I searched, but most everything is 3-5 years old now. I know there has been big improvements in this industry since then.

Looking for a dashcam that won't break the bank. But not the cheapest POS out there either. Just looking for some key features like front and back facing cams, shock sensitivity to turn on when the car is parked and gets hit, good enough picture quality to read a plate at a decent distance. Must be hardwired, but it appears that they are mainly micro USB power wires, and a hardwire kit for that is like 15$.

This is one I came across without much effort on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.ca/TOGUARD-Inside-Outside-Camera-Dashboard/dp/B07M8V5RTR/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvp?keywords=dash+cam&pd_rd_i=B07M8V5RTR&pd_rd_r=d5a306ce-7f14-42f4-b329-b5348aa8fa07&pd_rd_w=CLCk9&pd_rd_wg=7HTlj&pf_rd_p=25609a94-16af-4bd7-9107-c9f01f8c9bd0&pf_rd_r=HVQ4CRX9A8WQWWZKG9P1&qid=1563454410&s=gateway

I just ordered one from Banggood.com. Back and front cam.
I bought a conversion thingy to hardwire it. I paid about $45 I think.
Will update once it comes in the mail.

I saw one on their email deals last week for 43$. Probably the same one.

I need to get one ASAP, that's why I was looking at Amazon. Didn't want to wait for China shipping(even though it seems to be quicker than shipping from U.S.) I'm sick of the shit in this Province. Some idiot kid side swiped the wife in the GLE the other day. He ran straight to the cop shop to file a report and say that she somehow swerved into him. So now I have another ordeal with insurance yet again. Last car before it was stolen got hit and ran twice. dashcam would've handled all of these incidents.

The new YI Nightscape if you are after a budget recommendation. Approx $97ish
Same form factor as the existing Yi but it is now a capacitor based came instead of lithium, they also upgraded to the Sony Starvis sensor which has much better night vision.
Only complaint with this one so far is that after a peroid of time the camera hassles you to rest and you can't turn those prompts off

The Viofo A119 v3 was just released as well. Video quality of that one easily matches the high end dash cams. New pin structure on the GPS mount, and better resolution. If you don't mind not having WiFi then this would be my recommendation @ roughly $150 from OCD Tronic on Amazon.

Dual channel go for the A129. Lower resolution than the A119 V3 but includes WiFi and the rear camera. Reliability has been good from what I've read on the dashcam forums. Approx $230

Cheapest go with the B1W. Best stealth style with a decent app, most of the control must be done through the app. I've installed this on my parents car and its been solid. Approx $70

All are prime on Amazon, just make sure you order from a reputable dealer. Black box my car, OCD Tronic, Spytec

I use the thinkware f550 front and back in my truck at the moment. It's been awesome. I think it was originally $250 for the front and 99 for the rear camera.

I've been looking at upgrading to the black vue 750 or 900 series dash cams. I'm mostly interested in the wifi capabilities but there are lots of other options you can use including remote viewing capabilities, GPS & speed tracking.

These will be on the high end of pricing.

I have the Thinkware F770 Front and Rear but this would be out of the range your looking for but they do have some cheaper options where I purchased from

I recently got the 70mai (xiaomi licensed) camera 1944P, does wifi for easily offloading the videos to your phone, seems pretty good so far, only had it for a couple months.

Here's a sample video i got the other day, only saved it because that trike thing was neat. this one was only 1440, so make sure you pick the 1440 resolution

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Not many fit the requirement of dual cameras. Ended up finding this one, ordered 2 of them. 41.50$ each. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Question- How do most people wire these? Just go with constant power, and try to remember to turn it off when parking to avoid killing the battery? Seems like wiring to switched power source means it wouldn't be able to turn on and record when it senses a shock when it's parked.

I have been using this refurb Cobra from Visions since December and it works great as a dual channel. Sometimes it goes on sale for $150:

You will need some sort of battery protection unit in line.

https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-za60ms/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/106/2627/BlackVueHardwiringPMP__42533.1473017861.jpg

I hardwired mine without battery protection but it has a kill switch. I drive daily so it's not an issue and parking mode doesn't seem to draw that much. But if I have to park it for longer or it get cold out, I hit the kill switch.

typically the ones with parking mode have a built in battery, or they're powered by both a constant and switched power so they know when to record when you're driving, the power they use in parking mode is minimal and typically wont kill the battery unless you leave them for a week or more.... there are issues with that method on newer cars though, some have battery meters that see the parasitic draw and shut it down to avoid draining the battery, which renders the camera useless.

Mine just came in the post.

I'l try and wire this up over the weekend and we can compare notes OP.

Does anyone have any tips on how to thread the cable through the ceiling of the vehicle to the back? Old coat hanger??:dunno:

Through the ceiling? Maybe your comment is explained by your pic, which I can't see as all pics from this site are blocked.

The way you wire anything on your windshield is generally to go up to the headliner, then across the front of the headliner to one of the A pillars, down the pillar and beside the dash into the footwell. From there you can pull through the firewall for power if your fuse box is under the hood like most. If you're running a rear view camera for this, then you can route along the lower trim to the rear.

its typically not that easy, there's often obstructions and dense foam blocks in the ceiling for insulation, its expecially difficult with a sunroof. Typically i find i have to remove all the upper trim pieces and run the wire down one side a couple inches in from the outer side of the roof liner.

the viofo dash cams are pretty good and dont break the bank they have one that is a dual channel. they are wedge designed which makes the camera very discrete.

Sooooooo....
I managed to wire the rear cam to the front through the headliner... as i was detaching the fishhook with my knife(electric tape). It slipped & cut through the dam wire..
FML. I ballsedup..

Any idea how to connect this? The rear camera on the other side has something that connects two different types of wires.
I looked at buying just the rear cam again as its so cheap. But none have the same connector..

Any ideas?

I had a set that came with a cam like that. The mirror/screen part came smashed and I got a free replacement.
Not sure if I kept the parts for the first set... I'll have to go digging.

just strip the wires and twist them together and put on some tape, probably only 2 wires anyway (maybe 4 if it has IR/leds)

I got this one for $30 after a promo code:

https://www.amazon.ca/Campark-Dashboard-170%C2%B0Wide-G-Sensor-Parking/dp/B07RFVDTF7/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=campark+dash+cam&qid=1564176463&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExQzI0RVg3SlQ5VkVWJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDU5NzIyMjNIRVhBSDlIWkJDSSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzM1ODEzMzNUWklTNUZYTU41RiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

I'll try remember let you know how it is. I have another camera from this company though and it is excellent. Reviews in the USA for similar products from the same manufacturer have 4,000+ positive reviews. Some of the Amazon.ca reviews are bought so I ignored them (free SD card or similar if you post a video).

You can probably just solder and tape it up or shrink wrap that back together. Those connectors are only 2 wires. It looks like you left yourself enough cable to do a splice.

i thought that at first too, but there are 4 pins on that connector, and the camera has LED's so its likely got 2 power wires for the LEDs too, so its likely 4 wires,

I got some help from a neighbour. He soldered it together and shrink wrapped it. Its was pretty tight, and we thought it was not going to work.
Im kinda surprised it did.

I managed to feed the read camera line through headliner on the side, across the front A pillar at the front. The rear camera feed shows in reverse. There is no ability in the options menu to correct this. Its no biggi. Im just happy it works.

I got a hard wire connector. The connector to the fuse box and hard wire mount is separate and can be attached. But the fuse connection is waay to big for my fusebox. I'l need a smaller connector. Not sure I can get one, any suggestions. I'l post pictures later.

Compared to my old dashcam, this camera is huge and very visible, I dont like it. Its not black either (metallic blue), so does not hide well in the interior shade of the car.. Suction mount and design is waaay better than my old one.
Overall for less than $40 and a rear camera. I have no complaints. I will see how the image is after I drive around for a bit.

Guess I never did give feedback. The dual channel in this is kind of useless, you can't adjust the angle of the camera facing the cabin, so it basically just records your right arm if you have the front camera facing the road properly.

It does this weird thing at night. I assume it is due to the screen having backlighting for better nighttime visibility. But the screen goes bright then dark continuously if you drive on a dark road with street lamps. It's really annoying.

The boot up time seems reasonable, and I feel like it could still catch a hit and run.

Overall for the price I paid I think it is great. One of these days I'll upgrade to something higher quality, but this does the trick for now.

I have nothing to add but to reiterate..get a dash cam if you don't have one. Even just get a cheapo $20 like I have is better than nothing until you figure out what you want.

What's a good dashcam nowadays? I've been using the DOD LS360W with teh Sony Exmore lens and it finally quit on me - hasn't recorded shit in months and I just found out...

So looking for a replacement unit.

I just got my new dash cam the other week. Im just finalising the install.. I might do a write up later.
Its the one in the link. It was about $109 all in. Shipping took a month. The reason for the change was the size and the way my current camera sits in relation to the angle of the front windscreen. The suction cup holder, length it hangs, size of the cam looked a bit too ghetto in my new car.

The new camera I ordered is smaller. It can video up to 4k. But I do it at a lower resolution. The picture quality is better in low light. It has wireless, GPS features, speed tracking and collision detection. The rear cam is 1080pi (standard is 720). The front camera sits better.

My old dashcam finally bit the dust after 10 years. It was a Blackvue and figured I'd get the same.

Reading reviews of all the high end cams, it seems like failure rate is really high across all brands and CS is unreliable.

Is there anything that's reliable, regardless of budget??

BF is coming up and hoping to get one for each vehicle

I've been running a Blackvue DR470-CH for 6 years with no issues, but it's also not running 24/7 and is only on when car is running. I think that's the key to longevity.

Also a X1PRO Rear View Mirror Dash for 4 years in my truck, and have had issues with the rear camera but I think it's because I disconnect it every time I tow (and hook it to a seperate camera attached to the back of the trailer). So the plug gets filth in it.

The only thing he didn't talk about was form factor. I didn't pay for high performance, I paid so I never have to look at the thing as it's 100% hidden from drivers view.

A119 looks huge but it will hide behind the rear view mirror from the driver. Not the passenger tho.

And unless you have voice control like Garmin, you may want to reach for event saving button.

Anyone have a suggestion for a good memory card? Or should I just pick the one that's discounted the most this week on amazon?

i wouldn't buy any memory cards from Amazon. There's a lot of fakes that get mixed in with the legit ones at the warehouses. I would just go grab whatever Sandisk ones they have at Costco. They're on sale pretty frequently too.

I agree with this. I would buy from Costco, or local stores Best Buy, Staples, or Memory Express. For memory cards on dash cams, I went with "endurance" cards like this one from memory express. https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00121810 They cost more than the Amazon listing, but Memory Express was able to price match that.

The V2 does, so I would assume the V3 does. It just turns on for a minute or two when the car starts and then shuts off.

GoPro? I can't imagine riding so much where it's a hassle to turn it on/take it with you. Could be wrong, but a GoPro is going to be so much better than the shit being recommended.

I'm not sure about other riders, but when I tried mounting an action cam to the handlebar of my bike, the video did not come out well at all. The rolling shutter of the camera and the vibration of the engine were interacting together and the video would come out very wavy, almost like you were intoxicated or underwater. It was especially pronounced when the bike was at a stop.

Not my video, but you can see what I mean. The footage is completely unusable.
tjGwOPnTRsU

I've read to get around this, make sure whatever camera you're using is recording at a frame rate of at least 60fps. Or mount it to your helmet, which is what I ended up doing.

Yeah I'm with you, in the hassle of a GoPro. I fell in love with riding this summer. I just worry about other drivers alot. Cut off in my car, fender bender. Cut off on my bike, injury. I may go with something off of Reddit/Amazon recommendations, but was hoping to hear about something good on beyond.

Thanks for this. Which camera are you using on your helmet? I don't want to look like a dorky, anteannaed teletubby. It's enough I see those on the ski hill haha. I've also seen some mounts with dampeners to reduce the vibrations you cited.

I’ve had okay luck mounting it on my tank, but still got wavy like that occasionally. +1 for just putting it on your helmet if you’re on a sport bike. side/chin mount looks a little less silly than right on top. If you’re on a cruiser or Harley of some type a chest strap thing might work. That’s a bit of a fuckaround compared to helmet mount though.

D'z Nutz
11-19-2022, 10:03 AM
Yeah I just chin mounted a Go-Pro knockoff to the helmet. I didn't mount on top cause I didn't want the visor hitting it and mounting it on the side seemed stupid cause I wouldn't be getting the other half of the road. Mounting it on the chin felt less intrusive too.

Hmm..I am tempted to order. I like how it's obd and out of the way install which is why I don't get one. No sense in paying for professional install since I would get rid of the vehicle in 6 or so months. SO this seems like a good option.

Only downsides I can see is the monthly subscription required, and no mention of camera quality...

I agree completely, but I do have the Ring subscription for my doorbell also and it kina is worth it. Way easier than my self monitoring home cameras and storage of recordings. If they have a bundle for this with the doorbell I may just get a couple of these. Depending on camera/vid quality.

Wife's new onlyfans account should be able to pay for the subscription.

Yea I have been anticipating subscribing for the home door anyway, so if there is a combo or something then I may consider it. I like the clean looks and ease of install of the dash cam for sure so that's a big place and the price itself isn't terrible. Though I think it's 200USD and that site shows it's not available to be shipped to Canada.

Got my fitcamx. Install was fairly easy. From the new housing you can tell where to push the interlocking tabs to remove the factory one. Once you got the housing off, it's plug and play and pushing the new housing on. My wiring is somewhat different so it took me some guessing to figure out which one is the rain sensor. Confirmed it with a spray bottle. Since it's integrated it looks factory with nothing extra stuck on the windshield. Video quality is fine. I believe it uses the same hardware as most dashcam. You can have parking mode and dual set up but you'll have to run the wiring which I don't want to do. So far I'm happy.

For anyone mounting the camera make sure the lens is not in the dirty spot of the windshield:facepalm: I mounted mine high up behind the rear view mirror and just realized yesterday over half the screen is just a blurry mess from the dirt on the windshield.
I was on deerfoot and saw a massive sheet of ice fly off a semi and it didnt look like it hit anyone because traffic just continued. Within about 15 seconds i see a car doing about 90km/hr with its hazards on so i figure it got hit. I catch up to it and look over and her windshield is fucked but she just kept driving. I lock the clip and figure i should have it all on recording and lucky me you cant see shit.
