View Full Version : Has anyone purchased from Bring A Trailer?

Curious if anyone has bid/won a vechicle from bringatrailer? Found something I've been wanting for a while now and I want to possibly bid on it, just not sure how the whole process works. Car is in the US so with getting it here, plus the OoC inspection etc it may not be worth it but I haven't had much luck in Canada.

TIA

I have a few friends that have purchased from there and one that has sold a vehicle into the USA.

For the ones that purchased, it was fairly straight forward and really no different than purchasing a car out of the USA. They paid, arranged shipping , paid duty/taxes, did the out of country inspection and they were good to go. For what it's worth, I find the cars on BAT sell for a premium over what they would typically sell for in a standard private car sale. I'm seeing some crazy high prices for E36 M3's with high mileage and not the greatest of shape.

Nope, but they also don’t accept any old shitbox. There’s lots of high mile “driver” cars that go through there, just look at the s2000 history.

Apparently one way that drastically improves your chances of getting your car accepted for a listing there is to go no reserve. They’re a bit more discerning if you want to put a reserve on your auction. Or so I hear.

Yea some of the no mile units go crazy. There was a 2000 (I think) plain old Ram 1500 with under 1000miles that brought around 23k USD. Seen a few Honda's go for crack money as well.

So you register for the site then have to apply to sell in auction? I'm assuming they only auction a certain amount per week too?

I did see Travis Barker sell a car or two on here as well. I'm personally waiting for Jon Voight's used car to come up for auction.

Transfer money. Hire transport. Meet transport truck @ border (Sweetgrass, Montana). Maybe wait to transport car if possible until border restrictions are lifted.

Not personally but the person I contract to yes. The issue is it would involve a lot more cost than someone picking it up themselves, as well as I feel like they’d expect me to absorb some of the costs if I mention it.

Nope looked at a ton of options and every single one had some sort of issue that didn’t make me feel excited (too much money for what it is, too old, too far away, chassis too small for my height). Combined with the fact that it’s going to be another 1-2 years before we get another road course and I don’t have a garage it was making less and less sense. I also would have had to commit to no street car and just truck and trailer which made me slightly sad.

Easiest way might be to build your own, Exocet has a very strong proposition at a very reasonable price. There's at least one road legal one in Alberta too.

Interesting. Are many of those made street legal?

To be honest I have absolutely no idea, but after personally going through the process of making a 100% homebuilt car street legal, I can't see why not. It would just have to comply with the Vehicle Equipment Regulation (https://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Regs/2009_122.pdf) and pass an OOP inspection. For registration, tell them it's a replica of a boxster or a zonda or whatever you think it looks like when you squint really hard. They don't seem to be terribly picky about that. Just make sure for the OOP that it has all the necessary reflectors and side markers and all that other fun stuff. Reflective tape and penny lights from Princess Auto are your friend.

It’s an absolute riot, and I haven’t even put either of the sets of stickier tires on yet. Very cheap to run compared to my CTS-V and C5Z as well. Only planning minimal mods as it’s so well set up, add cruise control, engine remap and maybe a mechanical LSD down the road.

I would assume the owner of that car is aware of BaT and would probably be doing this if it was the best course of action.

BAT adds a lot of dilutives and complication to a transaction versus Kijiji.

If someone wants to arb BAT and Kijiji on their own time that’s their prerogative.

The BaT angle is interesting.

I have three originally-sold-in-the-US cars that will eventually go on there. I assume bringing a vehicle back to the states in that circumstance is much easier than importing a Canadian-sold vehicle.
finboy - you could just offer to take care of the import process for the buyer?

1st gen camaro's look terrible without the rear spoiler IMO.

Seeing how you could potentially sell for 100K+ USD would be tempting. Do you have yours on the road yet? You have to at least get some seat time this year before getting rid of it haha.

I don’t know that I would want to deal with the whole process, but taking care of some of the documentation could help things.

I think the big hurdles are
-prove title and explain how that works to Americans
-prove all emissions items are in place
-secure letters from American division of manufacturer that car is legal for us market

Who knows, my car is worth *maybe* 15k in canada on a good day, that BAT tax would likely net another 5-8k if it was in the US, but it seems like that Canadian barrier might be a hard one for buyers to get over.

Don't forget that after the vehicle has been imported to Canada, it's a Canadian car. To bring it back into the states, the buyer would need to pay tax on it. This happened to my BIL that moved up here, imported his car, then wound up selling it in canada before he moved back down a year later to avoid paying tax on it each time he crossed the border :nut:
