View Full Version : Home Gym Anyone?

After the recent birth of my son its become increasingly difficult to maintain a gym schedule.
I've been looking into getting a rack, lifting platform and a bench in the basement in order to continue in a routine and it'll be less time intensive.

Does anyone else have a home gym setup?
What did you use for flooring? I've read horse stall mats may be the way to go, has anyone used them?
Does anyone have the bowflex adjustable dumbells? How are they?

Cheers

I have a power rack that was recommended on here before (https://www.hyperfitness.ca/products/weight-lifting-package) and i have the Bowflex 552 Selectech dumbbells. I got them for $299 from Bestbuy on boxing day. I really like them but they only go up to 52lb each so keep that in mind when setting goals.

I am not using mats but I should be lol (my gym is in undeveloped basement) I'll watch this space for a good recommendation

Horse stall mats are perfect for it.

A power rack will be the item that takes up the most space, you can get folding ones, but don't do that if you have the space. They will integrate a pull up bar.

Build the lifting platform yourself, can use a horsemat for that as well, lots of DIY on the web.

Never used adjustable dumbbells. I typically have a small set of weights as your working range isn't that high.

I can take pics tonight, I am impressed by the quality tbh. It works well for what it is and looks quite great. I upgraded the plates and they're very durable. They delivery for a fee and he helped bring all the boxes into the basement but they do not offer assembly services.

I have a rack with bumper plates, no mats yet, because I have a low ceiling. I need to remove the raised sub-floor in the basement before buying some horsemats. I also have a single cable pulley setup, and dumbbells that go up to 30lb pairs. I typically only use it when I can't make it to the actual gym. I'd love to get more equipment, but lack the space, and the wife told me I can't move the stuff into the garage (because she uses it as well).

I got a wicked deal on a bells of steel commercial power rack. Got my bar and rubber plates from fitness depot years ago on Boxing Day. Adjustable dumbbells are powerblocks. Found a home gym/cable machine on Kijiji, I think the brand is northern lights.

Well the home gym is well underway.
Equipment has been purchased and I’ll be building a lifting platform/ finalizing the rest of the flooring in the room on the weekend.

Question, if I lay poly on top of the basement carpet to protect the carpet and then lay the rubber flooring/ platform on top, will I be causing any issues?

I've got a question for those of you that are into crossfit or HIIT and have moved to a home based routine since the pandemic. What does your gym set up really consist of? I've got a CNC and I am thinking of making some plyoboxes with logos or something because that doesn't require any extra equipment from what I already have but I don't know if that's even something the home user would rock because of the space they take up. Or maybe I missed the boat entirely? Its not a space I'm super familiar with because when I go to the gym I tend to stick with the standard cardio and lifting so I figured I'd pick beyond's brain for their home gym.
