Looking for a good performing desktop PC that can do a little bit of everything. Word processing, surfing, moderate gaming performance. Would also like to be able to have the option to upgrade components in the future. Any recommendations? Would like to keep price below $1500.

I’d like to stick with a windows computer. What do you guys think about something like this:
https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp-pavilion-gaming-pc-black-intel-core-i7-9700-1tb-hdd-256gb-ssd-16gb-ram-gtx-1660-english/14417635?icmp=Recos_3across_tp_sllng_prdcts&referrer=PLP_Reco

Can these units typically be upgraded down the road?

Not always - these compact cases certainly dont make it easy.

Also, with only a 300watt PSU, its certainly no power house - although PC's have gotten very electrically efficient over the years.

Good advice, thanks. Is something like this better?:

My knowledge of computers is pretty basic. Our desktop does get heavy usage, work from home during day, entertainment at night. So performance is somewhat important, but at the same time I want ease of use.

That would be a better choice, yes.

Youre best to look at the games you play and pick a PC to ensure maximum performance from them. Depends entirely on that.

Ie. not just bare minimums - unless of course you dont care.

If your games are lightweight, then even this might be over kill.

Memoryexpress is your best bet. Don't buy a computer from bestbuy it'll be overpriced trash. Even pre-built at Memoryexpress are better value.

This is 1600$ and would be pretty good if you don't wanna try and spec your own parts. Though if you want a monitor and such as well you might have to step down a hair.

You could do this and have some leftover for a monitor as well:

A790 link is good, thanks. I will admit, even with all the info, building a PC seems like a daunting task. pheoxs thanks for the links, will definitely consider those units. I have dual monitors, mechanical keyboard all the peripherals already, so free's up some space for the actual tower.

No no. Pick the parts from the site and get MemEx to build it for you (they only charge $75).

Man if you're concerned the actual assembly, buy all the parts and give them to me and I'll put it together for you for free. I'm so bored with this lockdown, you'll be doing us both a favour.

I was just going to say the same thing, complete with free lysol wipedown after construction lol

Damn, that's better service than I would have offered  I would have only gone as far as wiping down finger prints haha

Memex does include warranty for errors in assembly with that $75. It's a good value.

After you use logical increments and PC part picker to choose the parts, use shopbot to verify prices on all the parts, get your price beats from memex, they'll pay for assembly no problem.

I actually really like the process of choosing desktop build parts. I find it appealing. Just wish I had the need to do it more.

I learned to build a computer at home from help here and YouTube videos. It's surprisingly easy to assemble but I would look into compatibility of parts particularly with the motherboard, ram timing/size and CPU chip.

Now upgrading anything is pretty easy and can do it all myself!

Thanks for the offers and advice. I put together a quick noob build (no idea what I'm doing) but gotta start somewhere... Thoughts on where to go from here? Don't know if I feel much farther ahead than going the pre-assembled route? :dunno:

If you mentioned what games you played, it would go a long way in optimizing the rig for it.

ah yes, good point. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but it's nice to have the option to occasionally. Overwatch, GTA, that new Microsoft Flight sim looks cool.

You probably wont need the fans because the case will have some and the are usually more then adequate. I would definitely recommend getting an aftermarket cpu cooler. Otherwise solid build!

You might be able to get a bit more power going with an AMD cpu at that point then you can put a bit more into the gpu. 6gig of ram on the gpu might not be good enough for next gen.

Juts buy a prebuilt like a dell, PC tech is going so damn slow, you could buy the lowest spec new pc and it'll still last you 5+years with what you're doing..., cheaper than your cellphone.

Speaking of Flight sim, Microsoft released computer specs.

https://www.pcgamer.com/amp/microsoft-flight-simulator-system-requirements/

CPU: Ryzen 7 Pro 2700X / Intel i7-9800X
GPU: Radeon VII / Nvidia RTX 2080
VRAM: 8GB
RAM: 32GB
HDD: 150GB (SSD recommended)
Bandwidth: 50 Mbps

Is this doable for around $1k?

Thats going to be what, $4K by the time you add the main board, 1-2TB SSD and 1000watt PSU?

I think you could do it for just over 2k and 1tb ssd is kinda silly. 500 is lots or get a media drive. And 1k PSU is definitely not needed for a single 2080, a good 6-700W PSU is plenty

1k 2080 GPU, 420 for 3700x CPU, 250 for 32gb ram, 200 MOBO, 80 case, 150 psu, 100 for 500gb ssd.

2200$ plus tax, OS, and peripherals

Edit: I guess probably a cpu cooler, I think the 3700x doesn't come with one.

Ahh. I think I was thinking of the thread rippers that don't ship with a cooler because your are expected to use your own
