View Full Version : Mainlander Chinese - Opinion of westerners with beards?

Not really a travel question, but whatever. Was having a chat recently and it came up how in Japan, a white guy with a beard will often be shown some additional respect, because it makes him look older I guess? What's the deal in mainland china? I know most Chinese people can't or don't really grow beards, but what's the opinion of people who do? Am I right in assuming that they'd be viewed slightly differently than some clean-shaven white guy?

Not important at all, just an interesting topic. I love learning about other cultures.

As a Chinese guy living in white North America, I'm reminded everyday in November of my inability to grow a beard. Sometimes like today, I close my office door, and can get away without the feeling of facial inferiority till about lunch time. Then I go into this thread which completely fucks my plan. My office door is now open.

Thanks ExtraSlow

Most Chinese in the North can grow wicked beards. It's the southerners genes that can't.

Now on one hand, I believe the Asian culture is moving toward this as ideal male:

2nd, with advancing facial recognition and general association with beard = Muslim rebels, I don't see how it will get too popular in China

In Asia, white is right. Facts.

I spent a bit of time on the mainland with a pretty healthy beard.
Got a lot of attention - stares on the street and things like that. Some people stopped to try to talk with me or take a picture and of those that did, many tried to touch it without asking.
So yeah, you might be treated differently, but I experience anything negative about it (other than people trying to put their hands on your face - but hey, maybe that's your kink).

I would think in the mainland there's a growing anti Westerner sentiment so anything you can do to make yourself look "less white" would be beneficial. I know in certain parts and in certain times in history, facial hair was frowned upon, same with having a tan and/or darker skin.

That's just your faulty genetics. I know many Asians that can grow a mean beard, including myself.

I heard you only get additional respect in Asian cultures when you have facial hair only if you rock a fu man chu.

I was worried that might be going to far. But if you recommend it, I'm game.

Nearing the end of my sixth decade, never have been able to grow a proper beard or moustache, never have concerned myself with it either. My Dad, now in his mid 80's, never has been able to either yet my eldest son is quite capable of doing either.
