fine. You have to pay 10$ for a sim, and they charged 50-75$ to make the changes on your account. Overall takes about 2 weeks (because you have to wait 15 days for the first Bill so you don’t get flagged).

Just put a dummy password on your account, once everything’s done then charge the password and your fine.

Edit: I’ve used phonesavings.ca for myself and 3 others now. Not sure if they’re still around. The only caviet is you can’t do a large tab on the plan (May have changed but that’s how it was last year. It’s either BYOD or get a small/medium tab phone.

pheoxs basically explained it. While pricey at the $100 I paid, it has easily saved me $600 since I switched a year ago, and the process was super straightforward. Well worth what I paid, no hassle, no "is this going to work", just follow the directions and boom, done.

Yeah, and just to clarify when I used it, I didn't pay until after it was completed. They sent me the steps and what I needed to go get at the koodo kiosk, then sent them my login with a temp password, waited the couple weeks and got a message saying its all done. Logged into my koodo account, verified it all looked good, changed the password, then etransfered them.

Their deal is worst this year. So it's normalizing and becoming the BIG 4. Enjoys this while you can and grandfather as long as possible.

It wasn't bad this year. Instead of the 35% discount it was 25%

So what I'm learning is that while I certainly don't have the best plans, I'm not actually that bad off. Currently for my wife and I we are paying $130/mo and that includes some device balance from my Galaxy S7. So something like $55/mo average without device. Might look into the sub $50 plans, but don't expect huge savings.

Current offers for new telus customers appear much worse than what I'm paying. $80/mo BYOD minimum. Gross.

Koodoo has a $50/mo BYOD that would be fine for me.

It is too bad that you hadn't created this thread 2 weeks ago.

I don't see how that's better than Public's $40/mo with 4.5GB (5GB with auto pay):
https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/ab/plans

Same network. Public's also got a great US roaming package too. It's the only reason why I didn't switch to Koodoo.

Too bad you didn't ask this 2 weeks ago. You would have a $25 referral bonus for both yourself and whoever referred you.

I signed up in August and right after they had a promo to try and get people to transfer over to Koodoo from Public and they gave you a bunch of credit or something. My suggestion is to sign up for Public and wait for that to come again if you want to go to Koodoo.

Yea, I don't know why anyone would agree to that:

Theoretically, HSPA has a maximum download speed of 7.2 megabits per second and a maximum upload speed of 1.4 megabits per second

Best case scenario is basically 720p streaming for any video. Web and software bloat has gotten so bad, 3g would be brutal in this day and age.

49$ - 6gb
56$ - 8gb

Very true.

Overall i think people have a bad memory on what we got for $50 to $60 before. I remember data packages being $25 for 4 mb. That didnt include your caller I'd and voicemail for $12. Your system access for of $8 plus your crappy cell plan for $45. A plan like that meant you had $60 in overages + charges for international text or long distance(that wasnt included back then).

Overall there are some competitive options.

Just went through this, online rep knew exactly why I was contacting, no need to even complain. I come no where near using 10GB, but if i'm paying the $70 regardless, I at least want the option to use 15GB. In and out in less than 5 if anyone hits the online support.

I don't know why this is irking me so much, I expense my bill anyway :drama:

Same deal here with online chat. Pretty simple.

Currently split 2.5gb with my wife and that's plenty. We have wifi most places. While I was on my telus account for home services this weekend I noticed that they have a 3GB shareable data for $5 less than the 2.5bg I was currently sharing with my wife. Still will probably go with public one of these days, just need to get a couple things squared away.

Also, I think this is obvious, but I don't mind asking stupid questions, if I have a locked Telus device, it'll work on Koodoo and Public since they are the same network, right?

Yes.

Also, you should be able to contact telus and just get a code to unlock the phone. Used to have to pay but I believe it's free these days.

You don't even have to be one of their current subscribers. Just use the online chat.

On a side note: Fido upgraded the local celltower to 4G yesterday. Now getting 23.7 mbps download, shweet.

Crazy how they used a crane with a cable suspended basket for the installers though, makes things way more difficult than solid arm.

I'm with Telus on the 10gb/$60 plan as well. Was anyone able to negotiate anything additional for the price increase to $70 (other than 5GB extra)?

The time has come...extra $70 out of my pocket a year. Still a good deal though haha.

Max, what could I have gotten with college white girls using $70?

Telus I was only able to negotiate the 15gb for $70. And Rogers I got 13gb + 1gb bonus for $65.

I tried but Rogers online wouldn't budge. I guess it's okay since I only used 5/10gb generally.

I still remember paying $65 for 1gb 6-7 years back

Does anyone else have the issue on Rogers that while on a call, data drops from LTE to 3G? This is on an iPhone 8. I don’t seems to remember that being the case on Telus? Maybe I’m wrong. Makes it hard to do online stuff while on a call.

It's normal unless you have a VoLTE (voice over LTE) enabled phone and your provider has also enabled it for you.
I'm not sure if the iPhone 8 has it.

My iPhone X on Koodo (Telus) does that.

Are there any good deals on new phones and plans out there these days? I’m on a iPhone 6S+ that turns three years old this month and have the $65 BYOD Rogers 10gb plan currently and I’m debating thinking about a newer iPhone.

My old 6 did as well. Wonder what’s different with the 8? Literally the second I initiate a call it drops to 3G, even though I may have full bars of LTE.
