My moto g7 play is bogging down. Upgrade is imminent. Thinking pixel 4a, but the various moto g8 plus, g8 power etc models seem worthy of consideration. Or what else? Want as close to stock android as possible. Under $500.

Telus EPP has the S20 for free. But that means that you would have to upgrade from your 3G public mobile network that you are so fond of.

Edit:. Promo off. Now S20 is $16 x 24 months +$120 bring it back option.

It has occurred to me that I could get a phone through Telus. My monthly payment would go up a lot. Looks like it would go from $56.25 to $99.75 for the USA plan is need. Plus any device cost. Suppose if the device was $0, that's only an extra $500/yr....

The_Rural_Juror

Don't you expense your phone bill anyways? It's $63 for 20gb on the EPP. $60 for 10gb. $85 for 10gb us-can plan.

isn't that one $95?

Nope. 10% disc. You could do the $60, 10gb plan and add us calling for $15. Then do the roam like home thing when you need to Delaware.

It's actually 10gb at LTE then anything over is 3G.

This is my exact plan it’s great.

And now that you are double meat subbing it with your plan. You can even get an iPhone.

3G speed should be around 3 Mbps. I just got about 300 on my test. Bonus is that you don't have to wait 2 weeks to get your invoice.

Sure did. I do have to admit that the speeds are inconsistent. 227 just now. Are you guys so skeptical of 2009 tech?

The 4a is very strong bang for buck. Of the phones listed, I'd go for that instantly because everything about the 4a is better tech, ie: better performing, faster etc.

Its really frustrating that only the top tier phones get Qi charging.
My S9 just died a watery death so looking at mid range phones the 4a and Samsung A51 look great but no Qi.

If you're okay with refurbished phones, you can find a Razer Phone 2 for under $500. I've had one for a year now and I like it. I can't find new ones for less than about $800 right now though so it's either used or nothing.

I think it's an old phone, and the camera sucks. The display is nice though, the battery seems to last a long time, the speakers are good and it's pretty heavy if you ever need to brain a fucker. And your emails will come in at the exact same time as your computer, no sooner, no later. That's an SKR guarantee.

Taxes and duty is only showing up as $31 usd so this is a good deal. Pixel 5 is expected at $799 CDN and 4a 5G is $679.

Hope nothing goes wrong though as you will have to deal with samsung usa support as I found out year ago buying a gear fit from BH.

The sweet spot for phone value is always in the $600-700 range. Relatively speaking it's a good deal because high end phones are all closer to $2000 these days, and the typical user experience isn't much different, but it's still a significant amount of money.

Phones like the Pixel 4a, upcoming Pixel 5, Galaxy S10 Lite (or upcoming S20 Lite/FE), etc. are all going to be your best bang for the buck by far. Something like the S10 Lite is only $600, pretty close to what you want to pay and is extremely well reviewed. Samsung's latest UI/overlay is also dramatically improved from years past and pretty much just serves to add functionality to stock android now.

Think pixel 4a will be on sale for black Friday? Be nice to save $50 from the $479 regular price if possible.
Moto G8 lineup seems pretty good, but a full step down for ~$290.

Well Kiddies, I didn't see any sales for the pixel 4a for Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Before I go crazy and just buy my phone for pull price, I'll give everyone one more chance to talk me into a telus plan. Or a plan with anyone else.

Here's my math. I need unlimited long distance to the USA, PLUS unlimited calling back to canada when I'm in the USA Not a whole lots of data, but some. My Current cellphone plan gives me all that with "shitty public mobile" and costs me $56/mo.
Going to telus, I could use the EPP and get the $95 Can-US peace of mind plan for what, $85? And on top of that I'd pay $15/mo for 24 months for the Pixel 4a. So my monthly cost would be $100?

So over a 24 month term, I'm paying (100-56)x24 = $1056 for that phone? Is that math right? Doesn't seem like a good value when I could buy the phone outright for $479.

Zero interest in a Samsung phone, or any iphone, or any "flagship" phone. Don't even bring that shit around here, The_Rural_Juror

There are a fuckton of wicked no-name chinesium phones (not Huawei) that have good mid range specs for cheap. Got my wife this last year and she has been very happy. I have an even cheaper model as a backup phone.

https://www.amazon.ca/UMIDIGI-Fingerprint-Unlocked-Smartphone-Breathing/dp/B07Y9ZPT73/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1QLCJG4MZTM7E&dchild=1&keywords=xiaomi+phone&qid=1607453596&sprefix=xia%2Caps%2C234&sr=8-5

300$ for a global phone that will work on most major networks - but one should confirm. We in North America are way behind the times in terms of mobile technology. "not compatible with CDMA carriers ( Like Sprint or Verizon for example )"

With apples and samdungs, you are paying a lot extra for just the name.

If you have Shaw "Fibre" internet at home...

Buy a Pixel 4a with the $0 plan. It's $20/month with a $20 activation fee. So $260 for the phone. Don't bother using the sim card, or use it in one of your kids phones.

The best price/performance ratio are usually on tech items you have not heard of. Unlocked global phones running Android 9 or 10 are the way to go.

I considered the 6a for wife, but it looks like it still has all the same issues as the 6, along with a crappy 60hz screen, no camera upgrade vs Pixel 2,3,4,5 and no wireless charging.
The 6 was $699 just a week ago, so unless you really want the pixel buds (which are only semi decent - got a free set with my 6) the 6 (with all its own issues) seems like a better choice.
