No doubt US banning Huawei has something to do with it. MediaTek (Taiwan) now in front of Foxconn (USA Apple).

Its was a little silly to think that Foxconn would get all of the residual business. Should the USA ban MediaTek? Amazon Fire tablets tend to use MediaTek chips, so it might anger Bezos.

MediaTek worth about $40 Billion. Pretty much entirely by melting sand and selling silicon chips at $10 to $20 apiece.

MediaTek gets TSMC to manufacture their 5nm chips.

FYI Literally no one uses actual sand to produce silicone chips (silicon and silicone are two different things) because sand has too many impurities so they have to mine quartz.

I think you still have silicon and silicone backwards there.

Silicon = Naturally occurring occurring element found on the periodic table

Silicone = Synthetic polymer

Silicon is what is used for semiconductors.

Quartz/silicon is literally what this planet is made of. Its 900x more common than carbon.

A high quality deposit just means that you don't have to do as much post-processing. But there are plenty of deposits out there. You can pretty much make *any sand* into a 20nm chip at reasonable quantity, but you use the high purity stuff for the new 7nm to maximize yields.

Silicon is literally just like printing money.

Looks like Trump's ban has mixed result.....

Mediatek (unless something changes) may deliver 180M 5G chips to Huawei, made by TSMC. TSMC will win either way.

Qualcomm after getting settlement ($1.8B) from Huawei from patent suit is now begging US gov to let them in on that cake without losing it all to MediaTek.

TLDR, money talks.

No backdoor deals. Still no chips for Huawei.
