Just out of curiosity, how many O&G professionals have been contacted by Yemen Oil & Gas Corporation? (https://www.yemenoilandgas.com/)

The website looks legit, but their recruitment process so far seems to be a bit odd compared to what I'm used to.

I was contacted by these guys about 30 days after making an application on ZipRecruiter to a role posted by a recruiter (Role is out of Houston, but requires initial training in the London). Had to provide my CV and fill out a questionnaire. It didn't have anything in there requesting super personal info, so I completed it and sent it back.

In the following email, they requested I give them a call in the UK to confirm my identity. I called their UK #, but was transferred to an automated system and didn't bother leaving a message.

Today, these guys reached out again (apparently the acting HR Director in the UK) with a "Statement of Employment" aka Employment Offer and asking me to sign and return via email within 3 days of the dated email & document.

The weird thing is other than the website, I can't find much more on these guys. They're non-existent on LinkedIn.

Curious to see if any other Beyonders who're O&G Professionals might have been contacted by these guys? I wanted to verify if this could be legit or just another case of social engineering/ID theft or something.

Thanks GQBalla,

I looked up the "Whois" as well and thought it might be a potential scam. Their website, however, was also just launched in 2019. If this company is truly affiliated with the Yemeni government, it's quite possible that their domain is relatively new. Their "Branding" (logos etc.) are correct for a Yemeni government-affiliated company.

I tried looking up a directory of companies registered at the address they have listed on their website (in London I mean); however, complete information cannot be easily found on the Willis Building on 51 Lime Street. Their listed address in Yemen, however, jives with this being Yemen General Oil & Gas Corporation which is Yemeni government entity.

Could be legit, but I'm betting within a couple weeks you'll be asked to pay a deposit or costs towards getting your visa or some such shit.

I've worked in Yemen for a decade and I've never heard of this company.

I'm unaware of any ministerial subsidiaries with offices outside of the Middle East - I do not see why they'd have any in London or the US.

It seems like a very well-done scam to me but I don't always know what's going on with the politics in Yemen so ya never know.

This might deserve its own thread....

I'm looking at expat jobs in the middle East right now and everyone seems to want 15+ years experience. Plus I'm not sure if it's challenging for Canadians to work abroad or not. Working in the US has been incredibly more challenging (with some job postings saying, essentially, if you don't have US citizenship don't bother applying). The UK seems the same way, attempting to stay hopeful for Norway but hard to say.

Are intermediate experiences really going to be able to get expat positions or are these roles typically highly senior individuals (in your experience/opinion)?

msommers - your best bet of getting an expatriate assignment when you don't have international experience is either with EPC's or operators. From my experience, most of the Middle Eastern companies generally hire many third-country expatriates for the intermediate and junior roles (India, Pakistan, Philipines, Malaysia etc.) The other variable is your field of expertise.

Why the fuck would anyone consider working for “Yemen” anything?

This. Two decades ago expat assignments were a lot easier to get. I was lucky to catch one when I did. In general, there is a big push to develop locals into being job-qualified and countries don't offer visas for foreign workers like they used to. Since 2008, there has been a big rotation to cheaper labour from Asia as well.

Unless you're in management or a specialist with a unique skillset I'd say it's generally tough these days for professional roles. That said, for teaching English and that sort of stuff there are lots of great opportunities.

It's treated me well :dunno:

JDMMAN: that is exactly what happens to me. I have been contacted by their lawyer and ask for some not critical info but I am dragging my feet to respond.Have you been offered the supply chain administrator position as well?

Don't you still have stuff in Yemen now but can't grab it?

I mean money would have to be really good to move there, but thats like moving to any shitty small town in Canada for Oil people did it for the money.

Unless of course you wanted to make change.

PSRpearland - yup, however, that's not the role I applied for. So not sure if this is a social engineering/phishing scam.

I went back thru my application history and found that indeed I did apply for a position posted on a job board back in Nov 2019. In March after answering a series of questions, etc.... I received a job offer that required I reside in London for 7months of training, starting in May 2020. I did not reply back since preparations for the current epidemic took over my schedule.
