Last night at Market Mall I was with the family shopping at Sporting Life when we witnessed a group of late teens, probably 6 to 8 of them, grabbing as many winter jackets as possible and running out of the store. I have never seen this in Calgary before. Crazy times.

I thought that's just winterpeg.

Also, I believe the police has moved out of Market Mall and CF has not raised the security presence like Chinook. Easy target.

That's said, I would believe whatever they took would probably be under $300 each, I remember all Canada Goose are cable locked.

NE gonna.. Oh wait that's NW.

Can't blame though, its gonna get cold tomorrow, and if another FEB hits - its a matter of survival.

It's the new craze on the internet now... since they're teens they're protected by the young offenders act and won't get anything other than a slap on the wrist

I had friends who worked in loss prevention at Chinook all through University and I hung out with them regularly on the job. There is literally no consequence to getting caught, and loss prevention employees aren't allowed to chase people out of the store so the theives just need to out run you for a few moments, and no loss prevention employee making $15/hr is going to risk their lives chasing/tackling some crackhead out of the store who might have a weapon. Grab & run is the way to do it as long as you can make it to the door. Teenage girls stealing makeup was the most common thing we saw, and also crackheads with babies - they put the goods under the child so that they could raise a huge stink if they got searched/arrested. Some people would line their purses with tinfoil to defeat the magnetic alarms at the doors and then just pretend they didn't speak English when caught. If you're under age or a first offense, they just call your parents and then you go home after giving back the stolen goods unless something has changed. Sometimes Police would come to "scare" them. They then fine the parents $500 for the disruption to the store and potential lost business due to the 'scene' and hit you with a ban from the store that is not in any way enforced. Also, if they suspected someone is stealing, and they lost sight of them for even 1 second on the cameras or undercover in person, they couldn't do anything about it because it's possible they dumped the goods before leaving and a false arrest was a huge hassle for the store, not worth the price of whatever goods are lost. So yeah, there is no actual punishment whatsoever so as soon as you find that out, and are underage, you can have at 'er if you have the balls to try it and you will very likely get away with it. I don't recommend it but it was quite shocking how little consequence there is for blatantly stealing stuff.

It's really not much unlike home/vehicle break-ins. They aren't investigated and there is no real consequence unless you are caught red-handed by the police which the chances of are basically zero in your typical 2-5 minute smash & grab.

I don’t know man. I’ve seen a few surveillance videos where the guard make some pretty insane searches and unusual requests, maybe that’s for the States. Some of these thieves are decent looking and will do basically anything to get out of prosecution.

The Huntington Hills Superstore liquor store say they're getting hit 2-4 times a week and sometimes more than once a day by groups of people. The group storms the store and one of them usually has a weapon of some sort, in one instance it was a broken bottle. Theft insurance for the these places must be getting crazy.

The 7-11 right by forest lawn high school finally shut down after more than 25 years of being there. I hung out with the owners cousins girl friends little sisters friend back in the day and she told me they were losing 10k plus a month from theft.
On a more real note lol, I was having lunch at Rang dong and talked to the owners son and he said they were losing over $10k a month from theft.

I had a hard time believing that too but its not that crazy when you think about it. Works out to about $330 a day and if you park out front for just 10 minutes during the lunch hour you'll see the amount of kids in there.

Pay first policy for a convenience store  How would that work?
When i was a kid i never knew exactly what i wanted when i went and the fun was walking around grabbing whatever looked good, my kids now are the same way lol We'll go up and down the aisles a couple times

Posted all the details i had already, talked to the pho place owners son who has been there for over 20 years and thats what he said. Not really super confidential info i dont think, they probably just asked the property owner why 7/11 is leaving after so many years

^^^How would that work though? Gas is simple because you have 4 items and its self serve, theres got to be thousands if not more of different items in a 7/11.

^^The fucked up part is thats probably the country with the least amount of theft worldwide. They probably went vending for convenience where as here we'd be doing so for security. No way in hell you could do that with a 7/11 though unless you do a giant one like killramos has envisioned:rofl:

Any one of these frequently hit places just needs to close the doors and become a stand/kiosk.

Still profits to be made.

From what I saw of the short lived posts, the owner followed what had been working for some other very small town liquor stores where the grab and run had been becoming popular.

Im such a moron lol I just re read my initial post about the 7/11 shutting down and it totally sounds like i was saying the pho place was losing out on $10k a month. My bad. 33 dine and dashes a day would be fuckin crazy lol
