Who's ready for another Mar thread?

I have a strip of grass behind my house with a fence separating me from the businesses. The problem is there are actually 2 fences there and someone has taken up residency in between them as you can see from this photo I took out my window. I'm actually quite impressed with what they've built there, they have tarps on top and bottom with some hard substance for a floor. Everything is tied off to the trees and fence very nicely.

I called the police and the city before I went on vacation mid August. I just got back to Calgary last weekend and the tarps have been moved around but the people are still there. We phoned again a few days ago and last night I could hear them arguing with someone so I'm assuming that was the police coming to ask them to move on. We phoned the police again today and were told they can only ask the people to move on, they can't force the homeless to move. They also don't do anything if they come out and the people aren't there at that time and the city won't come out to take down the shelter until the police have removed the people.

We spoke to the 2 businesses there and they said they have called to complain multiple times, one of the business owners told us they see the couple doing heroin back there sometimes and the place is full of needles.

Now I realize I'm going to have to do something about this myself so I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend ways to get rid of them. Are there places in Calgary that sell smoke bombs? Are there services I can hire to force them to move? I don't like the fact these people have a close watch on when I come and go from my home and when my girlfriend is at home alone.

At an old customers place, there were homeless people living underneath the loading dock. They were told to vacate, but they wouldn't. I had to install a 60 ton chiller, so we put it right next to the loading dock to make it as uncomfortable as possible for the dock dwellers. So I start the machine up and one of them comes out to ask me what this machine is, I tell him it's a scroll chiller and its very loud. The man then asks me why they weren't consulted on the installation and if I can do anything to mitigate the noise, I say "no" . The man asks me if the owners are going to help them find a new place to live, I inform he doesn't have a place, he is living under a fucking loading dock. Good luck Mar, these people aren't easy to deal with, and the cops don't want to get involved.

Ages ago we used to use these special aerosol cans to test manhole gas detectors, the stuff they sprayed out smelled like the worst imaginable farts. I'm sure the O&G people in here know what I'm talking about, get some of that and liberally spray their living area while they're out. That should encourage them to move on. If they stick around with that stench in their living area then you're probably stuck with them.

I deal with crack addicts and homeless especially in the winter months at my condo. The police say to call them to kick them out but with them being busy, it can take up to an hour for them to arrive. When I need to get to work, I don't have time waiting so being 6 foot 8 and not being a skinny lad, I just scare the crap out of them and for the most part they don't come back. Get some biker dudes to stop by and "evict them"

Looks like the penalty is $150. CPS should roll in, issue every one of them a $150 fine, and give them a couple hours to clear their garbage or seize it all to prevent the commission of an offence. Problem solved.

Giving homeless a ticket, yeah that'll teach them.

Unless that's a hotspot of activity, cops won't care. Homeless has been setting up camps on a hillside off Cliff st among the trees at Mount Royal for years. Nothing has been done.

Maybe work on electrifying your fence perimeter in case they try a counter-attack.

Go and find out who they are, where they are from. What's their story. It may take some time, but keep trying. Try not to jump to conclusions, I know, easier said then done. Have you witnessed the drug use? Another thing to remember is that its almost mid september. Soon that white stuff will be gracing us with its presence, and unless they have some form of heat, they may move on.
Do you and your girlfriend know anybody with a bigger dog? Maybe someone here has a big Pitty or Rotti they can lend you. It might help them find a better spot.

Whatever you do, make sure it can't be traced back to your house - the last thing you want is people with nothing to lose and immunity to most crimes mad at you.

Your best bet might just be to wait for the Winter to naturally remove them, and put something there so that it makes it a less desirable place to re-settle in the Spring. Maybe brainstorm with the neighbors/business owners - sounds like you all have a common interest.

This is getting to be quite the structure, they have a tarp on top, a tarp on the ground and some hard flooring laid down. There's another tarp going up next to this one now, it's turning into a dry channel all the way down.

So it seems like the only suggestions are a lot of unlawful things and to turn on the sprinklers. The sprinklers would be similar to the rain we got today and with the tarps, I really don't think they got wet. It's a pretty solid setup.

Police and Bylaw do literally nothing to deter the homeless from doing what they do. Tickets obviously don't work and I don't think being there is going to get them arrested - even if they did they would be out in no time and right back there. All they do is tell them to move along or take down their tarps, and they'll be right back up the instant the police leave. At my old condo we had to have crack heads kicked out of our parkade area several times a week by the Police, same general group of people every time, for the entire 7+ years I lived there. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still there as there as it was warm and there is never a consequence.

Putting a large physical impediment there during the winter when they have left for warmer accommodation is still the best solution IMO. If something is there that they can't move, they are going to find somewhere else.

so i reently went through something similar, i didnt post before because it wasnt resolved, but now it is so i'll tell the story

about 3 weeks ago, while walking to my bus stop i saw a bike parked at the back of a local business here, i thought it was odd because people like to steal bikes and this one was unlocked... then i noticed that there was an old sign, one of those big box lighted signs stores use, it was leaned up on the side of the building, obviously removed from service but never trashed, anyway there was a bunch of cardboard and tarps and stuff taped to either end of it making a bit of a tent, some homeless guy living there, so i put in a complaint on the 311 app as a general issue, then they closed that one and re-opened another classified as "commercial encampment" it sat like that for a couple weeks and today on my way home i noticed it had all been cleaned out, not sure if it was the city, the business, (or unlikely the inhabitant) that had removed it all.
