Hey guys, some of you have been following my employment journey from petroleum engineering, to unemployment, self employment, car rental and a few dead-end paths as well (IT support, network design and a railway). I truly want to thank the many of you who offered me advice, leads, coffee, introductions and even the one beyonder who offered me a survival job.

However, I just started a new position at an oilfield service company doing applications engineering and sales support. It's similar in concept to some positions I've had in the past, b ut what really makes this one special is that I truly feel that a) I can help this company in a way their current people can't and b) I think this company has some technology that really sets it apart from it's competition.

Anyone who follows me on LinkedIn will see my update there in a day or two, and anyone who wants to meet up, I'll buy the coffee this time!

To answer a couple of questions:
1) Was this from the yellow shirt? YES, the yellow shirt campaign at the oil show directly lead to a discussion with the hiring manager, an in-person interview, and a very quick job offer.
2) Does this mean the Canadian oil and gas industry is heating back up? NO, the outlook is still very weak in the near-term, but as always, the longer term prospects are strong. I personally don't think we'll ever have the same total petroleum employment in Alberta that we once did, but the industry itself will survive and thrive, I firmly believe that.
3) are you going to buy a bunch of stupid crap now? MAYBE, I do need a new laptop for work, and a few other things in the short term. Probably a new truck, but I'm not sure how soon that's happening.

Well, I gave up lots of times, cried myself to sleep a few times, and then tried new ideas/angles lots of times too. It's funny, my "best" ideas went nowhere, like that consulting business. Lots of people told me that was a million dollar idea. Maybe it was, but it didn't work out like that. Ah well, one guy only needs one job, and I got that.

I've been off for a month and just got news that I will be going up north starting on Monday for 2 months. I was supposed to start a different project this morning, but got a text at 10:30 last night saying don't come in.

Any time I get a chance to learn something new, I'm game. This week(end) I'm learning how to set up for a trade show. Man some companies spend a lot of money! Kappa has a video wall 20 feet high and about 40 feet wide. The crew setting that up is a dozen guys.
