Holy shit, storm surge of 5-7m in bahamas and sustained winds of 295 km/h, gusting up to 350 km/h.

Never been, but Wiki says:

Geography of the Bahamas
The Bahamas consists of a chain of islands spread out over some 500 miles in the Atlantic Ocean, located to the east of Florida in the United States.....All the islands are low and flat, with ridges that usually rise no more than 15 to 20 m
If the ridges are 15m above sea level, how much of the land is under water during a 7m storm surge? Has to be most of it.

storm surges far less than that are devastating

Yeah. Shit could get crazy in the next 48 hours for the North East side of Florida, Georgia and then the Carolina's. I don't have any idea how far out fro the storm centre the surges go. I would assume they are worst at the middle anyway.

Anyone who complains about Calgary's weather, at least we don't have this.

I was considering a disney cruise to Castaway Cay this february too. Shit might be trashed.

The Mouse will fix that up much faster than any other infrastructure. I'll bet the towns and cities are still fucked, but Castaway will be rebuilt asap.

How far out from the center do damaging winds and storm surges go?

I am going to Nova Scotia and flying in on Saturday early morning. Sounds like the hurricane may be hitting Nova Scotia mid afternoon on Saturday. It will probably be a tropical storm by that time but it will definitely be cool to see the waves from the storm.

depends on where you are oriented with respect to the eye.

I am glad that I didn't give two weeks notice on my current job. I was supposed to start my new job in Bahams next week.

Don’t worry. The electrical grid in the maritimes is made of crystal.

Any more than a light breeze and half the province will be out of power and it will be a pandemic.

The ongoing coverage is funny in that they’re reporting on the absolute worst what ifs like it’s still armageddon.

Guess that’s the only way to get ratings and make money these days. Sell fear even tho we’ve all been desensitized to it.

Sounds like it will be hitting nova scotia about 6 hours after we land. 150+mm of rain and 120-140 km winds.

Its 'fear-tainment' now. The MSM still gets profits from it. Tie it in to global warming disaster and its a ratings bonanza!

Made it all the way up into Canada and landed as a fast passing tropical storm. And still managed to wreak havoc.

Construction crane looked like a wet noodle

Are we that unprepared for even a tropical storm?

Apparently the crane wasn’t setup properly to deal with it.

Nova Scotias infrastructure is made of crystal. You should see what happens when it snows more than 3cm...

Quel suprise.

I'm at my cottage in New Brunswick and surprisingly nothing really happened, power flickered a few times but that was about it. My family members lost power and a bunch of large trees were toppled over, but that's about it.

Well, it just came out of nowhere.

I was thinking the same thing, but after watching it peter out through the entire US and hearing the unsubstantiated hysterical nonsense from frenzied media, I could see myself going "Pffft - whatever. There's nothing to prepare for!" and then getting fucked.

It packed a little punch. That fkr still had winds of 180 when I was monitoring it just off shore. Plenty of spots recorded 120-140 on land, and thats MANY hours of wind, not just a quick AB thunder storm rolling thru.

Wasn't too terrible at my house on the South Shore, North Shore got it worse.

Lost power for 40 hours which sucked, more so not having running water. My parents still don't have electricity and other parts of the island might not have it restored until later this week.

Mind boggling how the govt will never put money into burying the power lines here, I get not much money to go around but there's large scale power outages several times a year.
