View Full Version : Funny Registration Issue

Kind of an odd situation has played out - my wife wrote off her car in February or March this year, insurance paid out and they kept the vehicle.

In September, my wife received a new sticker and registration for the vehicle and it shows as “rebuilt” status. She claims she never signed up for auto-renewal (I am doubtful on that but let’s leave that alone for now).

How could she have been issued new registration on a vehicle that was surrendered to insurance? How would it have a rebuilt title without the registered owner (my wife based on the fact that registration was issued in her name) showing the inspection documents to a registrar in order to re-register it after the accident?

Is this just a minor, relatively common clerical error? It seems like it opens up a huge window of opportunity to fraudulently claim that the car has been stolen and that we are still the owners.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not worried in the slightest, I am just very curious how this could’ve happened. I am also curious if the insurance company actually rebuilt the vehicle and sold it or if it went to Copart or something similar and somebody else rebuilt it, and if so, did the government issue two valid registrations for the same vehicle?

AMA has simply said that the government needs to fix it and there is nothing they can do about it.

Likely sold at auction and likely has been rebuilt...
I'm not sure how the rest of the story lines up, though...
Maybe the new owner applied for Rebuilt status based on the VIN and a clerical error sent it to previous owner?

Report it stolen, claim insurance again. Use that money to buy a Honda Fit, win at life.

Also, auto-renew shouldn't work if the car went from active to rebuilt.

I'm that super popular guy's alt from awhile ago. I started taking medication and did a restart test to see if I could be even more popular than my previous alt - Toma.

If you were toma you would crest new threads instead of replying to them. Also you haven’t mentioned Stephen Harper once today.

If I could've convinced my wife that a hatchback is both race car and SUV, it would've been done long ago. She hates them. I love them. Out of the five cars that I have owned, one was a hatch (loved it, still miss it 8 years later, almost bought it back last year) and two are wagons (just a longer hatch).

To provide some "car issue" context, my wife phoned me last week asking where the hood latch was. I then replaced a sensor the day after she asked and found the prop rod clip broken (how does that even happen). She was unaware she broke it and I'm in the engine bay usually twice a week so I know exactly when it happened. But this thread is not a bitch about my wife thread.
