Audi 2.0t - Oil consumption

Anyone here have recent experience with Audi Canada and getting the stage 2 service covered? I have a 2009 2.0 A4 Avant, 125,000kms, and noticed recent increased consumption. Under the class action they increased the warranty to 8 years or 130,000 km’s.

It’s in for the stage 1 service now, which I’m paying for, and I’m expecting it to fail. As I’m technically out of warranty I think it’s at the descrestion of Audi Canada and looking for anyone with suggestions for the best way to approach this.

interestingly enough, i just had a test done on mine and it failed. But mine is a 2013 (i believe the class action for the known issue is for 2009-2012) and also has pretty high mileage (180K). The SA at Royal Oak is going to see if Audi Canada will cover my situation, but if not i also purchased Audi Aftercare when i bought mine used so between those two avenues i'm praying mine is fully covered too.

Shitty deal that you're under the km limit, but over the time limit. Don't have any advice for you since i'm also in the early stages of this but hopefully they decide to cover yours.

How bad is your oil consumption? Under 1000km per qt?
Do you see blue smoke when accelerating?

2009 - early 2012 A4 CAEB engine are known for undersized piston, stuck oil control rings, also the long oil change interval (15000km) build up sludge in your engine.

Mine is a 2012 with 173,000km. I did an engine flush last year and change my oil every 5000-6000km, oil consumption seems a little bit better than before (from 800km per qt to 1500km per qt) and I check every week to ensure I have enough oil in the engine. Since mine is a 2012, so I might have a correct piston size, maybe just stuck piston rings. Italian tune up might free up stuck piston rings ;) As long as you don't see blue smoke, your engine should run fine for a long time if you keep enough engine oil in the engine.

I went to Glenmore Audi last year with 150,000km got the stage 1 (PCV valve replaced) and I was quoted for around $5000 to get the stage 2 fix, Audi Canada covered the parts. But I didn't do it, since $5000 can buy a lot of engine oil, and I don't feel like paying the stealership. I can always ask my mechanic friend to rebuild my engine with about the same price or less in the future.

I was quoted with few Audi specialists in town for engine swap or rebuild.

Engine Swap $5000 - $8000 (But no guarantee if the pistons size are correct, also you might need to do the timing chain)
Engine Rebuild $8000 - $12000

If you have all your service records, you might be able to get it fix for free or parts covered. Give both Glenmore and Royal Oak Audi a call, and see what they can do for you.

Its an American car but has been serviced at Glenmore Audi since 2014.

Apparently the engine code was for the turbo and needs the turbo replaced as well.

Picking it up tonight after the stage 1 service so we'll see how it runs this week.

I have a 2011 A5 with about 100,000 km. I drive about 10k per year and change my oil once a year. I usually need to top it off once with about 0.25-0.5 quart towards the end of the year.

Off-topic, but I recently proactively change the timing chain tensioner. I had hear stories of it failing. Anybody else get it done?

First owner replaced it in 2016 at 120,000km, I am the third owner. First owner got a MIL on highway, then the car went to limp mode after 2km, chain was skipping over timing gears.

Check and see if you have the latest revision tensioner. Mine is 06K109467K. You might want to change it every 100,000 - 120,000km

I will say for any timing chain, you should check it regularly, like every 60000km - 80000km and see if it has stretched.

Everyone drives different and every engine is different, just remember there is no life time part or fluid. Manufactures life time definition is their warranty period.

Ending up burning on average 2.5l/1000kms.

Claim is being submitted to Audi and the dealer is telling me ~70% of the cost is being covered.

Apparently the turbo was another issue for this engine and was being replaced under warranty until 70,000kms.

Looking at K04 kits now... going to be an expensive month!

so update on my situation after a looooooong wait. Mine was in pretty bad shape... basically my "add oil" indicator came on exactly 1500km from when the test started where they filled it to the top. I don't know the exact amount of oil that is, but whatever amount gets you from the top line to the bottom line on the electronic gauge. Since the oil change interval is 15,000km, that would translate to having to add oil 9-10 times between an oil change which is way too much IMO.

Anyways, dealer put in a claim to Audi Canada but they would not cover it since i was past the 130k... all they offered me was $2k off the price of a new vehicle (lol)

So then we put a claim into my Audi After Care warranty, and after about a month of back and forth, finally got approved to cover the ~$9000 job (full engine rebuild). I have to admit i had a bit of buyer's remorse back in 2016 paying an extra $5k for the extended warranty but now i am sure happy i got it.

I've thought about getting a TT but rare to find a manual and the thought of repairs and maintenance scare the crap out of me.

I do plan on owning a 2013+ S4 though one day as I've heard those are great.

Are they actually going to rebuild the engine or just swap in a new short block? Regardless, it is good to hear that you are being taken care of.

From the documentation i've seen, looks like a rebuild (the first line item is replace pistons and rings, and the rest of the quote has a lot of other parts that say remove + reinstall). I would have thought it would be cheaper/easier for them to swap in a short block but this is what they quoted me. Apparently it's a 4 day job so i'll have a loaner for a week.

But yeah i'm pretty happy and lucky I decided to get the warranty at the time. One of the few cases where it turned out to be a good decision to get it :)

Exactly - the rational used car market for these vehicle is a) someone with OEM extended warranty or b) someone who knows a lot about these specific vehicles.

Buying a 5+ year old Audi from a gravel used car lot with '90 day warranty' (which they will attempt to skirt as often as possible) is just going to end in disaster.
