View Full Version : How Much Electricity Per Month Does Your Household Consume?

Now that I'm living in an apartment / paying bills again, I'm doing my best to conserve and monitor my energy consumption.

How much electricity does your household consume each month? What factors contribute to that quantity (# of people, age of appliances, work from home, etc.) and do you think you could do better?

Number of people makes a difference, converting to LED lighting probably was the largest difference maker.

Mods - can you delete this thread so I can re-post?

I screwed up the poll options as I based it on average person's consumption rather than household.

Thanks!

House of four people, and we are between 750 and 1200 kWh. 1000 is a good average, so 250 I guess. I've been told that's high, but I haven't put a lot of effort into reducing it. Electricity is so cheap, why conserve?

It costs me way more to connect to the grid than I ever use in wattage.

Looks like around 875. Poll options are wack.

Typically around 1300kwh. As high as 1800 in the dead of winter because of the hottub and garage furnace.

I realized that after I posted. I saw Alberta averages 200 kWh but it's per person rather than per household.

Here in Spain we only use 125 kWh / month in our household, and it's winter, and I work from home, so I wasn't expecting consumption in Alberta to be THAT much higher.

I can't edit the poll options so I asked the mods to delete so I could re-post, if you read the thread.

Spain is a third world country. High energy use is directly correlated to awesomeness.

But do you have a standing freezer big enough to fit a whole cow inside?

Didn’t think so.

Honestly I think most of my energy usage is my furnace fan, that and my washer dryer I suppose?

Used 190 last bill. The majority of my bill is fees and not usage. I don't bother trying to manage my consumption too much. My last Enmax bill was about $54 and only $7 of that was actual usage charges.

Would 190 even power a trickle charger. Hahah

Hahaha no. I live in a condo and slowly replaced incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs as they burnt out. I don't actively try to limit use. I have a desktop PC and a 52 inch LCD TV on most of time I'm home unless I'm sleeping. I cook a lot at home too. My usage almost doubles in the summer as I run an air conditioner in my bedroom.

I goofed on my usage charge in my previous post, it should be $13. I was only looking at the first two weeks of the billing cycle. From October 16 to November 17 I used 197 kWh.

Pretty consistently at 350 kwh every month. Interested to see how much the Christmas lights use

800 in the winter, 1200 for the 4 months of summer because of the a/c and running both my furnace fans 24/7. Pretty consistent surprisingly.

Household of 2 adults, 2 kids (2 years + 2 months) and a dog. I don’t really think “per person” is a good indicator here but I guess that means 200-300 per person.

Curious how December will be with the Christmas lights too, but I doubt it will make a difference.

Not gonna lie, the 3 for all deal with atco really makes me not care about saving electricity. Still another 2 years to go of reckless electricity use

Really? Im curious how much mine would change but every bulb I have is LED and I use about 900kWh a month. I do have quite a few PC and server stuff running a lot.

Up to 1.21 gigawatts momentarily but the time duration varies a lot so I don’t know how to compute.

I would assume it will be opposite, if you have AC, summer's cost would be higher when 30C+ weather comes thru. Which city did you end up in Spain?

You'd be surprised how few Spaniards have or use AC. Houses / apartments are built of brick/concrete and typically have smaller windows and shutters to help manage the heat from the sun. Most tourist accommodation is poorly built and only used for the summer months so AC is more common in them. Spaniards are pretty good at being efficient with their energy consumption from what I've seen.

Heating is the bigger issue. We use natural gas as our apartment is newer but some places rely on bio-pellets, electric heaters, wood stoves, etc.

We were in Salou (on the coast near Barcelona) a couple of years ago and are now north of Madrid in a city called Valladolid.

1,427.74 KWH, or 1.4 jiggawatts over the last 30 days (Nov 24 to Dec 23) out here in Victoria. I imagine this is largely going to be the 2 electric HWT, 1 bedroom's electric in floor heat, and the washer/dryer which is run fairly regularly given the number of people in my house. Also homes here have shit for insulation so my gas bill is going to be fun.

Our "new" place right now our last months was 268, the place that we lived in last year was at 1175 for the same period.

2 adults, 1 kid in our household + dog.

I guess no electric baseboard heaters in the basement & electric garage heater make a huge difference. Will be interesting to see the March bill this year, thats when we hit our all time record last year of 2650.

Household total monthly average of 767kWhr over a one year period.
Peak was over 1450 during Feb, 2019 which was insanely cold and I have a 5kW garage heater. Lowest was only 541kWhr.

Most people burn wood on the island for sure. Wouldn’t want to pay carbon taxes on their heat or something.

People on the island have been using woodstoves as a sole heating source for a lot longer than taxes have been around. My parents have been for 30 years. It just doesn't get cold enough to justify hookup charges.

817kwh used over 62 days
So 400ish per month

2 adults.
Single family home (1 year old)

My wife is pregnant, trying to keep it comfortable inside, we are okay wearing extra layers.
The damn cold out here is different. It's a very nice sounding +4c outside right now but I'm chilled to the bone (even inside with the heat set at 20c) vs in Calgary I routinely wear a t-shirt and shorts inside throughout winter.

We have averaged around 750 kWh/month over the last 5 months and has increased monthly by nearly double since I’ve set the furnace to run continuously this summer, compared to our 2 year average. Continuous blower costs me $25 / month. Stay at home wife with 2 kidlettes in a small bungalow.

450kwh in the summer and 800 in the winter (den / lower level uses electric baseboard heaters. Solo but run lots of servers and 3d printers non stop

1200kwh last month. Nearly doubled from summer due to garage furnace, and electric heaters for auto waterers

I was fortunate as my house has nat gas running to it, it was added sometime in the 80s. My house used to have a word burning fireplace but the previous owners installed a gas insert. Several of the homes across the street from me don't have nat gas though, so they heat their house with an electric heat pump.

I think several people in my area use their wood burning fireplace. Often I can smell burning wood when I go for a walk, and the 'no open fires bylaw' means its probably not a backyard firepit.
