I've always been a Subaru fan and never thought I'd be into trucks... until I got a chance to drive a few of the new Tacoma's and I was seriously hooked. I loved the feel behind the wheel and the functionality of a truck, so I bought my first truck!

I blame my friends for letting me drive their Taco's and taking me out into Waiperous.:dunno: In all seriousness, I always secretly wanted a 4runner or similar. Couldn't fit the bill for the Army Green 4runner (https://forums.beyond.ca/threads/411606-2020-Toyota-4Runner-TRD-Pro-in-Army-Green) but the Cement Grey is definitely my favorite color for the Tacoma!!

Congrats on the new Toy. Saw the first Cement Grey at North Hill Safeway parking lot just a few days ago and was very impressed. The best part of a Toy though is how well they hold up out in the bush right from stock. I agree they are a great vehicle to drive daily or bomb around out 4x4ing. Cheers

Awesome, I'd love to have one but i still can't get over the fact that they use drum brakes still, it probably doesn't make a huge difference in usage but still ridiculous.

I had an FJ and a Taco each for 3 years. Loved them both and miss them regularly. If they fit Child seats I would have probably kept both. Congrats on your purchase.

It doesn't make any difference at all because of what type of vehicle it is. There are 2-3 things in the Tacoma that bother most people, brakes isn't one.

So this finally got a height adjustable seat this year! What is the range of adjustment OP?

You did some photos for Toyota a while back right? With a red truck?

2020 finally a power seat  I think it goes up and down about 2". Not sure the exact but I saw a video of a guy comparing his hand at the base for comparison all the up was full hand length and then all the down went just more than half his hand.

Yup I did some shots for Toyota Canada (corporate) of the 2020 Barcelona Red back in December!! It played a part in how much I enjoyed driving it haha.. (Here's some of the Taco's / work/ some personal work that I shot: https://www.spencerhogg.com/Automotive/)

I test drove one late last year with the power seat and I have to say for the first time I finally fit in a Tacoma. I'm 6'2" with a long torso and my head used to touch the head liner but in the 20 it goes low enough so that I clear it comfortably now.

Nice!! I opted out of the sunroof (because it came with the leather package which I didn't really want that much) I'm about 5' 9" and feel like I have about 1 ft distance between top of my head and the roof which is nice. Feels more spacious than any of my past cars (all had sunroofs though.)

Few small goodies arrived this week in the mail!

Diode SL1 LED's for low-beams projector (currently a halogen looking yellow 4000k bulb in there)

I found the issue wasn't the headroom either. What is odd about the Tacoma is the short distance from floor to roof, making the seat really low to the ground. That means your feet are pointing straight out compared to other trucks where you sit up more with your legs at more of an angle down. If you're used to sports cars this is fine, but a lot of truck guys can't get used to it.

Ooohhh I can see that being a thing, and I came from my WRX. I have the seat position mounted all the way to the bottom and I feel most comfortable haha. I don't like feeling like I'm so high up above the wheel. (I've also had Status Racing seats that were literally on the floor of my WRX and that was the polar opposite - I hated being that low, could hardly see hahah). One thing I like that I never experienced / felt before is lumbar support in the lower back. Very nice, I have it outwards about 25% of the way and find my back feeling good on longer drives (we did 3 hours into BC last week.)

I love the Cement too haha, definitely my favorite color!

After 2 STI's and 1 WRX in manual, I went for the automatic with the Taco. If I ever get another "fast" car again I'd only go manual, but for the commutes to work (NE Cornerstone -> Quarry Park) I got real tired of feathering the clutch for an hour at a time each day :( So much more comfortable now haha.

Do it!! It's funny the way mutual interests can bring friends together. Some guys I haven't hung out with for a long time suddenly chatting with daily now, which is so awesome. My one friend on the far right (cement also) traded in his STI for a Tacoma too!!

Light dusting of snow last night and the Taco handled well. Definitely takes some change in driving habits compared to the WRX haha!

The 4 amber lights aka "raptor lights" knock offs? I'm not sure, I know they come factory on the bigger trucks (I believe actually required by law due to their width??) but this is just merely cosmetic haha. I can't afford that 100K raptor life!!

But I promise you they're not nearly as bright and overpowering as they look in that shot above, it's just because it's a longer exposure and slow shutter in the dark. When the OEM halogen's are on then you can hardly see them. They're just 2 single little diode's on a small board in there. (This shot is just the DRL's, and you can kind of tell, they look extremely bright, way brighter than they really are.)

SS3 Fogs are DOT and SAE approved. (Fully legal) Their other lights are not.

Haha my friend told me "You know the Taco' is a small truck and those are meant for wide trucks by law" hahah but I love it haha!! Sorry thought you were maybe thinking I slapped on some super bright LED's and blinding people haha...

I just took a quick look because I thought the box says "for off road" but I found on the website under legal info it says:

"When installed as a pair and aimed in accordance with your state's regulations, the Driving White pattern meets SAE J581 standard as a Driving/Auxiliary High Beam Light, and the Fog pattern meets SAE J583 standard as a Foglamp, for legal on-road use."

The ones I got come with Tacoma mounting hardware and the brackets to fit the bumper etc. but I'll check to see if they're adjustable too because that would be ideal! I used to drive alot up to Three Hills in the dark at night and morning in my WRX, I used to have Morimoto single LED fogs in there and found them help alot with seeing in the ditch (they were very wide.)

I'll fly my drone up 25ft above the truck and take some photos to show the light output!

I also have a 30" LED tucked into my lower grill, so i have a pile of (illegal) light. Really only use it when in BC and driving back roads.. No tickets yet!

Thanks man! It's a 2018 MT-09! I had a Ninja 300 and a R6 before it (and the R6 was flashed by Vcyclenut full Akro) and I love the MT-09 the most in comparison. It's got so much power without as much strain on your wrists and back. Only negative I have is the wind, because there's literally no wind protection at all haha. You can slap on a big windscreen though! Been saving $ to buy the Akro exhaust for it, $1,300 CDN :(

I'm really excited because I measured before I bought the Taco and the bike will fit in the back with the tailgate down. (Can get a tailgate extender but I'll most likely just strap it in good and leave it down.) Can drive out to BC and enjoy the bike in the mountains without the boring straight and flat 3 hour riding just to get there.

Time for a ramp to get it into the back. I enjoyed my FZ-09, but always chose my CBR over it for city riding.

Finally installed the Diode Dynamics SS3 Foglights. Install was a breeze plug n play with a nice adjustable bracket that mounts in behind the bumper. I chose to install via the fender liner, (3 clips, 1 bolt) and squeeze arm in behind. Haven't had much chance to test them in dark yet but so far I notice the throw is just very far / long (can see them illuminate the ditch quite a ways ahead on Stoney / North QE2 so far I've noticed.) I'll post some good comparison shots soon.

Went for a nice drive up to a place called Ya Ha Tinda Ranch, north/ west of Sundre / Red Deer area. It was a pretty nice driving with a good mix of snow. Some areas 2ft of snow and others completely dry dirt/ gravel!

Had my friend drive while I hopped in another's to shoot some pics!

When are you lifting your truck?

At this point only a month and a half of ownership, not for a while honestly. I'm not overly interested in lifting it yet, big lifted trucks were always the opposite appeal of trucks, the thing I disliked the most about visually, I never liked "big lifted trucks" that much. BUT, everyone keeps telling me once I find a need for it out off-road / camping in the trails, then I'll want it. So I suppose after this summer if I get out enough and find myself wanting more ground clearance (if any of the trails here pose such a requirement) then I might do it.

New wheels arrived this week, though! Just need some tire suggestions now. KO2's? General Grabbers? Geolanders?

Duratracs and Coopers come on sale once a month at Ctire for 25% off so significantly cheaper then the KO2's.

Lifted trucks drive like crap most of the time. I have been happy with the grip of my Grabber AT/X but the wear rate is very poor on my truck. I’m at 24998km and the front tires are around 35% and the rear around 45-50% (have rotated them). About 10% towing mileage in there, plus I’m missing quite a few studs now too.

Honestly, im still pretty doubtful of that. My stock taco was in and out of the north Ghost for years just as much as the big lifted guys when i used to ice climb, and tons of backcountry camping. The only thing i wrecked was my trailer wiring as the pre-2016 tacos had their wiring below the body instead of in bumper.. Sure if you're hucking it up roads in Waiparous for the sake of getting it up there, but for 98% of your camping, it'll never be a problem

Duratracs and Coopers come on sale once a month at Ctire for 25% off so significantly cheaper then the KO2's.

I wouldnt trade my current Cooper AT3 XLTs for Duratracs if you paid me... WAY quieter, similar winter grip and better tread wear.

Usually those that have negative thoughts towards the AT3s are referring to the old model.. not the current one slipt into 4S, LT and XLT. Krave seems to love theuir Geolanders as well.

I had K02s on my F150 and now I have wild peaks on my Tacoma.

I think the k02s were a bit better in the winter but the wild peaks were worth the savings. I would buy them again as the performance difference was minimal. Wear rate seems to be about the same too. Both sets we C load rated.

I have KO2s on my F150 as summer tires, however I did do a winter on them, and I thought they performed pretty good except on glare ice. I would run them again.

Week 3 of working from home / social distancing and it's given me more time to enjoy working on my YouTube hobby and filming videos. Got around to installing some Diode Dynamics SL1 LED's into the lowbeam projectors and although I can't see I notice an improvement in terms of the throw distance, I notice the cut-off remained the exact same (sharp horizontal line, no skewed light, so they're installed and aimed properly.)

Still have to wait because I don't think I'll be able to order and get tires installed + mounted right now during this pandemic. I've decided either KO2's or General Grabber's.... (primarily for the low budget price and good daily driving / commuter reviews.)

If you have a few minutes today and wanna check-out my YouTube videos I'd be very thankful for the support! (If you leave me a comment on the Vid. it might help improve my chances of listing on the right side recommended bar!!)

I disagree, I like the letters out. One of those things though, you either like it or don't. Also can be vehicle dependant but this pulls it off IMO.

I wasn't sure about the letters but I kinda of just went with it because I don't see it very often (I only know two other guys with it) and I actually liked it even more than I expected I might haha!

I realized keeping stock size 16" without a lift and going with an ATX even stock size like 265, it just fills everything up perfectly (even a little rub actually, they said I could fix with an alignment adjustment) but it just looks so much more aggressive in person versus the stock haha. Super happy with everything so far!

I've met some pretty cool friends so far since owning the Tacoma, got out a week or so ago for a 'socially distant' photo-shoot/ hangout with my friend who also has a Cement Grey. (This was just before I got my new wheels, which was the unfortunately luck we had, but we rolled with it anyways.) His edit is pretty damn epic compared to mine haha but eh I'm just workin' on my YouTube pushing along and almost to 10k Subscribers which is super cool! I did a little video coming soon of the wheels being installed that I'm very proud of can't wait to share.

When I got the new tires installed they were rubbing pretty bad when turning. I finally got sick of it last night and decided to see if I remove the mudflaps if it would help or not, (we didn't think it would be enough space), but to my surprise it seems to have been just enough and now there's no more rub!! Pretty stoked about that, I wish I had done it sooner ;D

I bought the truck new, never had them. New truck bought new doesn't have them, and I STILL don't have them.

It is a cheaper ticket than most out there, and no demerits. If I get pulled over and turn on the charm, squeeze my tits together, they usually find something lesser to give me a ticket for, and this one is fine by me.

still a bit of a dickhead move, regardless of fines or not. Having a $300 driverside window taken out on a highway cause of that, I got no love for missing mudflaps. Also loved driving home without one dodging storms for 2 hours and losing my hearing..

You could likely dremel down the spot its rubbing on the flap, since it's not an integral part. Talk to the guys at Krave, i'm sure they'd tell you where to shave.

As I scroll through Krave's Instagram in search of an optimal solution, there's not a single vehicle with mudflaps on the front  :dunno:

Edit; Not even the ones they built for sale at Cochrane Toyota have flaps!

No idea what to do LOL. There's not much in the spot to shave down or it just becomes a hole, which I guess it fine, but then will just collect dirt and such.

The rear flaps are still on, ofcourse.

I've had two windshields taken out by dickheads with massive mudders and no mud flaps.

Kijho
08-03-2020, 11:18 AM
So no mudflaps for 1 month now and I don't have any chips or dings around the lower fender area. I think the fenders themselves actually do most of the work, because I do have significant amount of chips on the plastic black fenders, even with the mudflaps though, so I think most rocks are hitting up in that spot.

With that said, the plan is to put the mudflaps back on soon once I get a chance to dremel them down and find a way to make them fit better without rubbing. My dremel crapped out 2 weeks ago so I'm kinda waiting for a decent sale to buy a new one.

Upgraded the reverse lights to some Prolightz PL1 T15 bulbs, I really like these ones...

I also got a new dashcam unit sent to me in the mail, this time from a new company to me called Vantrue, they sent me out their N4 Model to do some reviews / marketing photos for them. It's a 3 channel dashcam which is really cool, geared more towards uber / taxi's to record inside the vehicle. The unit itself is pretty cool though with one of the widest FOV's I've seen on a dashcam, 1440p, and 1080 interior + 1080 rear. I'll have some example footage in a week or so of this!

Got out into the mountains this past weekend and really enjoyed taking the Taco' down some of those gravel roads down behind Canmore (Spray Lakes) etc. and I realize comparing it to the WRX is like apples to oranges but the truck just handles those gravel roads so nicely, especially since getting the new tires. It's still bumpy, but it's alot less 'jolting' if that makes sense and I don't feel like I'm about to break or damage something haha... (has anyone beat my record on 4 front lips ripped off yet??)

We hiked a spot that we had attempted last Summer and had to turn back on because of downpour rains once we got about half way up (which when you're determined to climb a mountain, is such a defeated feeling, it really sucks turning back after so much determination) so I'm really stoked on completing this one!!

Spray lakes road has been in brutal shape this year too with the amount of traffic on it. Do love taking the taco on it though!

What other mountains on your list?

I drove up spray lakes this weekend in the RS and it sure was sketchy. Usually I bomb down it

Sidewall is the key, and your taco has it.

The north section was so bad for a bit, but then it got a little better in the truck thankfully, very comfortable and also so nice being higher up!

Next on the list (next week) will be Devil's Thumb, we didn't attempt that last summer but it was on the list. After that, Tower of Babel, but not sure if that will be this year or not!

Last summer we did the usual Hai Ling, EEOR, Yamnuska, and we also did Three Sisters Trail which kind of wraps around and brings you up on the more East side of the mountains there. That one was awesome BUT sketchy, very sketchy in some parts. The trail head for that begins down on Spray Lakes too, there's a whole bunch of sticks jammed into the ground where it begins and you're climbing up / over big rock (perhaps a old rock slide) for a good first few km's.

We're starting some planning for 2021, if all goes to plan, we want to do a 2 week road trip camping down in Colorado. There's a smaller YouTube / Tacoma group we might link up with from down there and do some hikes / camping!

So many cool thins coming in the next few weeks...

RA Motorsports bed racks and custom made molle panel
Tent is still TBD, I'm trying to kind of find a low budget basic option. They're all so expensive

New headlights coming maybe in a week they're still being made.

Installing another set of SS3's with Diode's new ditch brackets today / this weekend also.
I have a set of Diode's SS6 lights that I might put facing rear or sides on the bed racks. Also got oem style switches for interior.

I wonder if just the mass increase in people going out hiking and camping this Summer has really taken a toll on that road, and perhaps budget cuts on maintenance? It was the worst I'd ever seen!

i think its both, the number of people is insane on that road this year.

You should add Indefatigable and Temple to your list if you're banging out Babel

Babel lookin like a big challenge hahaha, I think we'll need to find climbing helmets, not that we'd be climbing, but I've heard the rocks falling from the scramble is suuuper sketch!? Ah man once you do one you're addicted though hahaha

You should really be rolling a helmet for any scramble these days. See the death on Yamnuska that was really more due to falling rock due to others. You definitely want one for Babel as you're in the shooting alley the whole way up

Installed the new Diode Dynamics kit for the SS3 Ditch Lights. Same lights are the foglights but they came out with a nice simple and low profile bracket that mounts to the hood for bottom pillar lights. I spent probably close to 10 hours on this one and I think it's my most favorite editing sequence to date. I basically uninstalled the old video software I was using so that I could really force myself to learn Premiere Pro and now I'm saying to myself what I think everyone does who makes the switch.."Why didn't I do this years ago!!"

Went and explored a bit last night, and the new Sony 85mm lens has really motivated me to want to shoot more. I realized everything I shot is in portrait, but this lens just feels like it neeeeeds to be shot in portrait haha, everything just looks soo good!!
