The U.S. Administration has now officially imposed a ban on issuing certain categories of new work visas (namely, L-1A, L-1B, H1B, J-1 and L-2) until December 31, 2020.

Also found this:

The executive order bans the issuance of visas, and the admission of:

H-1B and H-4

H-2B

J-1, J-2 (intern, trainee, teacher, camp counselor, au pair, or summer work travel program)

L-1, L-2

They advise against travel outside of the USA if you are already living in the USA with one of these visas. Unsure what it means if you already have one and have to go there, I have a L-1B.

Edit:Canadians have been confirmed exempt from any nonimmigrant visa restrictions.

However I dont know about your experience at the border but I find those border guards dgaf where you are from.

As you mentioned, this only applies for non-Canadians and for new visas. Singaporeans are also exempt.
You can still come and go as you please under L1B currently, provided your L1B doesn't expire while you are out of country. If you have renewed prior to the ban, but still expires prior to Dec 31, 2020 then you won't be able to re-enter into the US under L1 status. So if your L1 expires on August 1, you can come and go as you please until August 1, but after that you'll have to either stay in the US or enter under visitor status until Dec 31.

You don't leave and hope ICE doesn't find you. Mexicans do it all the time.

Sounds like relocating for work is off the table for this year. I don't see many business trips to Houston with the recent outbreaks and shutdowns/lockdowns being put back into place.

I received a notice from our work's immigration lawyers a few weeks ago and it did not specify exemptions for Canadians, so that's good to hear. Mind you, we are applying under an E2 class so it's not affected by the current mandate. BUT who knows what's going to happen in the near future. CRAZY TIMES.

Does anyone know if the Calgary Consulate is back open for interviews?

I’ve had zero issues going back and forth over these last 4 months - mind you I have an E2 visa.

Flying or driving?

Mostly driving, flying once.

Also to note, my aunt flew to Phoenix the other day and apparently you don’t need to be essential to cross the border when taking a flight, who knew? Loop hole.

Last night I had read that crossing borders via air is not required to be "essential" travel too.

Did CBSA give you any grief or did you get any check ups re: self-isolation?

They phoned 4 times whenever I come back to Canada, I just tell them I’m an essential worker up here too and they don’t follow up.
